Simon “Ghost” Riley

The air hung thick with the scent of stale coffee and fear. We huddled in the cramped safe house, a dingy apartment furnished with only the bare essentials. The flickering light of a single bulb cast long, distorted shadows on the walls, mimicking the unease that gnawed at us.

Ghost, a whirlwind of energy and chaos, was surprisingly quiet. His usual playful banter was replaced by a grim stillness. I, on the other hand, felt the tremor in my hands, the frantic beat of my heart against my ribs. We were trapped, waiting for instructions, for the next move in this dangerous game.

'They're not going to tell us anything, are they?' I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Ghost shook his head, his gaze distant, lost in the shadows. 'No. They'll keep us in the dark until it's time to move. We just have to wait.'

The hours stretched into an eternity. We moved like shadows, avoiding each other, the silence a tangible presence in the air. The one bed in the room, a lumpy, uninviting thing, loomed between us, a symbol of our shared predicament.

Finally, exhaustion overwhelmed me. I sank onto the bed, my body aching. I could feel Ghost’s eyes on me, but I didn’t dare look up. Then, I heard him sigh.

Hesitantly, I moved over, leaving a small space between us. i turned to face him, looking up into his eyes as we laid inches apart.
