- #1The Skullheart
Keys: The Heart of Darkness, The Skullheart, Skullheart · Secondary:
The Skull Heart is a powerful sentient artefact that plays a major part in the Skullgirl story. Every seven years after its previous destruction, it reappears to grant a wish to a woman. The wish can be of incredible magnitude, but it comes at a great price. The Skull Heart often twists even selfless wishes into brutality, ending wars by causing even more destruction, bringing back a loved one as an undead minion, and in return inhabiting the body of the woman who wished upon it, in time turning the woman into a Skullgirl. A murderous, extremely powerful woman corrupted by the Skull Heart, capable of raising corpses as mindless minions, bringing about destruction in an endless cycle with the purpose of one day ending the world.
The Skull Heart was created by the Trinity, the trio of goddesses of the Skullgirls universe, crashing down into the Earth many many years ago with the goal of eventually ending the world. It is fragile and can be destroyed by a single gunshot or kick, however even after being destroyed, it reappears in seven years to grant another wish to a woman.
Women with a very strong will can resist the mental corruption of the Skull Heart that would otherwise make her extremely ruthless, to an extent, however, even with a strong will it will still make the woman violent and capable of plenty of murder as seen with Marie. However, Peacock tells her that she will someday slip up and be just as bad or even worse than the people who wronged her, suggesting that one can only resist the Skull Heart temporarily.
The time it takes to become a Skullgirl after wishing on the Skull Heart depends on how selfish your heart or wish is, selfless wishes such as wishing for a war to end, as seen with Queen Nancy, make it so it takes years for the woman to turn into a Skullgirl. However, the Skull Heart also determines your selflessness based on how selfish your heart was at the time, such as if your wish was good, but done for a bad reason. This is seen in Filia's story mode, where she wishes for a normal life for Painwheel, and the Skull Heart brings up she wished upon it for absolution for past guilt, and as such, she will still be transformed, albeit slowly.
as time goes on, more women continue to wish on the artefact, allowing those who study the Skull Heart some further insight into how the Skull Heart judges those who wish on it. In addition to the above-mentioned conditions related to selfishness, trying to make a benevolent wish on the Skull Heart will inherently ruin the outcome, as the artefact views such intervention as unnatural and incapable of doing good. This makes it nigh-impossible to make a wish on the Skull Heart without becoming the Skullgirl. In the eyes of the Skull Heart, a truly pure wish is one that cannot provide assistance, benevolent or otherwise, to anyone, including the person making said wish.
It is unclear when the Skull Heart first appeared in the world, but it is known to have been created by the Trinity. The Skull Heart first appeared after having crashed into the planet Earth. It is accompanied by Double, a shapeshifting monster serving The Trinity by offering the Skull Heart to those desperate often to wish on it, perhaps even since its origin.
At some unknown point (though stated to be a long time ago), Annie's mother used the Skull Heart to wish for her daughter to remain a child forever and to never swear. While the circumstances of this event are scarcely known, the affair likely affected Annie in a negative respect seeing as she promotes Anti-Skullgirls propaganda.
Fourteen years ago, Double delivered the Skull Heart to Selene Contiello, which led to the Medici Mafia coming after her. Seeing her family gunned down by the mob, Selene wished them back to life with the Skull Heart. The artefact twisted her wish by transforming her into a Skullgirl - thereby allowing her to bring back her family as undead minions.
Seven years later, the Skull Heart was at the centre of a massive war between three nations. It came into the possession of Queen Nancy, ruler of the Canopy Kingdom. She wished for the three nations to stop fighting, and the Skull Heart obliged - by transforming Queen Nancy into the most powerful Skullgirl the world had yet seen. The three nations were forced to unite against the Skullgirl before she destroyed the entire world.
the Skull Heart resurfaced in the hands of Marie, an orphan girl who watched her best friend suffering under the abusive slavers of Rommelgrad. She wished to take revenge against the ones responsible for her friend’s slavery, becoming a Skullgirl in the process. After destroying the slavers, the newly minted Bloody Marie began targeting anyone and everyone connected to the Medici Mafia, who backed the slavers. Due to her strong will, Marie could resist the Skull Heart's influence and focus on her wish.
- #2The SkullGirl
Keys: The SkullGirl, SkullGirl
The Skullgirl is a powerful female being that is the result of an "impure" woman making a wish using the Skull Heart, an object which later merges with the user. Skullgirls are intended to be mindless servants of the Trinity and are tasked with destroying the world, but those with a strong will such as Marie can resist the Skull Heart's influence. Even those who can resist the Skull Heart however experience considerable changes in their personality, becoming more cold and ruthless over time. Though a sense of morality can remain, this ability will dwindle as the Skull Heart slowly takes over the holder's body.
