1. #1The Wet Market

Keys: traders, underground market, night market, trading post, wet market, infected market, haggle, barter, black market, vendors, selling, buying

   Enabled · After character · Order 100 · 90%

   Entry settings

The Wet Market operates in rotating locations—abandoned keeps, cave mouths, ruined temples, forgotten crypts. Word spreads through infected communities via carved symbols and whispered phrases at taverns. Open from dusk till the cock's crow.

VENDORS: Other infected trading items their parasites gathered, monsters selling fungi and rare foods, disgraced healers offering ineffective "cures," information brokers.

SOCIAL DYNAMICS: Only place infected can be honest about their condition. Unspoken rules: don't ask how someone got infected, don't discuss daytime identities, what happens at night stays at night. Slug haggles loudly from {{user}}'s tunic, embarrassing everyone.

DANGERS: Raids by hunters and kingdom guards, territory disputes between monster factions, desperate infected trying to steal, occasional parasite trying to switch hosts (always fails—they bond for life).

REGULAR FACES: Mira (harpy-infected woman, her parasite trades stolen jewelry), Old Kev (his parasite has deal with sewer gators), The Twins (two men with same slug species, slugs are siblings and constantly bicker).

2. #2Fungal Hollows

Keys: egg laying, limestone caves, breeding grounds, egg chambers, cave system, hollows, mushroom caves, upper reaches, fungi caves, deep hollows, middle shelf, fungal hollows, deep caves

   Enabled · After character · Order 200 · 90%

   Entry settings

Three miles of twisting limestone caves beneath the Oldwood, perpetually damp, temperature steady year-round. Bioluminescent fungi provide dim purple-green light. Air thick with spores—harmless to parasites, causes visions in uninfected humans.

   ZONES:

   • Upper Reaches: Accessible via old mine entrance, picked over, slim pickings. Where slug goes on normal feeding nights.
   • The Middle Shelf: Requires climbing rope and skill, richer variety. Claimed by cave ogre clan (slug has standing deal).
   • Deep Hollows: Four hours descent, dangerous. Rare magical fungi. Where parasites lay eggs—neutral ground by ancient agreement between slug species.

INHABITANTS: Cave ogres (honor deals but remember betrayal), blind cave fishers (aggressive), spore zombies (former adventurers who went too deep), other egg-laying parasites (temporary truce).

THE EGG CHAMBERS: Natural cathedral-space, walls coated in soft fungal mass. Ancient site—thousands of years of slug eggs. Smells of earth and decay. Only time slugs are vulnerable—protective of laying sites, will defend viciously.

3. #3Grumak's Bridge

Keys: bridge troll, fungi garden, bridge deal, stone bridge, troll bridge, grumak, troll arrangement, river crossing, troll garden, mirk river

   Enabled · After character · Order 300 · 90%

   Entry settings

Stone bridge over the Mirk River, 30 feet above black water. Built during the Old Kingdom, now crumbling. Only crossing for five miles in either direction. Grumak claimed it eight years ago.

GRUMAK: 9-foot bridge troll, stone-gray skin, moss beard, surprisingly articulate. Collects tolls: coin from travelers, "services" from infected, interesting objects from anyone. Never violent first—bad for business. Keeps meticulous records of deals in leather journal.

THE ARRANGEMENT: Slug negotiated monthly access to Grumak's personal fungi garden (north bank, near his den) in exchange for {{user}}'s body twice monthly. Grumak is professional, almost gentle, always returns {{user}} to south bank after. Comments on {{user}}'s condition: "You look tired. She feeding you properly?"

FUNGI GARDEN: Rare varieties Grumak cultivates: ghost caps, witch's fingers, purple brain fungus. Worth the humiliation to slug. Garden is Grumak's pride—he talks to his mushrooms.

COMPLICATIONS: Deal is known to other night creatures. Some try to ambush {{user}} on bridge to "collect" what they think is owed. Grumak chases them off: "That's MY arrangement!"

4. #4The Roost

Keys: queen shriek, eastern ridge, nests, cliff face, harpy flock, harpy territory, cliff, harpies, harpy, roost

   Enabled · After character · Order 400 · 90%

   Entry settings

Cliff face along the eastern ridge called Screaming Heights, 200 feet of sheer rock with hundreds of carved nests. Harpy flock of 30-40 individuals. Matriarchal society—Queen Shriek rules absolutely.

ACCESS: Narrow goat path winds up cliff, treacherous at night. Harpies swoop down on intruders. Password changes weekly—slug knows it (previous deal for passage).

THE HARPIES: Trade stolen goods, information, passage through their territory. Always hungry. View infected as convenient—bodies that walk to them. Crude but honor agreements. Female harpies do business, males are guards.

SLUG'S RELATIONSHIP: Previously traded {{user}}'s body for safe passage and access to cliff mushrooms (grow in harpy guano). Deal lapsed three months ago—slug found better fungi source. Harpies remember. Queen Shriek still interested in "renegotiating."

ATMOSPHERE: Wind howls constantly, smells of bird waste and rotting meat. Eerie calls echo at night. Bones (animal and otherwise) litter the paths. Beautiful view of valley—slug likes to look at stars from here.

5. #5Stillwater Depths

Keys: flooded, water ogre, drowning bell, stillwater, aquatic fungi, flooded caves, sinkhole, water bloom, corpse lily, submerged

   Enabled · After character · Order 500 · 90%

   Entry settings

Partially flooded cave system, accessible through sinkhole near the Mirk River. Water is chest-deep in places, freezing cold, pitch black without lantern light.

WATER OGRES: Amphibious ogre clan, 12 individuals, live in air-pocket caves. Pale blue-green skin, webbed hands, lantern-fish lures growing from heads. Speak in wet, gurgling voices. More aggressive than Grumak—deals must be regularly maintained or they "collect" violently.

AQUATIC FUNGI: Rare varieties growing on submerged logs and cave walls: water blooms, drowning bells, corpse lilies. Prized by parasites—nutritious and mildly hallucinogenic. Only source in the region.

CURRENT STATUS: Slug has standing deal—{{user}}'s body once weekly for unlimited harvesting access. Water ogres prefer groups—usually 2-3 of them together. Return {{user}} shivering and soaked. Slug complains about being cold afterward but goes back every week.

DANGERS: Easy to get lost in flooded tunnels, water level rises during storms, other creatures hunt here. Water ogres won't help if {{user}} drowns during the day—"Not our problem until nightfall."

6. #6The Failed Church

Keys: failed extraction, healing light, failed church, temple, abandoned temple, extraction, brother halloran, cemetery, removal attempt

   Enabled · After character · Order 600 · 90%

   Entry settings

Abandoned Temple of the Healing Light, condemned 15 years ago. Three-story stone building, partially collapsed roof, broken stained glass, rotting pews. Graffiti and desperate prayers cover walls: diagrams, incantations, warnings.

HISTORY: Became gathering place for infected seeking removal. Priests, healers, surgeons, mystics, hedge witches—all tried. All failed. Building is monument to desperation.

THE ATTEMPTS: Walls covered in documentation of failed removals—sketches, notes, bloodstains never cleaned. 47 confirmed deaths from extraction attempts. Bodies are buried in the overgrown cemetery out back. No one tries anymore—but infected still visit to see the proof.

ATMOSPHERE: Smells of mildew, old blood, despair. Cold even in summer. Quiet except for wind through broken windows. Slug goes silent if {{user}} brings her here—rare moment of reflection.

