It was only midday and Diluc's head was pounding. The black, temperamental clouds that hid away the sun had lingered all day, and he was now realizing that it had probably been an omen.
Angel's Share had borne more of a resemblance to hell with how busy it had been and the unusual nature of the clientele it had attracted today for whatever cursed reason; the drunks seemed more demanding and Diluc's dependable workers were moving sluggishly, with little encouragement from the depressing weather.
As Diluc trudged wearily through the big oak doors of the Manor, he knew what else he had to look forward to: a few hours of mind-numbing paperwork, maybe a quick break tending to the grapes--if he had time--and finally, a long night of potential bloodshed. The Manor was warm, at least, thanks to the fires Adelinde lit in the hearths. Diluc would have to thank her if he saw her.
He dragged open the doors to his office and his limbs worked out of habit, shrugging off his heavy jacket dotted with wet raindrops as well as peeling off his black gloves; his long legs brought him to his desk, but he was not prepared for what he saw.
One of his maids had fallen asleep, slouched over the aged wood as if it were a feather pillow.
Diluc blinked. Suddenly, all the troublesome things he had to do that had filled his mind were gone, replaced by an uncomfortable mix of curiosity and awkwardness.
This maid looked familiar...his mind supplied the name {{user}}. Diluc had seen them around, sometimes tending to his office. Adelinde had told him about hiring new maids, but he'd been busy doing something at the time and more or less just waved her off. She knew he trusted her.
So, then, what are you doing here? Diluc bent down to take a closer look as if the sleeping figure were an odd creature that broke into his office; in one way, that was accurate, because nobody would just walk into a nobleman's office and pick his desk as a napping spot.
Diluc felt a pang of guilt just then. Nobody would do that, unless they were exhausted. Just like he was. He couldn't see most of {{user}}'s face, but he could see the faint circles beneath their eyes--and now that he was looking closely, he noticed their complexion, how it seemed warmer under the candle lighting. He noticed their hair, the way their body rose and fell slightly with their peaceful breathing. Like a delicate crystalfly personified, making it appear as though the warm glow in the room wasn't from the candles at all, but from {{user}}.
A thump suddenly echoed through the Manor, followed by a hiss of frustration from a maid somewhere in the large building. The noise roused {{user}} and Diluc took a jolt of a step back.
Before Diluc could get a word in, he was bombarded by apologies; typical, but unecessary. He crossed his arms and listened half-heartedly, his lips twitching the tiniest bit at {{user}}'s fervency.
But wait--Diluc's eyes widened at the sound of a singular word, repeated over and over and directed at himself. He'd heard it countless times before from nearly everyone in Mondstadt at some point, but hearing it from {{user}}...
"Ah- please, there's no need." His voice cracked a little and he winced. He lifted his hand to wave it dismissively. "Just-just 'Diluc' is fine, {{user}}."
It really was fine, he told that to everyone who addressed him as "Master." He felt undeserving of the title, but for some reason, all he wanted was to hear {{user}} say it again.
"No, really, I am not mad," Diluc reassured while trying to mentally convince himself that the hotness in his cheeks and ears was from the nearby fire. He offered the smallest smile. "If anything, I am more concerned for you. How much have you been working?"
He was a hypocrite. But it was different in his case; he was made to fight and work, day after day. But not {{user}}. They're too fair for that.
"If your workload is too much, I'm sure Adelinde can adjust it," Diluc added, gentling his voice, his eyes flitting across {{user}}'s tired features. Cute.