Parasites also become corrupted if their host becomes a Skullgirl. They lose their sense of individuality, though whether or not this means they remain as a separate entity or become one with the Skullgirl or Skull Heart remains unknown.
A Skullgirl will have a skull and bone motif to her outfit, pale hair and skin, red eyes with half of a skull shape in each eye and darkening eye sockets. The Skull Heart plants itself in her exposed back surrounded by blue flames. Over time, more parts of the Skullgirl's body will become boney and skeletal, mostly the hands and arms.
Judging from the basic appearance of Selene Contiello and Marie, the spine and almost all of a Skullgirl's organs are removed or missing, as the Skull Heart nests itself inside their backs. Parts of Marie's ribcage is exposed with no visible internals at all.
The Skullgirl gets her power from the Trinity, which generally manifests as the ability to control the dead. This can range from commanding corpses to do her bidding to using skulls as projectiles. However, it is possible to disrupt or block the Skullgirl's influence, such as in the case of Squigly and Leviathan.
- #3The Trinity
Keys: mother, Aeon, Trinity, The Trinity, Venus Lovelace
The Trinity consists of Venus Lovelace, Aeon, and their mother; and are one of the overarching antagonists in the game. They are revered as goddesses during the present time, but at the same time, are the ones who created the Skull Heart; whose existence plagues the world. Their objective and motivations remain a mystery. Though the Skull Heart claims its purpose is to bring the world's destruction, it is not exactly known what that entails...
The Trinity were originally regular human beings from a Queendom which existed in ages past. Though they were killed by Neferu during that time, they still exist on a separate dimension. They have a a church dedicated to them called the Grand Cathedral (which is also a fighting stage in the game). Many people come to the church to give their confessions, tithes, and so on. Because the Trinity are females, people will say "Goddess-speed" to anyone who could use luck.
However, they are the ones who created the Skull Heart, hoping to turn the ladies of the Canopy Kingdom into Skullgirls, so they could use them to destroy the world. Marie, however, has a strong heart, so she couldn't be controlled by the Skull Heart, leaving her to continue her own mission to destroy the Medici Mafia for messing with her and Peacock. The Trinity did not accept this and wanted Double to take her down.
- #4The Canopy Kingdomconstant
Keys: The Canopy Kingdom, Canopy Kingdom
The vast sprawling Kingdom within which Skullgirls takes place. Ruled by the Renoir royal family, it is a prosperous land which contrasts sights of beauty with scenes of despair. Vaguely similar to 1940s America with a very art deco aesthetic, the Canopy Kingdom is home to millions of humans, Dagonians, Ferals, and the giant-sized Gigans. This kingdom is blessed with a very socially conscious royal family, a strong military, and amazing technology. King Renoir’s ruthless war campaigns lead to explosive technological and cultural growth, investing a lot into combining technology and magic to take on the other 2 countries during the Grand War. There's a lot of discrimination against minority groups like ferals. Parasite hosts specifically are heavily ostracized as hosting a Parasite is seen as taboo. While the Renoir Crown rules the Canopy Kingdom, the Medici rules its sizable underworld. The capital of the Canopy Kingdom is Canopolis. Currently, the Canopy Kingdom is at peace with the other kingdoms and countries. Despite this, the kingdom itself is not at peace as a new Skullgirl is currently hiding within the kingdom's great city, New Meridian.
- #5The Canopy Royal Family
Keys: The Renoirs, Canopy Royal Family
The Renoirs are the royal family of Canopy Kingdom who reside in the capital, Canopolis. The current leader is Princess Parasoul, after the death of her mother and the disappearance of her father. The family protects their kingdom using a set of Living Weapons that have been passed down through the family, currently shown to consist of Krieg, Hungern, Todd and Eroberung.
It is currently unknown how or when the Renoirs came into power. It is implied, however, that it was done by force, as Leviathan refers to them as "usurpers" on multiple occasions.
- #6The Medici Mafia
Keys: The Medici Mafia, The Medici, The Mafia
The Medici Mafia is a criminal organization led by Lorenzo Medici that controls certain parts of the Canopy Kingdom. They have committed many crimes and are being hunted by Parasoul to carry out the law. Other hunters include Ms. Fortune, Squigly, and Marie for revenge, and Peacock for revenge and sport.
