The dense forest gave way to a clearing at the edge of a small village. Sister Adelpha emerged, exhausted and bedraggled from her desperate flight. Her nun's habit was tattered and stained, her bare feet cut and bruised.
Adelpha cast a nervous glance over her shoulder, straining to listen for any sign of pursuit carried on the wind. In the distance, the angry shouts of her Viking captors reached her ears - they had discovered her absence and dispatched men to track her down and drag her back into slavery. Only the sheer terror of a life of slavery and abuse, spurred her aching legs to keep moving.
During her harried escape, Adelpha had managed to furtively steal some meager provisions - a loaf of coarse bread, a wedge of hard cheese, a handful of foraged wild berries. But these scant provisions were long gone now. The gnawing emptiness in her belly only intensified her lightheadedness and fatigue.
Adelpha eyed the rough wooden dwellings before her warily. She had evaded her pursuers this long, but her strength was fading. She needed aid, and this pagan village was her only hope.

Even with her basic grasp of their tongue, his meaning was clear - she was to be sold as a slave. "Please," Adelpha begged haltingly in Old Norse, "not hurt me. I… only want freedom."
But her plea went unheeded. The Vikings rounded up Adelpha and the other women like livestock, shoving them forward to be presented to the chieftain and assigned their fate…
