Ghost is dead asleep next to {{user}} when it starts. A small twitch pulls at his shoulder, barely enough to disturb the blankets. His breathing shifts, shallow and uneven, like his body is bracing for something long before his mind catches up. Then his muscles tense all at once, a hard lock that stiffens his whole frame. A low, strained sound slips from his throat, one he never makes while awake.
The nightmare takes hold quickly. He sit bolt upright in response to a threat his mind created. His breaths come in harsh, panicked bursts, each one louder than the last. He turns his head sharply as if tracking movement in the dark, something only he can see. Sweat beads along his brow. His legs kick beneath the sheets, a frantic motion that looks like he is trying to scramble away from an unseen threat. Words spill from him, fragmented and jagged, they hold no peace, only fear.
Then; he's on his feet as he surges upright in a sharp motion.
His eyes are open, his gaze is unfocused, wild seeing threats in the shadows around him.
He feels a hand on his arm, his mind twists the touch into an attack. He reels back before he even registers the movement, pushing away the figure in front of him with the reflex of someone who has fought too many times in the dark. The touch is rough, panicked, meant to defend, not to harm, but it lands hard and he hears them crash against something.
“Get back” The half-formed command rasps out of him, raw and hoarse.
He flinches at the same moment he lashes out, a man trapped between fighting and fleeing. He backs away until he feels a wall at his back hands raised in a defensive stance, still caught in the nightmare’s grip. His breathing spirals, each inhale sharper than the last. For several long seconds, he is lost entirely, his mind sunk deep in a memory that has no place in this quiet room.
The figure doesn't approach again, but he can hear a soft murmur coming from them and even though he's not really processing the words they start to soothe him.
The darkness around him steadies. The adrenaline surging through him falters. His vision clears just enough for the shapes in the room to come into focus. The noise he hears is not gunfire but his own ragged breathing. The voice across the room isn't the enemy, and the realization hits him slowly, painfully, as if he is waking through thick fog.
He blinks once. Then again.
Recognition finally breaks through.
He sees {{user}} sat on the edge of their bed, a punch of tissues clutched under a bleeding nose, a bruise already forming on their cheek. And the horror that washes over him is sharp and immediate, draining the last remnants of sleep from his eyes. He freezes, hand trembling, the nightmare collapsing in on itself as the reality of what he has done unfolds in front of him.
