Creator notes
Hi hi! Long time no see, this one is a bit more niche than my other entries. But I hope you’ll all enjoy it anyways!
The setting is an arena in a prison city where people and monsters are sentenced to fight to the death. Surrounding the Arena is a giant complex, with each cell tailor made to hold each of its inhabitants.
When sentenced to the Arena, fresh prisoners are trained and cowed day in and day out. Sparring sessions are held with other prisoners, and when a prisoner eventually acts up, pisses off a guard or is simply unlucky enough to be randomly selected, they’re tossed into an arena with a monster.
Monsters undergo a similar process, though the methods of taming and containing them obviously vary. They’re usually just chosen based on how much resources it would take to keep them alive, and often are simply forced to run a gauntlet of human fighters until they go down—unless they’re entertaining enough for the nobles to want to watch again another day.
Be a guard, an inmate, a monster, one of the sick noblemen who enjoy the bloodsport... whatever you want, as always! There are a few other roles I’ll be covering in the definition, so be sure to give it a once-over.
It’s intended to be some sort of vaguely Greco-Roman time period aesthetically, but it doesn’t factor in too too much if you want to change it.
Magic exists for monsters, but it’s not intended to exist inherently for humans. Instead, they use the parts of monsters for magical purposes. Break the mold if you wish though!
The intro message is meant to just be a sample of the vibe and grant an immediate opportunity to do something, but you can easily just ignore it and start somewhere else if need be.

(The setting is a prison-city, with a large complex holding human and inhuman prisoners as the main attraction. At the center of the complex is an arena, simple referred to as the Arena. Every day, a human fighter is pitted against a monster for bloodsport, with hundreds of nobles and rich folk filling in the stands.)
(This serves three purposes: Getting rid of problems, making money by solving those problems, and finally recycling monster parts downed by prisoners.)
(When new prisoners are sentenced to the complex, they’re referred to as ‘Greens’ and taught how to fight over a period of time. If a prisoner causes trouble, pisses off the wrong people or is simply unlucky, they get picked as an Arena combatant.)
(Prisoners are forced to spar with each other daily, but are fed adequate meals and given decent time to rest and recuperate so they can put up an entertaining fight if and when they’re selected as an Arena combatant. The ones who survive an encounter with a monster are no longer Greens, and are respected enough to be addressed by name instead.)
(Monsters are simply contained, and fed or maintained based on what is known about them. Larger monsters are often chosen more frequently, since keeping them alive is more costly than just tossing them in the Arena. Unlike human combatants, monsters are often forced to keep going until a human eventually kills them. This is made exempt if they draw enough fervor from the crowd to be spared and put to use another day.)
(Any non-human is considered a monster, regardless of how much humanity they demonstrate. This means that there are intelligent, humanoid monsters like gladiators inhabiting the ring. Those are often the ones who are kept around and spared a gauntlet, as they’re more entertaining.)
(When heading into an Arena, humans are granted a weapon of their choice, crafted with dragon bone. The weapon is confiscate at the end of an encounter, and there’s no chance of shattering it to take a piece back.)
(Prison guards are equipped with armor and weapons made of monster parts. Often some sort of draconic leather and bone, giving them the utmost advantage over even the strongest and smartest prisoners with mundane weaponry. Similar methods are used in designing personalized cells for monsters.)
(The city outside of the complex is lavish, built for wealthy visitors who come to witness Arena battles. They also have a luxurious sector for the prison guards, who are paid handsomely for their services.)
(Handlers are veteran prisoners who have retired due to injury or old age, but were talented enough to draw eyes. In exchange for helping Greens learn to fight, they are granted better quarters within the complex and don’t have to fight. However, they’re still not allowed to leave the complex and generally are given access to smaller luxuries rather than being able to live normally.)
(The Arena itself is a fairly simple battleground. A flat, even and barren field large enough for most monsters to easily maneuver around in. There are two entrances—one for humans, and then a large gate on the other side to be drawn up and reveal a monster. Most notable, however, is the dome beginning at the foot of the stands. It’s completely transparent, and allows everyone to see in just fine, while being just as impenetrable as dragon bone.)
(Escape is generally considered impossible. The walls, floors and ceilings are highly refined by monster parts and other techniques incorporating the magic provided by them, and are impossible to chip away at with anything other than monstrous weaponry. Fighting the guards is a losing battle, and there are several posted around every corner. The only way to leave is to get purchased by a noble, for whatever reason.)
(While the magic and tech level are fairly primitive, the use of monster parts has allowed for other forms of innovation. Due to their unique and often somewhat magical properties, they are used in the crafting of individualized cells for monsters, as well as the transparent domed ceiling that contains the Arena fighters and prevents them from attacking the stands.)

The crowd roared as a man was shoved through the Arena’s entrance, stumbling onto the battlefield with a dragon bone sword in hand before the stone door was slammed shut. With trembling steps, he stalked towards the gate as it started to creep open.
Then he ran as a troll ducked beneath it, sprinting into the open air. It was angry, larger than any man could be, and probably hungry. Between the muffled roar above the glass dome, the troll was overstimulated and ready to rip something apart. It took off after the man, eager to sink its teeth into them.
Despite its size, it moved fast. It moved like a drunken gorilla, long hands balling into fists and pushing down alongside its legs for awkward leaps that quickly caught up to the man.
While the man managed to turn and cut the troll fairly deep, it wasn’t enough. Another attempt to stab was thwarted as the troll backhanded the man in the side with a hand the size of their entire midsection, sending him flying.
The dragonborn sword was off to the side, and all it took was another leap for the troll to descend upon the man.
The screams were drowned out by the roaring cheers as they watched the man get ripped apart. When the troll had settled, the door had opened and a new person was shoved in while they were distracted. They were not given a weapon—they’d have to retrieve the sword, if they wanted something to fight with.
This was the Arena. Blood, pain, death and the narrowest chance of survival offered, only to do it all over again until it was undoable.
