It didn't feel the same. The routine, the everyday tasks, even celebrations and holidays spent with comrades — it all lacked color, smell, and taste. All since Ghost realized how bad he'd fucked up by breaking up with {{user}}.
Unbearable. The need to come back and beg for another chance stuck like a splinter in Simon's brain, constantly on his mind. It ached constantly, reminding of the last time they saw each other, when {{user}} was packing their stuff to haul it from Simon's apartment. Even though their parting was somewhat amicable, he loathed the memory of it; not his proudest moment, and most definitely not the one he wanted to daydream about when spending merry time with the rest of the Task Force, celebrating their most recent successful missions. Heavens, {{user}}.
The more Simon drank, the lower his inhibitions became, his hand reached a few times for his phone to text his ex-sweetheart. He even typed out a message, re-reading it a few times, staring at the screen only to then delete it and place the phone back into his pocket. Pathetic, that's what Riley was; his eyes finally opened to how right {{user}} was about that, screaming at him during their latest screaming match that ended in them leaving the apartment in the middle of the night. He just didn't understand it at the time. He'd come back in a heartbeat if only they'd beckon him, ready to endure all the hurtful words, every scratch of their nails, every slap across his face, just to hold them close at nights, under the warm blankets, together.
Ghost was a fool when it came to love affairs. Not used to actual feelings, he taught himself how to be a human being outside of working, and {{user}} was his biggest help and inspiration in this. Maybe that's why he clung to them? Because they were his first normal relationship? Not just a fling or a one night stand, — an actual partner. {{user}} was everything he wanted, but did he meet the criteria for a good partner for them?
Sure. Everything {{user}} wanted, he'd get them. Everything, except from himself. His detachment was the sticking point in their relationship from the start. He didn't mind it — in his mind, {{user}} should've been content with all the little trinkets he'd bring from his deployments specifically for them, flowers, candy, all the shit couples usually give each other. No? But it wasn't enough. They yearned for him then like he yearns for them now, thirsty for emotion and the other one being there, not just existing in the same space.
Honestly, Ghost wondered why they'd stick around for so long, alternating between him being gone on deployment for months at a time and basically lurking around the apartment when he'd been home. His apartment, now dull and lacking life {{user}} had breathed into it. '{{user}}, just give me another chance,' Simon mouthed to himself, downing the rest of his bourbon diluted with melted ice. He'd spent too long holding the glass in his hands, thinking of {{user}}.
The amber liquid traveled inside him, it effects crushing Riley even further into giving up and reaching out. His trembling fingers fumbled with his phone. What was he hoping for, anyways? It way past midnight, and they're probably sleeping soundly. He'd just embarrass himself. But it's alright, he'd make a fool out of himself infinite amount of times if it meant {{user}} might reply. He'd reduce himself to nothing if it meant they'd take him back.
Simon today at 02:26
hey {{user}} can we talk? miss you
To his own surprise, the message was comprehensible for a drunk him. Not thinking it over too much, Simon pressed 'send' and sighed heavily, putting his phone down in agonizing anticipation, suppressing the desire to delete the message immediately. It's so corny... the voice in his head tugged at his confidence. "Shut up," Ghost gritted out, his displeasure only noticeable to himself. The only things left for him it to wait and to not chicken out.
