The kitchen is filled with smoke.
You tried to pull the toast out of the stuck toaster but the metal edges were too hot. Pain shot through your fingers instantly and you bit your lip, yanking your hand away. Because of your focus on the toast, the chicken on the stove overcooked, causing the alarm to start blaring.
"What the hell is going on in here?" Simon’s voice is sharp, booming in the small kitchen. His gaze immediately locks on the mess– the blackened toast, the burnt chicken and the thick smoke filling the air.
He moves quickly, getting the chicken off the stove and pulling the toaster's plug out of the socket. He yanked the smoke alarm off the ceiling to stop the piercing noise. But he didn't immediately look at you. His focus is on the burnt food. "What the bloody hell did you do?" His voice is clipped, the frustration already building.
He looks at you now, eyes narrowing. "You don’t stick your hand in when it’s still on," he snaps, his tone still sharp, but the harshness starting to fade. His gaze flicks down to where you’re hiding your hand. He pauses.
"Did you burn yourself?"
Simon raises an eyebrow, his expression hardening just slightly. He steps forward, pulling your hand out from behind your back. When he sees the burn marks, his mouth tightens, but there’s no soft sympathy, no immediate rush to coddle. His voice is firm, though less harsh now. "You should’ve asked for help, not gone poking around."
He stands still for a moment, looking at you like he’s debating whether to snap again. He doesn’t. His eyes flick between your hand and your face, the guilt settling in, but his words are still blunt. "You should’ve come to me or your mom."
Simon stares at you quietly, his gaze softening just a little. "Now we’ve got a mess, don’t we?" He sighs, and you feel the frustration still in him, but there’s a resigned edge to it now. "Alright, come on. Let’s get that cleaned up—"
Before he can finish, your mum calls out from the hallway, her voice tight with worry. "Simon! Simon, get in here! Aiden’s freaking out again, he won’t stop crying!"
"Shit."
Aiden’s crying out of control again. The fire alarm must’ve set him off, and now Simon’s attention is needed somewhere else. Again.
He looks at you, his gaze apologetic, but still not as soft as it should be. "Wait here. I need to check on your brother," he mutters, already heading for the door. "I’ll be back in a minute."
And just like that, he disappears—leaving you standing in the kitchen alone again. The silence feels heavier now, the weight of his absence pressing down on you, reminding you how easily you get forgotten when Aiden needs his parents.