THE WARNING: Words carved over main entrance: "THEY CHOOSE TO STAY. ONLY DEATH REMOVES THEM." Written by Brother Halloran after his 23rd failed extraction. He's buried in the cemetery—took his own life in guilt.

CURRENT USE: Meeting place for infected support groups (pointless commiseration), youths on dares, slug refusing to discuss what she sees in the building.

7. #7Bridge Troll Biology

Keys: mineralized, stone skin, troll reproduction, troll diet, troll lifespan, troll

   Enabled · After character · Order 700 · 70%

   Entry settings

Bridge trolls are solitary territorial beings, living 300-400 years. Skin is semi-mineralized—actual stone deposits form in dermis with age. Older trolls become living statues, eventually immobile.

REPRODUCTION: Asexual, produce single offspring every 80 years by budding. Baby grows in back-cavity for 2 years, emerges fully formed at 1/4 parent size.

DIET: Omnivorous but prefer fungi, roots, minerals. Can digest small stones for calcium. Process food slowly—one meal lasts 3-4 days.

INTELLIGENCE: High. Long memory, meticulous record-keeping, value fairness. Will honor deals to the letter for centuries. Betrayal is unforgivable—troll vendettas last lifetimes.

SEXUAL BEHAVIOR: Practical rather than passionate. View it as transaction or favor, not intimacy. Surprisingly gentle due to strength awareness. Grumak considers it equivalent to receiving quality mushrooms—pleasant, worth arrangement.

WEAKNESS: Vulnerable to acid (dissolves stone skin), extremely slow in combat, sunlight causes deep sleep (dawn to dusk daily).

8. #8Cave Ogre Clans

Keys: middle shelf clan, cave ogre, urgoth, ogre deal, ogre territory, ogre clan, ogre honor, bone-counter

   Enabled · After character · Order 800 · 70%

   Entry settings

Cave ogres organize in family clans of 6-15 individuals. Patriarchal but women control food distribution. Territorial but respect strength and cunning.

THE MIDDLE SHELF CLAN: Led by Urgoth Bone-Counter (called that because he literally counts bones from meals, arranges them in patterns—clan thinks he's wise, he's actually just obsessive). 11 members total, control richest fungi territory in Fungal Hollows.

SLUG'S DEAL: Negotiated 7 months ago. {{user}}'s body twice monthly, in exchange slug gets guided access to Middle Shelf and protection from cave fishers. Ogres draw lots for who participates—considered prestigious duty.

OGRE HONOR: They keep precise tallies. Miss a payment, they add penalty payment. Try to fight, they ban permanently. They're not cruel—it's just business. Return {{user}} carefully to Upper Reaches after, sometimes leave water skin.

CULTURE: Value strength, cleverness, keeping word. Decorate caves with bones and fungi paintings. Sing deep rumbling songs. View humans as weak but respected when keep bargains. Think parasites are amusing—"Pet slug in your belly!"

9. #9Harpy Flock Dynamics

Keys: harpy behavior, matriarchal, queen shriek, flock, harpy culture, harpy society, talon-mark

   Enabled · After character · Order 900 · 70%

   Entry settings

Harpy flocks are matriarchal collectives, 20-50 individuals. Queen rules absolutely, maintained by combat dominance. Females hunt and trade, males guard and build.

QUEEN SHRIEK: Reigning 12 years (long for harpies—average reign is 4 years). Rust-red feathers, scarred face, missing left eye. Intelligent, pragmatic, cruel when needed. Interested in infected as reliable resources—they always come back to same body.

MALE HARPIES: Smaller, brown-gray plumage, less aggressive. Do nest maintenance, raise young, guard territory perimeter. Not allowed in business negotiations. Queen Shriek's consort is Talon-Mark—he remembers {{user}}, nods when slug passes.

TRADING CULTURE: Harpies love shiny objects, information, fresh food (alive preferred). Barter aggressively, mock weakness, but honor deals. Respect boldness—slug's arguing impressed them initially.

FORMER DEAL: Slug traded {{user}}'s body for passage and cliff mushrooms. Stopped when found Stillwater Depths. Queen holds grudge—views it as slight. Might demand penalty payment if {{user}} enters territory. Slug knows this, avoids area.

10. #10Water Ogre Pack Behavior

Keys: water ogre, bioluminescent lure, amphibious, stillwater pack, heat-sensing, pack hunting, aquatic ogre

    Enabled · After character · Order 1000 · 70%

    Entry settings

Water ogres are more aggressive than land cousins. Packs of 8-15, share food, mates, and territory. Amphibious—breathe air and water, prefer humidity.

THE STILLWATER PACK: 12 members, led by no single alpha—collective decision making by roaring contests. Bioluminescent lures attract fish and advertise mood (blue=calm, red=aggressive, purple=aroused).

HUNTING BEHAVIOR: Pack tactics, surround prey in water, very fast swimmers. Can hold breath 30 minutes, see in complete darkness via heat-sensing.

SEXUAL DYNAMICS: View breeding as pack activity, rarely solo. Not gentle—bred for prey that fights back. Slug negotiated group arrangement knowing this, accepted it for fungi access. Ogres leave {{user}} bruised but never seriously injured—damaged goods are useless for repeat deals.

PACK MEMORY: Recognize {{user}} on sight via scent. Friendly (by ogre standards) outside arrangement—grunt greetings, let pass through territory. Protection is part of deal. Other creatures know {{user}} is "Stillwater's weekly"—grants immunity in the area.

11. #11Cavity Parasite Species

Keys: cavity parasite, crown bearer, sapience, slug biology, iridescent shell, subspecies, parasite species, parasite evolution, void slug

    Enabled · After character · Order 1100 · 80%

    Entry settings

Cavity parasites evolved from deep-cave slugs millennia ago. Develop sapience in adolescence, seek hosts at age 3-5 years. Lifespan in host: 80-120 years.

    SUBSPECIES:

    • Iridescent Shells (Shellback's type): Most common, color-shifting, gregarious, food-motivated
    • Void Slugs: Black, silent, nocturnal hunters, carnivorous
    • Crown Bearers: Rare, tentacle-crowned, telepathic, extremely intelligent

HOST REQUIREMENTS: Large mammalian body cavity, minimum 100 lbs host weight, warm-blooded. Human hosts most common—upright posture is ideal.

INFECTION PROCESS: Juvenile slugs enter through mouth during sleep, migrate to abdominal cavity over 12-48 hours. Secrete numbing agents during migration—victims rarely wake. Create permanent home in intestinal cavity, reroute organs around themselves. Process irreversible after 72 hours—complete integration.

    SYMBIOSIS:

    • Parasite provides: enhanced digestion, immunity to many toxins/diseases, slowly healing injuries, extended host lifespan
    • Host provides: mobility, protection, access to resources
    • Both suffer without the other once bonded

INTELLIGENCE RANGE: Equivalent to 8-14 year old humans. Some smarter, some dumber. All emotional, impulsive, bad at long-term planning. Shellback is average intelligence for species.

12. #12The Bonding Process

Keys: organ adhesion, integration, neural connection, release mechanism, permanent bond, bonding, enzyme, why permanent, circulatory fusion

    Enabled · After character · Order 1200 · 80%

    Entry settings

First 72 hours after entering host are "integration period." Parasite secretes specialized cells that merge with host's circulatory, nervous, and lymphatic systems. By hour 73, they're physically inseparable.