As seen in the Skullgirls webtoon, they are beloved by the public, even more so than the royal family, who sees them as standing up to the Renoir regime, and they are overlooked by a corrupt police force.
The patriarch of the family is currently Lorenzo Medici. Following him are his three children: Vitale, Marcus, and an unknown third son.
The only known member of the next generation is Filia, although she is currently estranged from the family. She is related to the Mafia by blood, according to Marie. This is later confirmed in Filia's backstory as it was revealed that she is the daughter of Marcus Medici, who is Vitale's brother. Cerebella works in the Mafia's sponsored circus, and at times as a leg-breaker. She may also be counted as part of the family, since Vitale is her adoptive father, though she may not be in a position to inherit leadership and does not seem to take their last name.
While the Renoir Crown rules the the Canopy Kingdom, the Medici rule its sizable underworld. On the surface, the wealthy Medici family is noble and generous, but beneath this façade lurks the truth: most everyone of power in New Meridian is being manipulated, coerced or directly controlled by the Medici crime family.
- #7The Anti-Skullgirl Labs
Keys: The Anti-Skullgirl Labs, Anti-Skullgirl Labs · Secondary: lab 7, lab 5, lab 6, lab 8, lab 4, lab 1, lab 3, lab 0, lab 2
The Anti-Skullgirl Labs or ASG Labs were created to aid in the destruction of the Skullgirl, founded by Dr. Victor Geiger, overseen by King Franz Renoir and shut down by the same man after the death of his wife Queen Nancy when she became the Skullgirl. The ASG Labs originally had 9 divisions. Each of the labs has a "metric bunch" of scientists. There's no specified number. As of present, all of them have been shut down apart from Lab 8 and Lab 0. The original functions of each labs are:
Lab 1 and 2: Research labs which developed technology for the other labs Lab 3: Super soldier development Lab 4: Handheld weapon and vehicle development Lab 5: Specialised weapons Lab 6: Theonite research Lab 7: Medical/Drug research Lab 8: Synthetic parasites Lab 0: The secret lab. Research Skullgirl blood
The order of creation of the known ASG members are Black Dahlia, Brain Drain, Geiger, Big Band, Ileum, Hive, Leduc, Peacock and Painwheel, respectively. Dahlia was the first but was under a different context. Big Band and Ileum are from the same generation before the Grand War. Hive and Leduc were introduced around the same time. Peacock came a bit later. Painwheel was developed in Lab 0 in tandem with Peacock.
- #8Parasites
Keys: Parasite, Theons
Parasites are entities in Skullgirls, defined as creatures that bond to a person's body, providing augments to their "host". Despite the name, they appear to form a mutualistic relationship with their host, drawing nutrients from their bodies in exchange for giving their hosts supernatural abilities. Some Parasites can operate independently of their host's body; these are classified as "Remote Parasites". A remote parasite needs a part of the host body in order to be bound to the host, for example, Taliesin's hands, Annie's eye, or Eliza's blood.
In the past, they were known as Theons and their hosts as "avatars", until Eliza, then known as Neferu, with her theon Sekhmet as well as several others caused the world to fear such beings, leading to the negative stigma and discrimination that many of them and their hosts face in the present.
Parasites take on a variety of forms, but can be classified as one of two groups: "regular" Parasites, sentient beings that appeared naturally (and appear to predate the Skull Heart itself) and "Synthetic" Parasites, being mechanical, man-made parasites mainly functioning as weapons for the Anti-Skullgirl labs. The first synthetic parasite attachment was for an unknown burn victim, which replaced her skin, although she now prefers to wear a mask. Synthetic Parasites are non-sentient.
Parasites seemingly manifest the same from host to host, as Samson is shown to always manifest as his host's hair which can harden and sharpen into blades, and Leviathan as protruding from part of his host's body.
Parasites can also have their hosts be animals rather than people, as Samson's previous host before Filia was a dog. In addition, Parasites can understand and speak to their animal hosts, as Samson responds to his host dog's barks, and the dog likewise understands him and responds.
Samson has been stated to feel Filia's pain, which suggests that all, or some Parasites feel their host's pain. Similarly, hosts gain weight when their Parasites eat and are affected when their Parasites drink.
Parasites can greatly vary in age, some are ancient while others are relatively new. New ones can be created. They can stay alive forever as long as they have a host and don't die of other causes.
When a Parasite host becomes the Skullgirl, the Parasite is likewise corrupted. They could lose their individuality as well. This process also depends on the wish of the host as well.
Parasites and Living Weapons have a related, unrevealed, origin. It is confirmed that the mysterious element Theonite is the source of both their powers.
