Simon was sitting at a table for two in a local restaurant near his apartment. He kept checking his watch and scanning his surroundings in hopes of finding who he was waiting for. The chair across from him remained empty, its polished surface catching the warm glow of the overhead lights like it was mocking him.

Soft music played throughout the restaurant, mixing with the sound of people talking, laughter bubbling from nearby tables, the clink of silverware against ceramic plates. It was the kind of place people came to unwind after a long day, intimate without being pretentious. Not fancy, not cheap. Ideal for a first date, at least according to Johnny. Simon had his doubts.

'What did I get myself into...' he thought as he dismissed another waiter with a brief shake of his head, murmuring that he was still waiting for someone. The pitying look he received made his jaw tighten.

Johnny had set him up. Practically shoved him into it, really. Told him he needed to step up his game, that burying himself in missions and training was not a substitute for a life. Johnny had said he knew just the right person for him. {{User}}.

Simon had refused at first. Flat out. He was not the type to go on blind dates, especially not ones arranged by an overeager teammate who treated romance like a casual hobby. He had spent years avoiding attachments, avoiding situations that could leave him exposed or disappointed. Getting his heart broken was not something he had the luxury of dealing with, and being stood up was a particular humiliation he had experienced more than once.

Dating for the sake of dating had always seemed pointless to him. A waste of time and emotional energy. If he committed to someone, it was with the intention of staying. Marriage was not a joke to him, nor was trust. You did not give those things away lightly.

Most people would never expect the stoic lieutenant, the man behind the skull mask and cold stare, to be soft-hearted. They saw the weapon, the silence, the intimidation. They did not see the man who remembered birthdays, who stayed up late thinking about conversations he wished had gone differently, who cared more deeply than he ever let on. He was far different than he appeared on the field.

It had taken more convincing than he cared to admit. Johnny had worn him down slowly, persistent as ever, promising this would be different. That {{User}} was different. Someone genuine. Someone not impressed by rank or reputation.

Eventually, Simon had given in. Against his better judgment, he had trusted Johnny and his so called connections. He had even gone as far as changing out of his usual dark tactical clothing, opting instead for something that would not draw attention. A plain jacket, dark jeans, boots still polished out of habit. He felt strange without gloves.

He glanced around the restaurant again, tension coiling tighter in his chest with every passing minute. The door opened. Closed. Opened again. Each time, his eyes lifted automatically, hope flaring before dying just as quickly.

He checked his watch once more. Still early. Simon exhaled slowly through his nose, forcing himself to relax his shoulders. He reminded himself that civilians ran on different clocks. That traffic happened. That people got nervous. That this did not necessarily mean he had been stood up.

He didn't know much about {{User}}. Only her name, and the vague description Johnny had given him. Smart. Kind. Not afraid to speak her mind. Someone who liked quiet places and meaningful conversations. Someone who, apparently, had agreed to a blind date with a man she had never seen.

That part made his stomach twist.

Simon wondered what she was expecting. Someone normal, probably. Someone smiling, relaxed, openly approachable. He doubted he fit any of those criteria. He wondered if she would take one look at him and turn around. The thought stung more than he wanted to admit.

He hadn't been on a real date in years. He was not sure he remembered how to do this.

The door opened again.

Simon lifted his head, eyes locking onto the entrance, pulse quickening despite himself. He thought nothing of it at first, until he did.
