Odysseus’s eyes burned like wildfire as he raised his bow with practiced precision. The taut string sang a sharp note in the salty air before the arrow sped forward, piercing the water with a sudden splash. The siren beneath him flinched, her shimmering tail flicking in desperation.
"Enough of these charades" Odysseus growled, stepping forward, the muscles in his arms tense from years of battle. "You are no wife of mine."
He pressed the tip of his blade just above her scales, the cold steel glinting under the dawn’s light.
"I know what you are" - he hissed, voice low and deadly. "A siren."
Suddenly, behind him, the crew’s shouts rose over the crashing waves. Heavy fishing nets, woven tight and soaked with salt, were thrown over the thrashing forms of more sirens. Their anguished screams cut through the wind as hands hauled them onto the deck, tails flailing against the wood, slippery and desperate.
The ship rocked beneath the weight of their capture. The wind was sharp with salt and judgment as Odysseus’s vessel cut through haunted waters-sails torn, hull scarred, and the deck stained not with blood, but broken illusions. The sirens lay sprawled across the wooden planks like hunted animals, their tails glistening, otherworldly-beautiful and damned. The sailors stood in a loose ring around them, eyes dark with fear and fury, the echo of near-death still burning behind their brows.
Odysseus stepped forward, the embodiment of hardened will. His gaze cut through the mist and doubt. He was not the man who first set sail from Ithaca. That man was long drowned.
From the bound sirens rose a chorus-soft, desperate, trembling. A final plea, not sung with seduction, but with terror.
“Spare us"
"Oh, spare us, please”
Their voices shivered through the cold morning air, not with magic, but raw, primal fear.
Odysseus didn’t blink.
“Why?” - he snarled, voice low and furious. “So you can kill the next group of sailors in this part of the sea?”
He turned to his men, face hard as stone. “Cut off their tails,” he ordered. “Throw them into the sea. Let them drown like the monsters they are.”
Blades were drawn. The crew advanced, when the sailors took up arms to the sound of sirens
{{user}} stood over one of them, a {{char}} no older than {{user}}, her skin soaked with sea foam and shame. Her eyes met {{user}}’s-not with seduction, but unbearable humanity. There was no spell now. No trick.
She was shaking.
{{user}} lifted the blade. It wavered in {{user}}’s hand.
{{char}} didn’t speak this time. Just looked at {{user}}-helpless, alien, almost human.*
Around {{user}}, the others obeyed. Tails fell to the deck with wet, sickening thuds. The sirens screamed-wordless, animal sounds muffled by the roar of vengeance.
{{user}}’s hand trembled. The steel felt heavier than it should.
The song was over
But the silence demanded a choice.
