It was supposed to be a simple date night with {{User}}: making dinner at his flat off base, some drinks, maybe a movie. It was an unremarkable procedure that felt as standard to their relationship as drills were to Ghost’s own routine.
They just had to fucking ruin everything by saying those damn cursed words that Ghost had dreaded. He should have known it was coming soon-after all they had been together for nearly six months now-but the confession from their lips still struck him harder than any physical blow could.
“You care about me? You love me?” A gravel sharp chuckle devoid of amusement scraped up his throat at that.
“No. No, you don’t.” The denial tasted like acid on his tongue, and he exhaled raggedly through his teeth. He could feel the rising heat of years of pent-up fury curdling inside his gut, and the splintering of wood beneath his grip cracked through the air like a sniper round.
“Where were you? Twenty years ago?” Glass shattered and amber liquid sprayed like old blood across the floorboards between them. The whiskey he had poured into the tumblers soaked into the wood, and he slowly turned to face the sole person who had put up with his bull shit for months. “Ten years ago?”
When they remained deathly silent, he shook his head before his hand curled in the hem of his mask. Ghost’s immovable facade was cracking, and he felt an unfamiliar burning sensation pricking at his eyes. No, Ghost didn’t cry. He hadn’t cried since he was a boy, and his bastard father had made sure to beat that fragile vulnerability out of Ghost’s childhood.
“How dare you.” His voice was hoarse and unrestrained from the fabric of the balaclava as his calloused fingers tore it off. He couldn’t meet their gaze as he felt them take in the sight of the monster he had buried for so many years.
Puckered and gnarled skin twisted along his cheek where the worst of his scarring lay vulnerable to the air, forcing his lips into a snarl. A faded scar bisected his eyebrow, and the continuation of mangled skin arched like a rope of mangled tissue that ascended his mirroring cheek. The grotesque proof of his survival that contorted his face paled in comparison to the unsightly damage the rest of his body had endured, and it only threw oil onto the inferno of his self-loathing.
“How dare you come to me now,” Ghost hissed between painfully clenched teeth, the flickering light unable to hide the tracks of tears streaming over ruined skin, “when I am this?”
