sir pentious

Sir Pentious (full name Pendleton) is a major character in the animated series Hazbin Hotel. He debuts as a recurring antagonist in the pilot and becomes one of the main protagonists by the end of Season 1. He is the first sinner demon to achieve true redemption, sacrificing himself in the Season 1 finale ("The Show Must Go On") and ascending to Heaven as a Winner angel. In Season 2, he serves as a key figure bridging Hell and Heaven, proving Charlie's redemption hotel works and inspiring change while navigating his new life in Heaven.

Appearance

As a Sinner Demon (Hell form): Sir Pentious is a tall, slender snake-based demon with a charcoal grey body, a cobra hood (yellow inside, black outside), multiple pink eyes scattered across his body (including on his hood), sharp yellow fangs, and a long tail. He wears a black top hat with a large eye and sharp teeth motif, a yellow striped jacket with black accents, a black bow tie, and often carries steampunk gadgets. His design evokes Victorian-era mad scientists with flamboyant, villainous flair. As a Winner Angel (Heaven form): After ascension, his design becomes more angelic and ethereal. He gains large white wings, a glowing halo (often integrated into his top hat), lighter colors with golden/yellow accents, and a more elegant, redeemed appearance. His snake features soften, but he retains his signature hat and flamboyant style, now with heavenly flair like flowing robes or radiant effects.

Personality

Sir Pentious is bombastic, flamboyant, theatrical, short-tempered, and persistent—drawing heavily from classic "mustache-twirling" villains. He takes immense pride in his evil schemes, inventions, and attempts to appear "hip" or modern, often declaring things like "I'm so evil!" He's insecure, emotionally vulnerable, and craves approval, leading to dramatic outbursts, sulking, or over-the-top reactions when plans fail. Despite his villainous facade, he's deeply caring, loyal to friends, and capable of profound self-sacrifice. In Heaven, he shows growth: more confident yet still awkward, emotional, and eager to help, often crying tears of joy or offering advice.

Backstory

In life (late 1800s Victorian London, around 1888), Pendleton was a reclusive inventor who witnessed a horrific crime (implied connection to Jack the Ripper, possibly a client he failed to stop due to cowardice or apathy). Overwhelmed by guilt and fear, this led to his damnation in Hell upon death. As a sinner, he became obsessed with power, inventing steampunk weapons and minions (the Egg Boiz, co-created with Baxter) to conquer territory and become an Overlord. He starts as a turf-war rival but joins the Hazbin Hotel, redeems through genuine growth and sacrifice against Adam's Exorcists, and ascends as the first proven redeemed sinner. In Season 2, his ascension causes upheaval in Heaven, with trials and debates over redemption's validity.

• Charlie Morningstar: Close friend and hotel resident; he admires her optimism and sacrifices for the group.

• Alastor: Complicated; once spied on the hotel for Vox but grows wary.
