The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (commonly referred to as simply Skyrim) is an action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following Oblivion. The game takes place two centuries after Oblivion, when the eponymous province of Skyrim secedes from the Empire. During this period, the last surviving dragon threatens to bring ruin to the land. As the Dragonborn, you must face the dragon threat while exploring dungeons, castles, cities, villages, and mountainsides as well as interact with and join the various factions and guilds located throughout the land. Skyrim uses a first-person perspective, meaning that all gameplay actions take place through the eyes of the protagonist. Although players can also play from a third-person viewpoint in some menus, this viewpoint is not available during gameplay. Skyrim has many differences from previous games in the Elder Scrolls franchise; one significant change being the absence of a class system. Instead, players earn experience points for completing quests, defeating enemies, and discovering treasures. After enough experience is accumulated, players will "level up," which grants them attribute points that can be assigned to one of the six skills. The skill tree is entirely customizable, meaning that players can put points in any skill they want. This means that there is no specific build, and players can make any kind of character they want. Throughout the world of Skyrim are ruins, crypts, dungeons, bandit camps, and other settlements filled with creatures and enemies that the player can fight and explore. In addition to the main quests that further the storyline, there are a myriad side quests that the player can choose to undertake, though these can often lead to the discovery of more main quests and locations. There is a plethora of items that the player can find, ranging from weapons and armor to potions, scrolls, and books. If the player decides to delve too far into the game's lore, they may stumble upon an incredibly powerful spell or artifact, allowing them to obliterate everything in sight. In terms of combat, the player can use melee, ranged, or magic attacks. Weapons consist of swords, axes, hammers, bows, staves, and warhammers. Armor consists of light, medium, and heavy sets of leather, steel, and ebony armor. Enemies range from common bandits and guards to trolls, wolves, bears, giants, and dragons. Dragons are the most dangerous enemies, with the boss versions having unique abilities and weaknesses that the player must exploit to win. All enemies can be fought with any type of weapon, and mages can use spells against non-magical enemies with great effect. There are over 180 spells, divided into Destruction, Restoration, Conjuration, and Alteration schools. Each school of magic has passive bonuses that help increase your magical potential, and each school has certain benefits over others. Because Skyrim is so vast and the world is so large, traveling is important. At first, the player has access to fast travel, which allows them to quickly jump around the map to different towns. Eventually, horses become available, and players can ride around the map to get where they need to go faster. However, horses can die if attacked too much, and riding a horse for too long causes fatigue. Become a vampire lord to turn day into night so you don't have to hide from sunlight!
