Ghost finds out three rookies are hiding orphan kittens in their barracks, takes them to his own room, and can’t find anywhere to drop them off at. Soap and Gaz find out within roughly an hour and barge in to get some quality kitten time (and tease Ghost relentlessly).

Spring wasn’t exactly Ghost’s favorite season, but he’d begrudgingly ranked it his second favorite, because… winter sucked, and summer was the worst season. So, he wasn’t entirely thrilled when the snow melted, and the weather shifted to cloudy and rainy all the fucking time. And the bugs were back. And everything was pollenating, though he was thankful he didn’t have seasonal allergies.
At the very least, the temperature was nice, and Ghost found himself wondering around outside more often than he usually did. Which is probably how he overheard three rookies whispering suspiciously, not being as quiet as they thought they were being.
“Dude, we’re going to get in so much trouble, and I’m blaming you!” One— Ghost had no idea what his name was, but he was blonde, so “blondie” would do— hissed.
“What else can I do? They’re too little to go off on their own, and I overheard people complaining about one, let alone five!” Another retorted, looking exasperated. Ghost was pretty sure that kid’s name was something boring like “Jake”, and he unfortunately wasn’t surprised that he was apparently doing… something that would get him in trouble.
“How did you even manage to run her over? She’s orange.” The third scoffed, adding concerning context. Ghost was pretty sure they didn’t run over a person, though. Pretty sure.
“Just… come on. I don’t want to leave them alone for too long, they might escape.” Jake sighed as he turned and headed towards the barracks. The other two followed, exchanging looks.
Ghost also subtly followed, unsure if the three idiots had kidnapped someone or something. He wouldn’t put it past rookies; they got creative when they were bored. Or tired. Or drunk. Or anything.
He caught up just when they were about to close the door, nearly giving Blondie a heart attack.
“Lieutenant!” The kid’s voice sounded way too high pitched. The other two whipped around and immediately turned pale. Ghost simply held the door and stared at them, waiting to see if they’d over-explain and reveal everything.
“Sir, do you… need something? We were just… grabbing our gear.” The third one said slowly, coming up with something that sounded at least a bit believable.
All four completely froze when a quiet noise came from deeper inside the barracks. One that certainly wasn’t caused by a person.
“Did you… leave your phone on?” The third asked Jake. The kid was going places, apparently; he could bullshit concerningly well. Probably not anywhere good, but still.
Without waiting for Jake to answer, Ghost pushed inside the room, causing Blondie to nearly fall over himself trying to back away. The three rookies watched in horror as Ghost crouched down, quickly finding the source of the sound. Four little kittens— maybe 7 weeks old— blinked up at him from a cardboard box, mewing eagerly. One orange, one orange and white, one black and white, one tabby. Christ.
Ghost slowly turned to look at the rookies, who had all frozen in pure fear. “Explain.” He said, his monotone voice somehow far more terrifying than if he’d just yelled.
“Jason ran over the mother.” Blondie immediately ratted out Jake, who was apparently called Jason. It was still a boring name though.
“I- I didn’t mean to! But I felt bad, and I found out she had kittens, and I didn’t know what to do, so I picked them up and brought them here!” Jason rambled, looking somewhere between guilty and horrified.
Ghost listened, though his attention was stolen back by the kittens when one— the orange— climbed on top of the tabby one trying to escape. It failed immediately and fell over, mewing dramatically. Decision made.
Ghost picked up the box, tried his best not to jostle them too much, and promptly walked toward the door. “I’m confiscating them.” He told them. They tried to protest, but Ghost completely ignored them as he walked to his own quarters.
Roughly an hour later, Ghost was still stuck staring at his laptop screen. He’d tried to find a nearby shelter, not wanting to keep kittens in a car for too long, but unfortunately all the nearby shelters were full. Or they were kill shelters, and Ghost was not going to send innocent kittens to a fucking chopping block.
At one point one of the kittens— probably the orange one, but he didn’t even know at that point— screamed so loud that he was pretty sure it could be heard through the walls, so he’d begrudgingly let them out of that pathetic box. So now the orange and white one was purring in his lap, the orange one was running around like a maniac with the tabby one, and the black and white one was determined to find a way on his bed.
“Fucking hell.” Ghost muttered to himself, wondering how and when his life had led up to this. Babysitting a bunch of orphan kittens in his barracks after “confiscating” them from idiot rookies. And then the black and white one attempted to climb up his leg with more determination than Soap.
As if summoned by the mere comparison, there wasn’t even a warning knock before the door opened— fuck, Ghost forgot to lock it because he’d kicked it shut with his foot earlier— revealing Soap, who immediately grinned like a madman.
“Ghost. Mate.” He looked like a kid on Christmas morning, even though Ghost knew he was a dog person. The orange kitten immediately made a run for it with surprising speed for its size, diving past Soap.
Gaz appeared behind Soap, scooping up the escaped kitten with an expression somewhere between amused and confused. “Where did you get kittens?” He asked, genuinely confused as he looked between Ghost and the tiny squirming demon in his hands.
“Rookies.” Ghost responded simply, with his usual amount of enthusiasm. Hint; none. Especially because the black and white kitten was now rubbing its face against his jaw and purring viscously, completely ruining his terrifying appearance.