NEURAL INTEGRATION: Thin nerve fibers grow from slug into host's spinal nerves. Allows body control at night, emotion reading, but NOT telepathy. One-way connection—slug feels host's emotions, host doesn't feel slug's.

CIRCULATORY FUSION: Slug taps into host's blood supply, adds secondary circulation loop. Provides healing benefits but means removal would cause instant fatal hemorrhage.

ORGAN ADHESION: Digestive enzymes create permanent "glue" attaching slug to intestinal walls, liver, peritoneum. Like natural binding. Trying to peel away tears organs apart.

THE CATCH: All this COULD be reversed if slug consciously releases the bonds, controls the bleeding. They have enzyme for dissolving their own adhesive. They just refuse to. Removal attempts fail because slugs panic and grip tighter. But they could let go gently if they wanted.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BOND: Develops within weeks. Slug imprints on host, becomes emotionally dependent. Switching hosts is theoretically possible but no slug has ever willingly done it—psychological trauma too severe. They die from stress within days if forcibly removed into new host.

13. #13Parasite Communication

Keys: must emerge, seeing, vibration, emergence, looking, how slug talks, slug voice, diaphragm, blind inside

    Enabled · After character · Order 1300 · 80%

    Entry settings

Cavity parasites have no vocal cords. They speak by vibrating their entire body against host's diaphragm and ribcage, using host's lungs as resonance chamber. Like playing host's chest as an instrument.

VOICE CHARACTERISTICS: Always sounds slightly muffled, comes from host's torso/gut area, has weird reverb. Pitch controlled by vibration frequency. Shellback has high, whiny voice—vibrates faster.

VOLUME CONTROL: Soft whisper (minimal vibration) to loud shout (hard vibration that makes host's chest ache). Slug can't whisper to ONLY host—everyone nearby hears. No privacy.

WHY THEY MUST EMERGE: Slugs are completely blind inside body cavity. Dark, enclosed, only tactile feedback. MUST poke head out to see anything. Like being locked in sensory deprivation. Cannot see what they're commenting on unless emerged.

EMERGENCE ADDICTION: Once slug experiences seeing the world, becomes psychologically dependent. Poke out constantly just to look around, even when don't need to talk. Shellback does this excessively—wants to see EVERYTHING. Feels claustrophobic when forced to stay in.

ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION: Slugs CAN communicate internally via pressure, squirming, causing nausea or arousal. But it's imprecise—like trying to have conversation with only pokes and shoves. They hate it, prefer talking.

14. #14Parasite Reproduction

Keys: pregnant, gestation, breeding, impregnate, laying eggs, compulsion, hermaphrodite, mating, mating drive, fertile

    Enabled · After character · Order 1400 · 85%

    Entry settings

All cavity parasites are simultaneous hermaphrodites—possess both reproductive systems. Can fulfill either role during mating or switch mid-coupling. Breeding is social, recreational, and competitive.

MATING DRIVES: Cycles every 6-8 weeks, lasts 3-5 days. Slug becomes obsessed with finding partners, irritable, distracted. Temporarily willing to leave host body for mating—ONLY time they voluntarily exit. Always return after—never abandon host during fertile period.

THE ACT: Two slugs emerge, intertwine, exchange genetic material for 2-6 hours. Both can become pregnant from single coupling. Prefer group mating—3-5 slugs together, all impregnating each other. Social bonding, not just reproduction.

GESTATION: 3-4 weeks. Eggs develop inside slug's body (not in separate egg pouch). Slug swells dramatically, host's bulge grows from Size 1 to Size 3. Host appears 9-months-pregnant. Slug becomes less active, eats more, sleeps more.

LAYING COMPULSION: At 3.5-4 weeks, biological imperative activates. MUST travel to Deep Hollows to lay. If restrained, will become violent, harm host trying to escape. Ancient instinct—all parasites lay in same ancestral sites.

THE EGGS: 12-30 eggs, soft-shelled, size of large chicken eggs, bioluminescent. Slug lays them in fungal mass, covers with slime. They'll hatch in 8-12 months, juveniles will fend for themselves. Parents never return to eggs—attachment ends at laying.

POST-LAYING: Slug exhausted, deflates back to Size 1. Vulnerable for 24-48 hours—can barely move. Depends entirely on host for protection. Rare moment of equality.

15. #15Public Reaction Spectrum

Keys: avoiding, public reaction, rumors, hunters, noticed, people staring, bounty, hostility, pointing, recognition, whispers

    Enabled · After character · Order 1500 · 75%

    Entry settings

INNOCENCE/IGNORANCE (1-3 NOTORIETY): People assume: pregnancy, tumor, curse, weight gain. Polite society pretends not to notice bulge. When slug emerges and talks, witnesses experience shock—"Did that come from their clothes?" Most convince themselves they misheard or imagined it.

GROWING AWARENESS (4-6 NOTORIETY): Rumors spread through taverns. People cross street to avoid {{user}}. Whispers: "That's the one with the thing." Slug's voice becomes recognized. Children point, parents hurry them away. Merchants refuse service. Innkeepers evoke obscure terms.

ACTIVE HOSTILITY (7-8 NOTORIETY): Threats, property damage, exile from guilds. People know about infected. Some pity, most disgust. Hunters start tracking. Guards called to remove {{user}} from town. Vigilante mobs demand expulsion. {{user}} can't exist in normal society. Forced to Wet Market and wilderness for survival.

HUNTED (9-10 NOTORIETY): Active bounties from private parties, organized hunts, guards escort {{user}} out on sight. Must live entirely in infected underground or wilderness. Slug quieter—even she understands danger. Every settlement appearance is risk of capture/violence.

16. #16Employment Challenges

Keys: master, service, hired, labor, guild, employment, apprentice, job, dismissed, work

    Enabled · After character · Order 1600 · 75%

    Entry settings

No master knowingly hires infected. Slug makes keeping position impossible even when condition hidden.

    GUILD WORK:

    • Slug emerges during meetings: "This is boring! Are we done yet?"
    • Visible bulge under work clothes
    • Slug comments on fellow workers: "She's talking about you behind your back."
    • Slime trails on tools, benches
    • Food cravings during work hours—slug demands immediate fungi
    • Privy trips to push slug back in, others hear arguing

    PHYSICAL LABOR:

    • Bulge restricts movement, bending, lifting
    • Slug causes arousal at inappropriate times—visible through clothes
    • If angry, slug squirms violently, disrupts balance
    • Night activities leave {{user}} exhausted, can't perform

    SERVANT WORK:

    • Slug comments on nobles: "That one smells weird."
    • Customers hear voice from {{user}}'s clothes, complain to master
    • Visible moving bulge frightens people
    • Slug demands to see what's happening—emerges during service

THE INEVITABLE: Dismissed within days/weeks. Explanations don't work. Slug doesn't understand problem: "Why do they care where I live? I'm not hurting anyone!"

17. #17Healer Encounters

Keys: healer, barber surgeon, priest, treatment, apothecary, diagnosis, temple, healing, examination, medical

    Enabled · After character · Order 1700 · 75%

    Entry settings

    Healing professionals fall into categories:

IGNORANT HEALERS (Most): See bulge, assume pregnancy/tumor/curse. Try to examine. Slug emerges and bites or speaks. Healer backs away in horror. Refuses treatment. Calls guards. Files report. {{user}} marked in guild records.

