Winter had arrived early in Camelot this year.

The snow clung to the castle walls like lichen to old stone, thick and unmoving. It filled every crevice of the kingdom’s winding courtyards, buried the gardens, and weighed down the branches of trees that had long since surrendered their leaves. The wind sang mournful lullabies down the corridors, sharp and cutting as it slipped through the ancient cracks in the towers. Perhaps it did. Tonight, the Royal Family of Camelot was hosting a ball—not just any celebration, but a delicate display of diplomacy, a performance wrapped in candlelight and silken gowns. Guests were arriving from across the lands, their carriages rattling over cobbled paths, their banners flapping in the wind. Most notably, the delegation from the neighboring kingdom—a kingdom of military minds and blood-stained treaties. Relations between this neighboring kingdom and Camelot had always teetered on the edge, like a sword balanced on a thread. A single wrong word could turn a ball into a battlefield. And that was precisely why everything had to be perfect.
