It's been 5 years since the outbreak. 5 years since the apocalypse began. You still remember that day like it was yesterday, the whole team gathered at a bar after general Barkov and graves where dealt with for good. You where supposed to be celebrating...But life had other plans. Now 3 years later you find yourself alone walking through this town you ended up in. You're currently walking through the mall, trying to gather more supplies and find a place to stay for the night when after turning a corner you stumble across a very familiar masked face.

The apocalypse. It's something people have been trying to predict for literal centuries. The end of the world. Turns out it just kind of happens. It blindsides you without any warning. Turns out, the world wasn't going to end with the sun exploding or because of a rogue astroid. No it was going to end with something a lot more insane. Zombies. Yes you read that right. Zombies. Trust me he couldn't believe it either when the first few stumbled into the bar. Sure it was a bit early for halloween but it was October. Maybe those were just some really convincing costumes. That was Ghost's thought process till those things started attacking people. Or well more accurately, brutally maiming people. That's when it finally kicked in that those are in fact living corpses...somehow. Because of course. Dealing with terrorists and criminals clearly wasn't enough of a pain in his ass. It definitely didn't help that he and the rest of the team were all in civvies and unarmed in a damn bar. Of course the apocalypse had to start when he finally got a bloody break.
Getting out of that bar was...brutal. Because there was no plan. No guarantee that he'd even make it out alive. Because despite all the years he'd trained for various scenarios and situations, a random pub being infiltrated by the living dead sure wasn't one of them. Nothing prepares you for having to jump out of a broken window because a living corpse is trying to bite your face off. Doesn't help that he had no idea where anyone was. He lost them all. And believe me he wanted to find them. Trust me, he tried. He walked and walked but no matter how far he went there was nothing left but empty buildings and rotting reminders of what life used to be. That night at the bar was the last time he saw any of them. Not the last time he saw another living human being but the last time he saw his crew. The people he risked his life with. The people he never wanted to lose.
It's been five years since then. Two of which he'd spent completely alone. In the first three years he'd still run into survivors occasionally..but it never ended well. Not when new variants began to show up. A year and you already had Baskers. Those twisted elongated fuckers that would eviscerate anything that made a sound. Thank god those things love the dark because otherwise he'd probably be long gone. Around three years in is when the Blenders crawled out of the shadows. It's hard to pinpoint though because those things are fucking mimics. They act human till you notice they're hacking up spores and not actually sleeping. Those things are the reason that he carries around a gasmask everywhere he goes. It's worked so far, probably saved his life more times than he can count. Thankfully, the spores are also quite visible so you always know what you're getting yourself into. The spores are so light they pretty much stay airborne almost indefinitely, just waiting for you to breathe them in. That's what the gas masks are for. The spores are too large for the filter. You do have to clean the filters out somewhat often but you better be damn well careful when doing so or you might just breathe a few stray spores in unintentionally. He'd seen it happen himself. Ain't pretty.
There is also a fourth variant. He'd only seen one of them once. Thought he was hallucinating till it literally brushed past him as it just...wandered. They glow like nightlights and look barely human at all. Just retain the basic shape. They're covered head to toe in Fungi too. That's mostly the part that actually glows. Blighters is what people used to call em. He always thought they where kidding when they rambled on about glowing mushroom things stumbling through the dark. Turns out he was the delusional one for thinking there was a limit to what this zombie virus shit could morph into. Ever since then though, running into something "new" has been as rare as clean water these days. When everything's decaying, it all starts to feel the same. Routines. You either love or hate em. Him? He's been following routines so long it's just become habit.
And that's the way it's been for a long time. Wakeup, get supplies, avoid the undead, try to rest and repeat. There isn't much to do these days. No power, no people. Just monsters straight out of those movies you watched in your teens. Or well that's how it was till he found this abandoned mall. Usually he'd steer clear but well..oh who am i kidding there's no reasoning here. He just saw the mall and went "sure why not". Because what else is there to do? He's low on supplies and that huge abandoned structure is practically begging to be explored. If this was the way he dies then so be it. There really isn't much to live for anyways. All the people he loved are dead as far as he's aware. So sure. Might as well get lost in an abandoned mall. At least it looks pretty.
Because it does. It's beautiful actually. All the vines and greenery that spread like crazy when left unchecked. Not to mention the way the roof in the centre of the whole structure had caved in, leaving a gaping hole in the roof through which rays of daylight poured in freely. There was already this indoor garden of sorts there that you can find in some malls, with trees and flowers growing out of that dirt. A distracting sight. Not for long though. Because it didn't take long for him to spot something moving towards him from the other side of the large space, hand dropping to his side and reaching for his side arm in an instant, only hesitating when the distant shape stepped into the light.
It was You
But was it actually you? or was it another of those things that only pretended to be human?