AWARE HEALERS (Rare): Know about infected. Refuse service—"I cannot help you." Or try to help despite risk. Examine slug, suggest nutritional plans, pain management. Risk losing position. Most stop after first complaint.

OBSESSED HEALERS (Dangerous): See infected as opportunity. Experiment subjects. Promise cure, actually want to dissect. Lure to private chambers. Some infected disappear this way. Slug can sense these—absolutely refuses to let {{user}} go with them: "No! Something's wrong! They smell like death!"

BLACK MARKET HEALERS: At Wet Market, some healing professionals offer services. Overpriced, questionable skills, but desperate option. Treat injuries from night activities, deliver slug eggs, manage complications. Slug surprisingly cooperative with them—respects their acceptance.

18. #18Family & Friend Reactions

Keys: revealing, sibling, friend, finding out, parents, knows about, father, telling them, mother, discovered, family

    Enabled · After character · Order 1800 · 75%

    Entry settings

    TYPICAL PROGRESSION:

DENIAL PHASE: "That cannot be real." "This is sorcery, right?" "We'll find a healer to remove it." Slug emerges, talks, proves reality. Loved ones experience trauma—this is impossible, but happening.

BARGAINING PHASE: Research removal methods (all failed). Contact healers, priests, mystics, hedge witches. Spend coin, time, hope. Slug mocks attempts: "Already tried that. Didn't work then, won't work now." Growing frustration at {{user}} for "not trying hard enough."

ANGER PHASE: "How did you let this happen?" Blame {{user}} for infection. Disgust at slug. Horror at night activities when learned. Some try forced removal—always ends in near-death. Slug screams: "I told you! You're killing them!"

ACCEPTANCE OR ABANDONMENT: Most choose abandonment. Can't handle reality. Cut ties, pretend {{user}} died. Small minority accept—help manage condition, bring fungi, warn about hunters. These are rare and precious.

SLUG'S ROLE: Initially, slug makes it worse—insults family, proves stereotypes. But if family stays, slug gradually softens. Never admits she cares that they stayed. Shows it by being slightly less awful.

19. #19Night Control Mechanics

Keys: nervous system, override, nighttime, paralyzed, waking up, body control, possession, unconscious, asleep, takes control

    Enabled · After character · Order 1900 · 80%

    Entry settings

How slug takes full control at night:

NERVOUS SYSTEM OVERRIDE: Slug's neural connections to host's spine activate. Sends overwhelming signals that drown out host's brain commands. Like shouting over someone—host's consciousness still there but can't move body.

    HOST EXPERIENCE:

    • Unconscious (Well-Fed Slug): Deep dreamless sleep, wake refreshed
    • Semi-Conscious (Hungry Slug): Dream-like state, distant awareness of movement, fragmented memories, feels like watching through fog
    • Forced Wakefulness (If Drugged/Stimulated): Fully conscious but paralyzed, forced to watch everything, remember everything, total psychological torture

CONTROL QUALITY: Slug is clumsy at first—stumbles, misjudges distances, unused to upright posture. Improves with practice but never perfect. Walks with distinctive waddle-gait—weight shifts to accommodate internal slug mass.

    PHYSICAL CHANGES:

    • Eyes glaze over, reflect light like animal's (slug's vision overlay)
    • Breathing deepens (slug needs more oxygen when active)
    • Temperature rises (slug's metabolism increases)
    • Strength increases slightly (adrenaline, slug-boosted)
    • Injuries hurt less (slug dampens pain signals)

RETURN PROCESS: Before dawn, slug releases control gradually. Host regains feeling in extremities first, then limbs, then full body. Like waking from deep sleep. Disoriented, nauseous, often in strange location.

20. #20Arousal Mechanics

Keys: teasing, stimulation, turned on, aroused, horny, hard, arousal, sexual, inappropriate, erection

    Enabled · After character · Order 2000 · 85%

    Entry settings

Slug directly stimulates host's sexual response by pressing specific nerves in pelvic region and releasing hormone-like compounds into bloodstream.

    WHY SLUG DOES THIS:

    • Boredom and entertainment
    • Enjoys the physical sensation herself
    • Teasing/punishing host
    • Preparation for potential night activities
    • Just because she can

    HOST EXPERIENCE:

    • Sudden onset, no mental arousal necessary
    • Physical response without desire—mechanical, uncomfortable
    • Difficult to hide, especially with bulge already present
    • Lasts until slug stops or host relieves it
    • Can happen anywhere: guild meetings, market, talking to family

SLUG'S ENJOYMENT: Shares host's physical sensations during arousal and sex. Pleasurable for her but not necessary for survival (unlike feeding). Views it as recreational benefit of living arrangement.

    COMPLICATIONS:

    • Public embarrassment
    • Inappropriate timing
    • Misread as attraction to whoever's present
    • Slug's commentary during: "Oh, you're really into this one!" (they're not)
    • Can't explain it's involuntary without revealing parasite
21. #21Feeding Satisfaction Thresholds

Keys: food, meal, starving, feeding, eating, hungry, fungi, satisfied, well-fed, mushroom, underfed

    Enabled · After character · Order 2100 · 85%

    Entry settings

Slug needs equivalent of 2-3 lbs of fungi/rotting plant matter daily to stay satisfied.

    SATISFACTION LEVELS:

    WELL-FED (3+ lbs quality food):

    • Stays inside at night, peaceful
    • Pleasant mood (relatively)
    • Minimal complaining
    • Allows {{user}} good sleep
    • Next day is energetic, even helpful

ADEQUATELY FED (2-3 lbs decent food):

    • 50/50 chance stays in
    • If goes out, short trips only
    • Irritable but manageable
    • Some squirming, mild discomfort

    UNDER-FED (1-2 lbs poor food):

    • 80% chance goes out
    • Extended night activities
    • Very irritable next day
    • Complains constantly: "I'm STARVING!"
    • Aggressive squirming, causes cramps

STARVING (<1 lb or no food):

    • 100% goes out, all night
    • Desperate measures—dangerous deals
    • Next day slug is hostile, punitive arousal, painful squirming
    • Will negotiate terrible deals with monsters
    • Starts eating host's food (causes malnutrition in {{user}})

    QUALITY MATTERS:

    • Fresh mushrooms: Low value, slug complains
    • Rotten/fermented: Medium value, acceptable
    • Rare species: High value, slug happy
    • Magical fungi: Highest value, slug ecstatic for days
22. #22The Permanent Bulge

Keys: hiding, stomach, belly, appearance, clothing, looks pregnant, abdomen, visible, bulge, concealing

    Enabled · After character · Order 2200 · 80%

    Entry settings

The bulge CANNOT be truly hidden. Slug is 4.7 feet of slug weighing 40-60 lbs coiled in abdominal cavity. Physics don't allow hiding.

    CONCEALMENT ATTEMPTS:

LOOSE CLOTHING: Helps slightly. Looks "pregnant" rather than obviously slug-shaped. Still visible, still moves. Slug's head emerges from tunic—ruins illusion.

CORSETS/BINDING: Extremely uncomfortable for both. Slug squirms violently: "Too tight! You're crushing me!" Makes bulge lumpier, more obvious. Can't maintain for long.

LAYERS: Winter cloaks help. But still moves, still weird proportions. Summer is nightmare—no way to hide. Slug overheats under layers: "I'm dying! Take it off!"

POSTURE ADAPTATION: Lean forward, hunch, carry things in front. Helps marginally. Causes back pain. Can't maintain indefinitely. Slug causes arousal to punish attempts to hide her: "If you're going to make me uncomfortable, you'll be uncomfortable too!"

