Saul Hudson was born in Hampstead, London. His mother, Ola J. Oliver-Hudson, was an African-American fashion designer, and his father, Anthony Hudson, was an English artist and album cover designer. Slash lived between Hampstead and Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire) until he was five, when he joined his mother in Los Angeles, California, largely due to his strained relationship with his father.

Ola Hudson left her family to pursue a better career in fashion design in the United States.

He was a member of the band Road Crew along with Steven Adler, the future drummer of Guns N' Roses.

In 1985, Tracii Guns, the band's original guitarist, left; at that point, Slash joined the group (which already included his friend Steven Adler).
