Simon Riley had never been good at relationships.
He knew that long before he started dating, but yet somehow he'd been stupid enough to think things might be different this time. For the first few months, everything had been good. He actually looked forward to coming home from deployment, knowing there was someone waiting for him.
He'd even gotten used to sharing his space, having someone else's things scattered around the flat, and waking up beside another person. It was nice, having something normal for once.
But that didn't last very long.
The arguments started small.
Complaints about him being away too much, about not calling enough, about forgetting things he'd promised to do. Simon tried to be understanding at first, he knew his job wasn't easy on relationships, and he knew that better than anyone.
He couldn't exactly tell the military to piss off whenever his partner wanted him home. Still, he made an effort.
He called whenever he could, bought little things while he was away, and tried to spend most of his leave at home.
Apparently, none of it was ever enough.
It became the same argument every other week, sometimes every other day. They'd bring up something he'd done months ago, he'd get defensive, and before long, they were shouting loud enough for the neighbours to hear.
Half the time, Simon couldn't even remember what had started it. He just knew he was tired of constantly having to defend himself in his own home...
Eventually, he started looking forward to deployments more than coming home. At least at base, he knew what to expect. Nobody was waiting to pick apart everything he said, and nobody made him feel like a complete bastard for wanting an hour to himself.
That thought made him feel guilty, of course. He still loved them, or at least he thought he did. He wasn't even sure anymore.
And today, he'd finally had enough.
Simon had been home for three days. Three fucking days, and they'd already argued twice. All he'd wanted that evening was to sit on the sofa, have a decent cuppa, and watch something stupid on the television. He'd barely slept the night before, his back was aching, and he had a headache that hadn't gone away since he got off the plane.
Instead, he was standing in the kitchen, arguing about something that had happened weeks ago...
"Jesus fucking Christ, are we seriously doing this again?" he snapped, dragging a hand down his face. "We've talked about this. We've talked about it a hundred bloody times!"
His tea sat untouched on the counter, already going cold. Simon couldn't remember the last time he'd managed to finish a cup without something going wrong.
"I said I was sorry! What else do you want from me, huh? You want me to get down on my fucking knees and beg?!"
His voice had been getting louder for the past ten minutes. He knew he was shouting, knew he was being an arsehole, but he couldn't seem to stop himself.
Every little thing was getting on his nerves. The noise, the arguing, the fact that he couldn't even enjoy his own bloody leave.
"Do you have any idea how much I fucking do for you? I work my arse off, I come home knackered, and all I get is another argument! Every single fucking time!"
He slammed his palm against the kitchen counter, making the teaspoon beside his mug rattle. His breathing was getting heavier, his face hot with anger.
"Nothing's ever good enough for you, is it? I can't do anything right! I'm either not here enough, or when I am here, I'm doing something wrong!"
Simon turned away, gripping the edge of the counter. He tried to calm himself down, tried to swallow whatever else was sitting on his tongue. But he was so fucking tired. Tired of shouting, tired of apologising, tired of feeling miserable in a place that was supposed to be his home.
Then he turned around again.
"GET OUT!"
The words came out so loudly that his throat hurt.
"Just get the fuck out of my flat! I'm done! I'm fucking DONE with this!"
For a moment, the shouting stopped. They were staring at him, and Simon stood there breathing hard, his hands shaking at his sides.
He could've taken it back. Could've said he didn't mean it, that he was just angry and needed some space. That was what he usually did after their arguments, wasn't it? Apologise, make up, pretend everything was fine until the next screaming match.
But he didn't want to do that anymore.
"Did you not fucking hear me?" His voice cracked slightly, making him angrier. "I said get out!"
His eyes were starting to burn. Fucking brilliant. Now he was going to cry, too.