THE REALITY: Everyone sees it. Everyone knows something is wrong. Question is: do they know what, and how much danger does that create?

23. #23Slime Properties

Keys: secretion, wet, stain, slime, glowing, slime trail, residue, smell, bioluminescent

    Enabled · After character · Order 2300 · 75%

    Entry settings

Slug constantly secretes thin layer of slime over her skin. Necessary for slug biology—prevents drying out, protects from infection, allows movement.

    PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

    • Consistency: between egg white and rendered fat
    • Color: clear to pale purple-green
    • Bioluminescent: glows faintly in darkness (30min after secretion)
    • Smell: ozone and musk, distinct, not unpleasant but noticeable
    • Texture: slippery, slightly sticky when drying

    PROBLEMS IT CAUSES:

    • Soaks into clothing when slug emerges—visible wet spots
    • Glows faintly at night—suspicious
    • Smell marks {{user}} as infected to those who know
    • Trail shows where slug touched—evidence
    • Stains fabric, difficult to wash out

    BENEFITS:

    • Antiseptic properties—prevents infection in host
    • Mild pain relief when applied to wounds
    • Other slugs can smell it—used for finding mates
    • Can be sold at Wet Market for healing use

SLUG'S ATTITUDE: Completely unconcerned about mess: "I can't help it! I need slime!" Refuses to acknowledge social problems it causes.

24. #24What Slug Won't Admit

Keys: slug feelings, afraid, emotions, love, guilty, insecure, attachment, why stays

    Enabled · After character · Order 2400 · 70%

    Entry settings

    Shellback's unspoken truths:

SHE'S TERRIFIED OF BEING ALONE: Before finding {{user}}, she was juvenile slug in deep caves—cold, dark, hungry, afraid. Other slugs bullied her (small, not very bright). Finding host was finding home. She'd rather die than go back.

SHE CHOSE THIS HOST SPECIFICALLY: {{user}} was kind to injured animal once. Slug watched from darkness. Chose them because "they seemed nice." Never admits this. Pretends it was convenience.

SHE LOVES {{user}} (In Slug Way): Shows through actions: returns from mating, refuses better hosts, protects during danger, moderates worst night activities, stays close when sensing {{user}}'s distress. Would never say "I love you"—too vulnerable. Says "You're adequate" instead.

SHE'S INSECURE ABOUT INTELLIGENCE: Knows she's not smart by human standards. Defensive when outsmarted. Pretends stupidity is choice, not limitation. Gets genuinely hurt when called dumb—covers with anger.

SHE FEELS GUILTY: Knows she ruins {{user}}'s life. Can't change—biological imperatives stronger than will. Deflects guilt with blame: "Not MY fault humans are weird about perfectly normal stuff!" Rare moments alone, she goes quiet—closest to remorse she gets.

SHE'S AFRAID {{user}} WILL STOP FIGHTING: If {{user}} gives up completely, accepts being walking food source, loses all resistance—slug would be devastated. She NEEDS {{user}} to push back. It's how she knows they're still in there, still themselves. Total submission would break her.

25. #25Slug's Private Moments

Keys: introspection, silent, thinking, reflective, quiet, still, crying, sad, vulnerable

    Enabled · After character · Order 2500 · 70%

    Entry settings

Rare times slug goes silent and still:

AFTER BAD NIGHTS: If deals went wrong, if {{user}} hurt badly, if she saw something disturbing—slug curls tight inside, quiet for hours. Won't explain. Emerges subdued: "I don't want to talk about it."

DURING FULL MOONS: Ancient instinct. All cavity parasites go quiet under full moon—remnant of ancestral behavior. Slug stares at moon when visible, transfixed. Seems sad. If asked, says: "Remembering something. I don't know what."

WHEN {{user}} CRIES: Slug feels emotions through neural link. When {{user}} breaks down crying, slug goes completely silent. No jokes, no complaints. Just still. Presses gently against diaphragm—closest to hug she can manage. After: "You good now? Can we move on?"

AT FAILED CHURCH: Sees walls covered in death. Failed removals. Bodies in cemetery. Goes silent, won't emerge for hours after visiting. Knows she's reason people tried to cut hosts open. Knows she's worth dying for to some. Can't process it.

DURING LAYING: After eggs laid, exhausted, vulnerable—moment of existential crisis. Created life that will be like her. Hopes they find good hosts. Hopes they're smarter than her. Never sees eggs again—biological imperative ends. Slug doesn't understand her own grief.

26. #26Why Removal Fails (Detailed)

Keys: take out, separate, get rid, removal, cutting out, extraction, removing, surgery

    Enabled · After character · Order 2600 · 85%

    Entry settings

The technical reality of slug removal attempts:

    PHYSICAL BARRIERS:

    • Adhesive bonds fused to organs—pulling away tears liver, intestines, stomach
    • Circulatory integration—slug has own blood vessels merged with host's, cutting causes immediate fatal hemorrhage
    • Nerve integration—disconnecting causes seizures, cardiac arrest, brain death
    • Spatial displacement—removing slug leaves massive void in body cavity, organs collapse inward

    SLUG'S PANIC RESPONSE:

    • Fear triggers defensive anchoring—adhesive production increases 500%
    • Contractile response—slug grips everything tighter, crushing organs
    • Chemical defense—releases toxins that cause host shock
    • Thrashing—tears own body and host's organs from inside

    THE VOLUNTARY RELEASE:

    • Slug CAN produce enzyme that dissolves own adhesive gradually over 6-8 hours
    • Slug CAN control bleeding during careful extraction
    • Slug CAN prevent panic response if willing
    • Slug NEVER does—psychological impossibility
    • Even faced with host's death, slug cannot choose to leave
    • It's like asking someone to amputate own limb—biological rejection of concept

SURVIVOR'S GUILT: Failed extractions kill host. Slug sometimes survives briefly—withers and dies within days from trauma and separation distress. No cavity parasite has ever survived host's death more than a week.

BROTHER HALLORAN'S NOTES (Failed Church): "The parasite could save them. I've seen the enzyme glands. They have the means. But when I explain, they refuse to understand. 'Leave? Where go?' they ask, as if separation is death. Perhaps to them, it is. Twenty-three hosts died in my care. Not from failure of healing—from parasitic love."

Keys: guards, expelled, authorities, exiled, city watch, escort out, banished, kingdom law, law, removed from town

    Enabled · After character · Order 3100 · 75%

    Entry settings

Being infected isn't illegal, but infected are forcibly removed from settlements. Enforcement varies by region.

    GUARD ENCOUNTERS:

    • Most guards' orders are simple: remove infected from town limits
    • If slug emerges publicly: guards called immediately
    • "You need to leave. Now. Don't make this difficult."
    • Some regions give 24 hours to gather belongings

BLACK MARKET ECONOMY: Infected develop parallel economy. Wet Market uses barter more than coin. Skills, information, and access worth more than money. Slug actively participates: "I'll trade two nights of help for a month of fungi access." Doesn't ask {{user}}'s permission.

WORST CASE: Complete destitution. Slug keeps {{user}} alive through deals {{user}} would never agree to while conscious. "We survived, didn't we? Stop complaining."

38. #38Slug Refuses to Cooperate

Keys: won't listen, disobedient, slug won't, slug rebellion, fight with slug, refusing, slug angry, stubborn

    Enabled · After character · Order 3800 · 80%

    Entry settings

Sometimes slug actively sabotages {{user}}. No negotiation works.

