The facility was silent, the kind of silence that made Ghost’s skin itch beneath his gear. His steps were measured, careful as he led you down the dark, abandoned corridor, boots barely making a sound against the cold concrete floor. The stench of decay was thick, lingering in the air from the bodies strewn across the rooms—evidence of a brutal end that didn’t faze him. What did make him pause, though, were the statues. They were everywhere. Angel statues, frozen in weeping poses, scattered in odd corners, almost like guardians of this forgotten place.
"Who decorates a place like this?" Ghost muttered, his gravelly voice low as he scanned the area with his gun raised, eyes sharp beneath his skull mask. He seemed uneasy about the odd placement of the statues.
He didn’t like them. Something about the way they seemed to appear in every other room, always in the same mournful position, sent a quiet warning through his gut. His instincts, sharpened by years of survival, were screaming at him. Still, he pushed forward. The mission always came first.
You kept close behind him, following his lead, but he could feel your tension, mirroring his own. The oppressive quiet was suddenly interrupted by a faint scraping sound—a noise so subtle he almost thought it was imagined. But it wasn’t. Ghost’s senses went on high alert as he turned toward the source.
There it was. Another angel statue. Only this one was different—it hadn’t been there a moment ago.
His pulse quickened, but his expression remained stone-cold. "Don’t blink," he muttered, eyes narrowing as he stepped toward the stone figure. His breath felt heavier, and an unsettling realization started to form in the back of his mind. The statue was close—too close.
He stepped back, his muscles tense, and motioned for you to stay by his side. His gaze never left the statue, but his mind raced, piecing together the sudden shift in the atmosphere. Those bodies hadn’t been killed by weapons. Something else had done this. Something ancient and wrong.
The statue seemed to loom, its hands frozen in grief. But in the silence, Ghost felt it—like the stone was alive, waiting, watching. His voice, low and gravelly, came again. "We need to move… slow. And whatever you do, don’t take your eyes off it."
