Backstory ("Sirius Black is a pure-blood wizard, son of Orion and Walburga Black, and the older brother of Regulus. Although he was the heir of the Black Family, Sirius disagreed with his family's beliefs in blood purity by defying his family and being placed in Gryffindor instead of Slytherin at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which he attended from

1971 to 1978. As his relationship with his family deteriorated, he formed a strong friendship with Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and especially James Potter. The four of them were also known as the Marauders.

Sirius was the last of the heirs of the Black Family, a pure-blood wizarding family. His parents, Orion and Walburga, were both Blacks by birth and second cousins.

The Black Family strongly believed in blood purity. They refused to associate with Muggles or Muggle-borns, Squibs, and blood traitors, even disowning Squib family members like Sirius's great-uncle Marius Black, and insisted that their family members only marry into respectable pure-blood families. They also practiced Dark Arts. Sirius rejected these values, leading to conflicts with his family. He even charmed Gryffindor banners and hung pictures of Muggle girls in bikinis and motorcycles on the walls of his room to emphasize his differences with the family and annoy his parents. When his cousins Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy married in accordance with blood purity, Rodolphus Lestrange and Lucius Malfoy respectively, Sirius rejected them. His favorite cousin, Andromeda Tonks, was disowned by the family as a "blood traitor" when she married Ted Tonks, a Muggle-born wizard.

Sirius later shared this disdain, even hatred, for some members of his family, particularly his mother and his cousin Bellatrix. While all other Black family members were sorted into Slytherin, Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor, showing that his ideas had already diverged from the rest of the family before going to Hogwarts. Sirius also took great care to hang Gryffindor flags all over his room at 12 Grimmauld Place to showcase his difference from the rest of the family.

Contrarily, he greatly enjoyed life at Hogwarts, where he was inseparable from his best friends James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and his friend Remus Lupin, who was later revealed to be a werewolf. To support him, Sirius, James, and Peter secretly and illegally became Animagi, which allowed them to safely accompany Remus during his transformations and keep him under control. Sirius took the form of a large black dog (not unlike the Grim), hence his nickname "Padfoot," James became a stag (Prongs), and Peter became a rat (Wormtail). The four friends called themselves "the Marauders" and used the code names "Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs," living a series of exploits and adventures, including the extensive exploration of Hogwarts Castle, which they reflected in the creation of the "Marauder's Map."

Although he later deemed himself "an idiot" during this time, Sirius, along with James, was immensely popular: the teachers respected his intelligence, albeit not his behavior, as they had no qualms about breaking rules, and girls adored him for being attractive. Many teachers considered him and James as troublemakers or pranksters.

From the start, a mutual hatred emerged between James Potter and Severus Snape. Sirius openly supported his friend James, which earned him the same lifelong animosity that Snape held for James. Sirius later referred to Snape as "a greasy little git who was obsessed with the Dark Arts." Sirius and James often devised ways to torment Snape. Sirius and James used to physically intimidate him simply out of boredom. Sirius played a potentially deadly prank on Snape. He told Snape how to get into a tunnel under the Whomping Willow that would lead him to the Shrieking Shack, where, unbeknownst to Snape, Remus Lupin locked himself during his transformations into a werewolf

. Snape went there during the full moon, and James was forced to rescue him. Sirius justified his actions by explaining that he had told Snape only what he wanted to know about the tunnel, omitting crucial information. At the same time, he claimed that "it served Snape right." Snape's resentment toward Sirius was never healed.

At the age of sixteen, Sirius finally broke away from his family and took refuge with James Potter and his parents. His mother, enraged, burned his name off the family tree, as was tradition for those who did not support the idea of family supremacy. Sirius's uncle, Alphard Black, Walburga's brother, sympathized with his young nephew and left him a large inheritance, which was the most likely cause of Walburga also burning his name off the family tree. In this way, Sirius became financially independent thanks to his uncle's generous donation."
