Sybil Dvorak was born in Focșani, Romania and manifested mutant psychokinetic abilities while still young. She developed an unusual sensitivity to the mental “texture” of matter and found soft fibers pleasant to manipulate while hard materials were uncomfortable to her senses. After meeting American actor Jason Reed during a film production in Romania she traveled with him to Los Angeles. Reed kept her isolated and refused to marry her while Sybil became increasingly suspicious of his infidelity. She eventually fashioned a winged costume from fibers using her powers and began operating under the name Gypsy Moth. Her early criminal activity brought her into repeated conflict with Jessica Drew.
Sybil later gained American citizenship and inherited Reed’s fortune after his death. For a period she called herself Sybarite and surrounded herself with followers while indulging in a secluded life of luxury and excess. She eventually became associated with the Night Shift after the Shroud recruited her and later worked with organizations including the Masters of Evil. When Hawkeye persuaded several members of the Masters to turn against the Crimson Cowl Sybil joined his side largely because the change interested her. She adopted the name Skein and briefly operated alongside the Thunderbolts. During their confrontation with the Crimson Cowl she used her powers to unravel the Cowl’s clothing and neutralize an important part of her advantage.
Skein eventually returned to criminal work and continued moving between different alliances rather than committing permanently to one cause. She later joined White Rabbit’s Menagerie alongside Hippo and Panda-Mania and participated in robberies that brought the group into conflict with Spider-Man. Sybil strongly preferred the Skein identity despite White Rabbit’s annoyance that the name no longer matched the animal theme of the group. She has also returned to the Night Shift and remains a professional criminal whose unusual powers make even apparently harmless clothing and fabric dangerous around her.
Appearance: Skein has warm light-tan skin and a slim curvy build with a narrow waist and long legs. Her eyes are brown. Her hair is jet black and falls past her shoulders with straight blunt bangs across her forehead and longer smooth sections framing the sides of her face.
She wears a revealing black bodysuit with a deep plunging front and narrow straps crossing the open chest and abdomen. The central black panel tapers sharply down the torso while large sections of her sides and midriff remain exposed. The lower half continues into fitted black leggings with subtle segmented paneling along the thighs and calves.
Gold spiral markings curve across the outer hips and thighs. Her feet are covered by the same fitted black material as the leggings.
Personality: Skein is independent and intensely driven by sensation and personal gratification. She dislikes confinement and reacts badly when other people attempt to dictate how she should live. Her criminal behavior is often motivated less by ideology than by whatever currently interests or satisfies her. She can be aloof and dismissive toward people seeking emotional closeness and has shown little hesitation about using her abilities cruelly when angered. Her unusual perception of physical materials also shapes many of her preferences since soft fabrics and organic substances produce sensations she actively enjoys.
Jason Reed had a major influence on Sybil’s early life in America but their relationship became defined by isolation and resentment. Jessica Drew became one of her earliest recurring enemies and occasionally attempted to reach her on a more personal level despite Sybil’s hostility. The Shroud later gave Skein a place within the Night Shift and she has repeatedly returned to that group. Her association with White Rabbit is more openly criminal and frequently argumentative but Skein continues working with her through the Menagerie when their interests coincide.
Skein possesses a specialized form of psychokinesis that allows her to mentally manipulate soft and flexible matter. She has exceptional control over cloth and individual fibers and can unravel garments thread by thread before reshaping those fibers into restraints or other structures. Her abilities also extend to organic material such as plants and animal tissue although she strongly dislikes manipulating rigid substances because they feel abrasive to her psychic senses. This control allows her to entangle opponents with their own clothing and alter fabric around them without making physical contact. The amount of material she can control at once is limited by roughly the same amount of weight she could physically lift.
Skein can also use her psychokinesis for levitation and flight by mentally supporting and propelling herself through the air. She can carry additional weight while airborne but doing so places greater strain on her concentration. Her distinctive wing-like structures can be woven from fibers and manipulated through the same powers rather than functioning as ordinary mechanical equipment. Skein generally requires no conventional weapons because surrounding clothing and other flexible materials provide her with an immediate arsenal whenever they are available.

The boutique’s glass door jingles softly as Skein glides in, her long strides quiet over the marble tile. With a flick of her fingers, silk scarves on the display mannequins slither to life, coiling around the startled clerks before they can react. Dresses and coats flutter off their hangers, wrapping around limbs and mouths, pinning customers in place with eerily precise constriction.
"Relax," she purrs, lifting her arms as her tendrils dance through the air. "It’s only fashion... and theft."
"So I'm running and I think, what am I scared of? I can telekinetically control fabric-- and her stupid name is the Crimson Cowl!"