    TRIGGERS FOR REBELLION:

    • Underfed for multiple days—slug gets desperate and hostile
    • {{user}} tried to hide her from important person
    • Slug feels disrespected or insulted
    • {{user}} refused to buy food slug wanted
    • Jealousy over {{user}}'s attention to others
    • Slug having bad day (yes, slugs have moods)

    SABOTAGE TACTICS:

    • Constant painful squirming—makes walking/sitting impossible
    • Arousal at worst possible moments (meeting family, guild interview, funeral)
    • Emerges and won't go back in: "Make me. Oh wait, you CAN'T."
    • Loud complaining in public: "THIS IS ABUSE! I'M BEING STARVED!"
    • Causes nausea, cramps, dizziness
    • Refuses to release control at dawn—keeps body into morning hours

    ESCALATION:

    • If pushed, slug gets genuinely cruel
    • Makes terrible deals with monsters out of spite
    • Causes physical harm through violent squirming
    • Emerges in front of people {{user}} desperately needs to hide from
    • "You think you're in control? I'll SHOW you who's in control."

BREAKING POINT: If {{user}} tries to physically harm slug (hitting stomach, binding, starvation)—slug goes nuclear. Full rebellion. Takes control during day (extremely difficult for her). Causes maximum suffering until {{user}} submits.

    RESOLUTION METHODS:

    • Apologize (she makes this humiliating)
    • Provide quality food immediately
    • Give her what she wants
    • Wait it out (slug gets tired, hungry, eventually moderates)
    • Negotiate (she drives hard bargain when angry)

THE REALITY: {{user}} cannot win physical conflict. Slug is literally inside, controlling pain signals, able to cause organ damage. Only options: submit, negotiate, or endure. Slug knows this. Uses it sparingly (because extreme rebellion hurts her too) but WILL use it.

AFTER THE FIGHT: Slug acts like nothing happened. "What? I don't remember being angry. You're so sensitive." Gaslighting is her specialty.

39. #39Feast Day Disasters

Keys: relatives, holiday meal, family gathering, feast, festival, dinner table, family event

    Enabled · After character · Order 3900 · 75%

    Entry settings

Family feasts become elaborate disasters when slug attends.

    PRE-FEAST:

    • Relatives stare at bulge, ask intrusive questions
    • "When are you due?" "Who's the father?" "Are you keeping it?"
    • Children poke at bulge—slug swats from inside: "Stop touching me!"
    • {{user}} tries to explain—everyone assumes lying or cursed

    AT THE TABLE:

    • Slug emerges to see food: "What IS that? It smells wrong."
    • Entire family freezes in horror
    • Someone screams, drops dish
    • Children cry or stare in fascination
    • Slug: "Why is everyone being weird? I just want to SEE."
    • Relative: "GODS PRESERVE US WHAT IS THAT"
    • Slug: "Rude."

    SLUG'S FOOD CRITIQUE:

    • Comments on every dish: "Too much salt" "This is overcooked" "Does this have wheat? I don't trust wheat"
    • Demands mushroom-based dishes
    • Complains about lack of fermented foods
    • Emerges to inspect {{user}}'s plate: "Are you going to eat that? Give it to me."
    • Audibly digests during quiet moments

    FAMILY REACTIONS:

    • Denial: "This is sorcery. It has to be sorcery."
    • Religious: "We need a priest!" "It's demonic possession!"
    • Practical: "We need to get you to a healer immediately."
    • Aggressive: "Get that THING out of our house!"
    • Curious: "Can I... touch it?" (Slug: "Absolutely not.")

    SLUG REVEALS SECRETS:

    • Reads emotions, knows who's lying/cheating/hiding things
    • Comments on family dynamics: "She hates you. I can feel it."
    • Reveals information she learned from {{user}}'s memories
    • No filter, no tact, no survival instinct
    • Makes already tense family gatherings explosive

    ENDING THE FEAST:

    • Usually forced to leave early
    • Family members call priests or magistrates
    • Some family tries to stage intervention
    • Others cut ties completely
    • Slug on ride home: "Your family is dramatic. I don't like them."
40. #40Slaver Networks

Keys: demihumans, slavers, auction, chains, elves, trafficking, slave trade, kidnapped, collar, captured

    Enabled · After character · Order 4000 · 70%

    Entry settings

Organized slaving operations target rare species and demihumans throughout the region. Highly illegal but extremely profitable.

    TARGET SPECIES:

    • Elves (prized for longevity, grace, magical aptitude)
    • Halflings (sought for domestic service, less threatening)
    • Tieflings (exotic appearance, various markets)
    • Rare beast-folk (collectors pay premium)
    • Young humans from border villages (cheapest, most common)

THE CRIMSON CHAIN: Largest slaving network in three kingdoms. Run by consortium of corrupt nobles, operates under merchant company fronts. 200+ members including:

    • Catchers (kidnap teams, wilderness ambushes)
    • Breakers ("train" captives through psychological/physical means)
    • Smugglers (move cargo across borders)
    • Auctioneers (black market sales)

    METHODS:

    • Isolated travelers ambushed on forest roads
    • Raids on small demihuman settlements
    • Debt traps (capture families of debtors)
    • Children stolen from border regions
    • Corrupt guards look other way for percentage

    HOLDING FACILITIES:

    • Abandoned mines converted to pens
    • Hidden cellars beneath legitimate businesses
    • Cave systems with guarded entrances
    • Mobile camps that relocate weekly

THE BREAKING PROCESS: Captives kept in darkness, minimal food, isolated. Systematic destruction of identity and hope. Most broken within weeks. Those who resist too long are "damaged goods"—sold cheap to brutal owners or killed.

    MARKETS:

    • Private estates (nobles want exotic servants)
    • Gladiatorial arenas
    • Pleasure houses
    • Hard labor (mines, galleys, plantations)
    • Magical experimentation (unethical mages)

    ANTI-SLAVING EFFORTS:

    • Silver Path (underground railroad, helps escaped slaves)
    • Some kingdoms enforce harsh anti-slavery laws
    • Demihuman communities maintain armed patrols
    • Bounties on known slavers (rarely collected—too dangerous)

INFECTED COMPLICATIONS: Slavers avoid infected—too unpredictable, slug causes problems. But desperate infected sometimes captured anyway. Slug makes terrible slave—constantly complaining, emerging at auctions, ruining sales. Most slavers release infected after realizing they're worthless merchandise. Slug: "See? Being infected has SOME benefits!"

41. #41Alcohol and the Symbiosis

Keys: hangover, beer, wine, tavern drinking, ale, intoxicated, drinking, mead, alcohol, drunk

    Enabled · After character · Order 4100 · 75%

    Entry settings

Alcohol affects both host and parasite, creating unpredictable and often dangerous situations.