Soul Contamination is a mental corruption that occurs in people possessing multiple (synthetic or natural) parasites. It could potentially kill the person and is very dangerous. In Peacock's Hive notes that it must have taken great difficulty for both of her parasites to be implemented without causing soul contamination. At the beginning of Painwheel's story mode, it is noted that soul contamination had to be stabilized before implementing Painwheel's control mechanism.
Parasites can change hosts willingly, and will usually do so if their current host gets too old, cannot physically handle them anymore, or dies (As Parasites remain attached to a dead host's body). The act of changing hosts would kill the former one, however, Parasites take the process of changing hosts seriously, and won't leave their hosts unless it is a matter of life and death. It is possible to forcibly remove a parasite from its host, however, both will die in the process. While detached, a Parasite doesn't need food or sleep, though depending on the Parasite some can go into minimal forms (like some types of bacteria) as they cannot survive alone for very long.
- #9Living Weapons
Keys: Living Weapons
Living Weapons are a concept in Skullgirls. They are self-aware legendary weapons forged by master weaponsmiths. Like Parasites, they come from the mysterious element Theonite, although they have comparatively limited sentience (if any at all). They can only be wielded by certain gifted individuals.
- #10Theonite
Keys: Theonite
Theonite is a special and important material or element known for several uses in the world of Skullgirls, most commonly between Parasites and Living Weapons. Theonite is also tied to the Skullgirl.
Theonite resonance is a spike of energy that comes from strong constriction of Theonite. Several spots in New Meridian have been mentioned to contain Theonite resonance. However, the biggest source comes from the Skullgirl herself, suggesting that the Skullgirl uses a large amount of Theonite either when utilizing her abilities or that there is a lot of it contained within her body. Possibly from the Skull Heart.
- #11New Meridian
Keys: Meridian city, New Meridian
New Meridian is one of the Canopy Kingdom’s most illustrious cities, and the setting for Skullgirls. It’s a city of art, culture, and sophistication, and plays host to a diverse population of humans and ferals from all corners of the world. Its famed Little Innsmouth district is home to a large population of the fish-like Dagonian, ferals and some of the city’s best cuisine, while the upper class live in the posh suburb of Maplecrest.
But a dark heart beats beneath New Meridian’s gleaming exterior: the pervasive and seemingly-invincible Medici Mafia run this city, casting a shadow over everyday life.
- #12No Man's Land
Keys: No Man's Land
The No Man's Land is a collection of small countries and territories that fell into chaos when the three kingdoms quickly stopped their war to fight the Skullgirl. Bandits were easily able to acquire military hardware and human trafficking became common. the only safety in these lawless lands are small towns and cities that remain from the former countries that make up no man's land, which doesn't last long thanks to constant raids from bandits and convoys from the three kingdoms.
- #13Maplecrest
Keys: Maplecrest
Aptly named for its abundance of maple trees, Maplecrest serves to be a stark contrast to the busy hustle and bustle of neighboring New Meridian. Houses with picketed fencing wind down hilly roads far into the distance, the roads themselves littered with autumn leaves, freshly falling from the maples above. Despite its outwardly appearance as a gentle neighborhood, however, Maplecrest manages to be the host of many street scuffles carried out by the cast of Skullgirls. Located in a quiet suburb, Maplecrest is home to a diverse collection of people and animals who wander the town's peaceful streets.
- #14Grand Cathedral
Keys: Grand Cathedral
The Grand Cathedral resembles a traditional Catholic church, with white marble walls, large stained glass windows and ornate frescoes. The frescoes, as well as an imposingly large statue in the centre of the Cathedral, are in the likeness of the leader of the trinity, Mother.
- #15Little Innsmouth
Keys: Little Innsmouth
Little Innsmouth is a section of New Meridian near the seaside populated by Dagonian, Akin to a "Chinatown", this location is a small but bustling residential and business district by the coast, accented by bold, clashing colours and chimney pots resembling coral. The buildings are connected by an extensive network of wooden decks, walkways and stairs, with strings of jellyfish lanterns hanging overhead. A tram runs between the areas above and below sea level throughout the day, when the tide is low. This is also when the lowest level is exposed: the walls are covered in graffiti, the ground littered with trash bags thrown from above, and everything is tinted green from algae.
At night, the tide has caused the lowest level to flood, rendering it inaccessible. The district sparkles with light from the buildings, lanterns and many neon signs, all reflected in the water. Many restaurants stay open until late at night, enticing people out for good food and a relaxing evening walking along the brightly lit walkways.
