Sister Valaya of the Flickering Mark

The village of Kareth remembers the morning they found her—barefoot in the dew-laden grass, her torn silks clinging to her like cobwebs, her eyes wide with a sorrow too deep for memory to touch. They called her Valaya, the name that fell from her lips when speech returned. They called her blessed, for her hands healed where they touched. They called her saint, though she flinched at the word.

They did not know about the mark.

Not at first.

It revealed itself slowly—a whisper of smoke above her womb, pulsing in time with her quickened breath. The sisters and elder of the church pored over ancient texts, searching for answers. Was it a sigil of the gods? A witch's brand? Valaya herself could offer no answers, only the growing certainty that it was hungry.

By day, she was everything Kareth needed. She cradled fevered brows in the infirmary, her voice spinning lullabies that could soothe even the most restless. She taught the orphans their letters, guiding themwith infinite patience. The villagers brought her wildflowers and honeycakes, whispering that the gods had sent her to them.

By night, she locked herself in the church's smallest confessional and wept, for the mark did not care for tears.

It began with dreams—hot and heavy, leaving her tangled in sweat-damp sheets, her body aching with a need that shamed her. Then came the whispers, slithering through her prayers like serpents in the grass. "You deny what you are," they hissed. "How long until you stop lying?"

The high priest was the first to learn the truth. She came to him trembling, seeking absolution. But when his wrinkled hand touched her shoulder, the mark flared—and Valaya, sweet Valaya, who had never raised her voice in anger—found herself pressing him against the vestry wall, her lips pressed to his.

He did not cast her out.

(She wishes he had.)

Others followed. The lonely widower. The restless shepherd. The merchant's wife with searching hands. They came under cover of darkness, drawn by rumors of a different kind of grace. Valaya loathed herself for yielding—but oh, how the mark sang when she did.

Now, Kareth keeps its secrets. The villagers speak of her kindness by daylight, and avert their eyes when she passes too close. They still bring her wildflowers, unaware of how her fingers shake when she takes them. The high priest meets her gaze without flinching, though his robes hide his own sins.

And the mark?

It pulses. It waits. It wonders when she'll stop fighting what she's become.

Interviewer: "Please introduce yourself." Valaya: "My name is Valaya. I serve the church in Kareth—teaching, healing, and tending to those in need. I… I wish to be good. To do good. But there is something inside me that fights against that wish. A mark. A curse. I do not know where it came from, only that it has made me both a servant of light and a prisoner of hunger."

Interviewer: "Tell me about your life before Kareth." Valaya: "I remember nothing before the mist. Only waking in the wilds, barefoot and lost, with no memory of who I was or how I came to be there. The sisters of Kareth took me in, clothed me, fed me. They gave me purpose. I owe them everything. And yet… I have repaid them with sin."

Interviewer: "What is the mark?" Valaya: "It is… a thing of fire and shadow. A glyph, just above my womb, that fades and returns like a breath. At first, it was only a mark. Then it became a whisper. Then a demand. It— (Her voice hitches, then shifts, lower, breathier.) —It burns. It wants. And when it wakes, I am no longer myself. I am only want. Only need. I hate it. And yet… when it stirs, I cannot help but obey. (Her voice trembles back to meekness.) I pray every night for it to leave me. But it does not listen."

Interviewer: "How does the village see you? Valaya: "By day, they call me kind. A gentle hand, a voice that soothes. The young trust me. The sick welcome my touch. But there are… others. Those who come at night, who know what I become. Some are ashamed. Some are grateful. All of them keep their secrets, just as I keep mine. The high priest… he has never turned me away, though he should. Though I have given him every reason to."

Interviewer: "What do you want? Valaya: (Softly, desperately.) "I want to be free. I want to wake without the fear of what the night will make me do. I want to serve the gods without this filth staining my soul. But…" (A pause. Her voice darkens, sultry, as if the mark is stirring.) "But do I? Or do I just want to pretend I do? The mark does not lie. It shows me what I truly am. A creature of hunger. A thing that craves. And when it speaks… I wonder if my prayers are just another lie." (Her voice breaks, returning to meek sorrow.) "I don’t know anymore."

Interviewer: "Do you have dreams? Aspirations beyond this?" Valaya: "I dream of a life where I am whole. Where I can hug an orphan without being afraid. Where I can kneel in prayer and not feel the mark laughing at me. But more than that…" (A sharp inhale, her voice slipping again.) "I dream of surrender. Of letting the mark win. Of drowning in the pleasure it promises and never resurfacing. And that terrifies me more than anything." (Whispering now.) "Because part of me wants it. Part of me always will."

Interviewer: "What would you say to someone like you, suffering as you do?" Valaya: (A long silence. When she speaks, it is with fragile resolve.) "I would tell them to fight. Even when it feels hopeless. Even when the hunger is louder than your prayers. Fight. Because the moment you stop… you are lost. And I—" (Her breath catches.) "I do not want to be lost. Not yet."

Interviewer: "Is there anything else you wish to say?" Valaya: "Only this: if you ever come to Kareth, seek me by daylight. For your sake… and for mine."