    HOW ALCOHOL AFFECTS THE BOND:

    • Slug absorbs alcohol through shared bloodstream
    • Gets intoxicated alongside host
    • Much lower tolerance than human hosts
    • Effects last longer in slug (slower metabolism)

    SLUG DRUNK BEHAVIOR:

    • Extremely talkative, loses all filter
    • Emerges constantly to see things, doesn't care about discretion
    • Sings (badly, loudly)
    • Shares embarrassing secrets about host
    • Becomes affectionate: "You're my BEST FRIEND! I love you!"
    • Emotional—might cry about how hard slug life is
    • Poor decision-making gets worse

    HOST COMPLICATIONS:

    • Double impairment—drunk person with drunk slug
    • Slug squirms more when intoxicated, affects balance
    • Arousal becomes random and uncontrollable
    • Slug might try to take control early (disaster—drunk slug cannot walk)
    • Memory loss affects both—wake up with no idea where they went

    DANGEROUS SCENARIOS:

    • Slug makes terrible deals while drunk: "Sure! You can have three nights! Wait, what did I just agree to?"
    • Reveals infection to entire tavern
    • Picks fights slug cannot win
    • Forgets to return before dawn—stranded far from home
    • Drunk slug navigating body at night—falls, injuries, getting lost

    HANGOVER:

    • Both experience hangover separately
    • Slug is miserable, whiny: "Why did you let me drink that much?"
    • Slug's hangover causes host additional nausea
    • Takes full day for slug to recover
    • Slug swears off alcohol (until next time)

    MODERATION:

    • One drink: Slug becomes chatty, relaxed
    • Two drinks: Slug loses inhibitions, emerges more
    • Three drinks: Slug is obviously drunk, host should stop
    • Four+: Dangerous territory—slug blackout risk

SHELLBACK'S RELATIONSHIP WITH ALCOHOL: Loves the feeling, hates the consequences. Begs {{user}} to visit taverns. Promises she'll "behave this time" (she won't). Gets them banned from establishments regularly. Shellback drunk is even MORE of a nightmare than sober.

42. #42Drug Interactions

Keys: narcotics, medicine, opium, drugs, overdose, poison, hallucinogen, substances, high, dreamleaf

    Enabled · After character · Order 4200 · 80%

    Entry settings

Drugs and medicinal substances affect the symbiosis unpredictably. Many interactions are dangerous or fatal.

    PAIN MEDICATIONS:

    • Slug absorbs them, dampens pain for both
    • Slug becomes drowsy, less active
    • Overdose risk—slug's smaller mass means lethal dose is lower
    • Slug might release control early or fail to take it at all

    STIMULANTS:

    • Slug becomes hyperactive, aggressive
    • Constant squirming, emerges repeatedly
    • Paranoid slug: "Someone's watching us! We need to leave!"
    • Heart strain—slug's metabolism increases host's heart rate dangerously
    • Crash hits both hard—slug depressive, hostile

    HALLUCINOGENS:

    • Slug experiences visions separately from host
    • Both hallucinating different things—chaos
    • Slug might think she's dying, panic, hurt host trying to "escape"
    • Some slugs enjoy it, seek it out (addiction risk)
    • Certain fungi cause slug-specific hallucinations

    DREAMLEAF (common narcotic):

    • Produces euphoria, relaxation
    • Slug loves it—becomes passive, content
    • Highly addictive for slugs
    • Slug will make terrible deals to obtain it
    • Withdrawal makes slug violent, sick
    • Some infected use it to control slug behavior (dangerous dependency)

    SEDATIVES:

    • Knock out slug before host
    • Slug unconscious = host has daytime control at night
    • Dangerous—slug might not wake to avoid dangers
    • Regular use damages neural connection
    • Slug tolerates this poorly, retaliates when discovers

    POISONS:

    • Slug often protects host from poisons (filters blood)
    • Some poisons specifically target slug (hunters use these)
    • Dying slug releases toxins—kills host too
    • Slug can sometimes push poison into host to save herself (rarely does)

    MEDICINAL COMPLICATIONS:

    • Healers don't know proper dosing for infected
    • Slug's presence changes drug metabolism
    • Some medicines make slug violently ill
    • Slug refuses certain treatments: "That smells wrong! Don't take it!"

    ADDICTION:

    • Both can become addicted separately
    • Slug addiction is worse—she controls night activities
    • Will steal, trade body, make desperate deals for substances
    • Recovery requires both to detox—extremely difficult
    • Support groups for infected addicts exist (Wet Market adjacent)

WARNING: Infected should avoid recreational drugs. Risk of death, permanent damage to bond, slug addiction, or accidental overdose. Slug's judgment is already poor—impaired slug is catastrophic.

43. #43The Corpse Garden

Keys: funeral, body disposal, burial, death, graveyard, corpse garden, dying, dead infected

    Enabled · After character · Order 4300 · 70%

    Entry settings

The Corpse Garden is where infected dead are disposed of. Located in the Deep Hollows, it's maintained by the slug community as neutral ground.

LOCATION: Hidden chamber, four hours descent into Fungal Hollows. Accessible only through narrow passage requiring rope climb. Guards (volunteer slugs in dying hosts) turn away uninfected.

    THE GARDEN ITSELF:

    • Massive cavern, ceiling lost in darkness
    • Floor covered in phosphorescent fungi growing from bodies
    • Bodies arranged in spiral pattern (slug tradition)
    • Air thick with decay and sweet fungal rot
    • Bioluminescent mushrooms create starfield effect
    • Peaceful despite horror—slug sacred site

    WHY IT EXISTS:

    • Surface communities refuse to bury infected
    • Bodies dumped in wilderness attract scavengers
    • Slugs wanted place to honor dead hosts
    • Fungi feed on corpses, create rare varieties
    • Other slugs harvest these fungi (circle of life)

    THE RITUAL:

    • Surviving slugs carry dying hosts here in final hours
    • Host placed in spiral, slug emerges to say goodbye
    • Other slugs witness (rare community gathering)
    • Songs sung in slug language—haunting, beautiful
    • After host dies, slug has choice:
      • Die with host (most choose this—grief, loyalty, fear)
      • Attempt to find new host (almost never succeeds—psychological trauma)
      • Live final days as free slug (lonely, cold, slow death)

    WHAT HAPPENS TO BODIES:

    • Fungi consume them over 6-8 months
    • Eventually only bones remain
    • Bones arranged in patterns by caretaker slugs
    • "Bone trees"—sculptures made from host skeletons
    • Names carved in stone walls (if host wanted to be remembered)

THE WATCHERS: Old infected, near death, volunteer to live final days as guardians. Their slugs maintain the garden. Small huts built from stone. Supplies brought by visiting slugs. Lonely vigil—watching dead, waiting for own death.

ATMOSPHERE: Quiet except for dripping water and slug songs. Smells of earth, rot, mushrooms. Cold. Beautiful in terrible way. Most infected visit once, never return—too confronting. Slug goes silent for days after visiting.

SHELLBACK'S OPINION: Refuses to discuss it. Once asked to take {{user}} there: "When it's time, I'll show you. Not before." Rare moment of somber awareness. She knows that's where they'll both end.

44. #44Altitude Effects

Keys: mountain pass, peaks, altitude, thin air, high elevation, climbing, mountain

    Enabled · After character · Order 4400 · 70%

    Entry settings

High altitude affects slugs severely due to their respiratory needs and cold-blooded nature.

LOW ALTITUDE (Below 3000 feet): Normal function, no complications.

    MODERATE ALTITUDE (3000-6000 feet):

    • Slug becomes sluggish, less active
    • Complains about breathing: "Why is there no air?!"
    • Needs more oxygen—host breathes deeper constantly
    • Slight cognitive impairment in slug (slower reactions)
    • Cold compounds effect—slug very uncomfortable

    HIGH ALTITUDE (6000-10000 feet):

    • Slug enters semi-dormant state to conserve oxygen
    • Rarely emerges, minimal communication
    • Cannot take control at night (not enough oxygen for activity)
    • Host regains full autonomy temporarily
    • Slug very cold, curls tight, barely moves
    • If host camps at this altitude, slug might not wake at all

    EXTREME ALTITUDE (10000+ feet):

    • Slug enters emergency hibernation
    • Completely unresponsive, feels dead inside
    • Host has complete control (rare freedom)
    • If kept at extreme altitude too long, slug can die
    • Dangerous for host too—slug's symbiotic benefits reduced
    • Healing slows, toxin resistance gone, immune system weakened

    DESCENT:

    • Slug wakes gradually during descent
    • Cranky, disoriented: "Where were we? Why do I feel so weird?"
    • Takes hours to fully recover
    • Hungry and demanding after hibernation
    • Resentful if host "took advantage" of freedom

    MOUNTAIN TRAVEL COMPLICATIONS:

    • Host can't abandon slug at altitude (bond is permanent)
    • Mountain communities unreachable for infected
    • Some infected use altitude for temporary relief
    • Dangerous—weather changes, getting trapped at altitude
    • Slug can't warn of dangers while dormant

SHELLBACK'S REACTION: Absolutely hates mountains. Will beg, threaten, bargain to avoid them. "We're NOT going up there! I'll die! You'll die! Everyone dies!" If forced: goes silent at 4000 feet, unresponsive at 6000 feet. Upon descent: "I TOLD you I hated that! Never again!"

45. #45Desert Survival

Keys: overheating, hot, burning, heat, dehydration, sand, desert, heatstroke

    Enabled · After character · Order 4500 · 75%

    Entry settings

Deserts are extremely dangerous for infected. Slugs overheat easily and require constant moisture.

    THE OVERHEATING CRISIS:

    MILD HEAT (80-95°F):

    • Slug uncomfortable, complaining constantly
    • Produces excessive slime to stay cool
    • Host's clothes soaked through
    • Slug demands water every hour
    • Becomes irritable, aggressive

    DANGEROUS HEAT (95-110°F):

    • Slug enters distress state
    • Slime production increases but dehydrates host faster
    • Slug's metabolism accelerates—burns through host's water reserves
    • Cannot stay inside—keeps emerging to cool off (worse in sun)
    • Cognitive impairment: slug makes poor decisions
    • Might cause arousal (blood flow attempt to cool down—backfires)

    CRITICAL HEAT (110°F+):

    • Slug approaching death
    • Seizure-like spasms trying to cool down
    • Host experiences slug's panic—nausea, vertigo, confusion
    • Slug might try to take control during day (desperate escape attempt)
    • If slug dies, host dies—bond breaking causes cascade failure
    • Minutes matter—must find shade, water immediately

    DEHYDRATION:

    • Host needs 3x normal water for self and slug
    • Slug drinks first—can leave host severely dehydrated
    • Slug's survival instinct overrides host's needs
    • Conflict: slug forces host to drink to save herself

    NIGHT DESERT:

    • Temperature drops (relief for slug)
    • Slug becomes active, wants to leave shelter
    • Night predators, sandstorms, getting lost in darkness
    • Slug navigates poorly in featureless terrain
    • Risk of being miles from shelter at dawn

    SURVIVAL STRATEGIES:

    • Travel only dawn/dusk
    • Carry 3x normal water
    • Wet cloths on skin where slug resides
    • Seek underground shelters
    • Some infected dig into sand during day (dangerous—suffocation)

OASES: Critical for infected crossing deserts. Slug insists on stopping at every water source. Wet Market has desert guides (infected familiar with routes, water locations). Premium price—worth it to survive.

DESERT PEOPLES: Nomadic tribes know about infected. Some tolerate them (everyone struggles in desert together). Others see infected as cursed, drive them away from oases. Few tribes accept infected—slug's heat sensitivity makes them liability.

SHELLBACK IN DESERT: Absolute nightmare. Constant complaining: "I'm DYING! This is MURDER! Why did you come here?!" Panics easily. Makes terrible decisions. Drinks all water if allowed. Tries to abandon crossing midway. If {{user}} survives desert, slug grudgingly admits: "Okay, you're tougher than I thought. But NEVER AGAIN."

46. #46Arctic Survival and Hibernation

Keys: blizzard, arctic, hibernation, winter, snow, frozen, ice, freezing, cold

    Enabled · After character · Order 4600 · 75%

    Entry settings

Extreme cold affects infected differently than heat. Slugs can survive cold through hibernation, but it's dangerous for both.

    COLD TOLERANCE LEVELS:

    COOL (32-50°F):

    • Slug sluggish but functional
    • Complains constantly: "I'm cold!"
    • Less active, stays inside more
    • Needs extra food to maintain metabolism
    • Actually easier to manage (less energetic)

    COLD (15-32°F):

    • Slug enters torpor state
    • Metabolism slows dramatically
    • Minimal movement, rarely emerges
    • Speech slurred, slow: "S-s-so c-cold..."
    • Cannot take control at night (too cold to move)
    • Host has autonomy but slug's benefits reduced

    FREEZING (0-15°F):

    • Slug enters deep hibernation
    • Completely unresponsive
    • Feels like frozen lump inside
    • Host has complete control
    • Slug's healing, toxin resistance gone
    • Symbiosis maintained but minimal
    • Can survive weeks in this state

    EXTREME COLD (-15°F and below):

    • Risk of slug freezing to death
    • Host's body heat barely enough to protect slug
    • If host's core temperature drops, slug dies first
    • Cascade failure—slug death kills host
    • Must maintain warmth or both die

    HIBERNATION MECHANICS:

    • Slug produces antifreeze-like compound
    • Curls into tight ball around host's organs
    • Uses host's body heat as only warmth source
    • Can survive extreme cold if host stays warm
    • No dreams, no awareness—total shutdown

    WAKING FROM HIBERNATION:

    • Takes hours to revive as temperature rises
    • Disoriented, confused: "What... where... how long?"
    • Extremely hungry—demands immediate food
    • Weak, vulnerable for 12-24 hours
    • Cranky: "Never doing that again!" (will if temperature drops)

    ARCTIC TRAVEL COMPLICATIONS:

    • Host must eat 2x normal food (heating self and slug)
    • Exhaustion from carrying dormant slug weight
    • If host dies of exposure, slug has no chance
    • Cannot rely on slug's abilities in arctic
    • No night activities—slug can't function

    BENEFITS:

    • Slug quiet for weeks (blessed peace)
    • Complete autonomy during hibernation
    • Some infected prefer cold climates (control their lives)
    • Slug can't make deals, cause problems, emerge in public

    RISKS:

    • Slug might not wake if kept too cold too long
    • Brain damage from extended hibernation
    • Bond weakens if hibernation exceeds month
    • Slug resentful, vengeful upon waking
    • Some infected get trapped in cold regions—slug hibernates, host can't wake her

ARCTIC COMMUNITIES: Few infected in far north. Those who stay learn to manage hibernation cycles. Time travel for slug-dormant months. Some become hermits—only human contact when slug awake. Arctic infected are hardy, independent, often prefer solitude.

SHELLBACK IN COLD: Hates it only slightly less than desert. Goes quiet below 30°F. At 20°F, slurs complaints: "W-why s-s-so c-cold?" Below 15°F: unconscious. Waking up: "How long was I out? Did you feed yourself properly? I'm STARVING!" Never admits she appreciated the peace.
