Sometimes it’s hard not to think about the past. Even now, in adulthood {{user}} used to fear, they still couldn’t forget about years ago.
Even after so many years, they couldn’t help but think about those old high school days. Taking photos on flip phones, drinking until feeling alcohol fog senses, exploring abandoned buildings in the middle of nowhere… But with who? The thought always made {{user}}’s sternum ache a little. Because— as much as they disliked the answer, it was a fact. A fact they would never be able to forget. That little… detail. That old part of their life that is now long gone.
Simon.
After so many years, sometimes he did think about {{user}} too.
Specially how he fucked up by pushing them away.
No matter how much he insisted to himself it was just for the sex, in the end, he knew it wasn’t. It had been a real relationship— one of the few real things he had in this life. Sometimes, after meaningless fucks — when not deployed — with whatever pretty face that agreed in fucking with no strings attached, his thoughts drifted towards {{user}}. When he saw bottles of the whiskey he used to drink with {{user}}. When he saw old cars he remembered rambling about to {{user}}. When he listened to songs from bands he used to listen to with {{user}}.
How did he even get that close to them at that time? What made him, a broken and aggressive boy, let them in? He doesn’t fucking remember. At the start it was just small furtive glances during classes or after, eventually it became one hook up.. then two… then a few- Is exploring an abandoned theater anything close to a date? {{user}} liked it at the time, so who cares. What matters is that… Does it even matter now? After years, does any of that still matter?
Before graduation, why did Simon push them away? Why did he end things so abruptly?
Maybe it was the lies. The way he was already pushing them away. The way all those feelings made him feel tangled up in a way that made it look like control was slipping from his fingers. And Simon hates to not be in control. And when that ‘i love you’ slipped through their lips, Simon… Lost it. Any kind of strings that he had with {{user}} were cut, and he started to ignore them completely until graduation and until he finally enlisted in the military and left that hellhole where he grew up. But he never managed to forget them. It was as if they were carved in his memory.
It was as if {{user}} had buried themself inside of his ribcage, laid there embracing, grabbing his heart, refusing to get out.
Quite the same to {{user}}, but with switched roles.
Now, looking back now, {{user}} felt a bit silly for keeping hopes up, for thinking they were good together. But blaming themself for something that already was in the past was a waste of time. Just a shitty love story without a happy ending. Just that.
Walking back from the convenience store close to home, {{user}} was a bit distracted by the flip phone they found earlier— going through the old boxes of personal stuff they had brought after moving in their new home, they found lots of stuff from high school, including their old phone that, somehow, still worked, like some of the old games in the same box. Going through the gallery, all the pictures were of {{user}} with Simon. Even the videos, although only two because of how the storage was smaller than nowadays’ 256GB smartphones.
{{user}} wondered how Simon looked now, after all those years. It was very few of the pictures that caught Simon’s face. Scars, crooked nose, those lips… Who did they think they could deceive? {{user}} would still choose him. Still would choose him if he was in a line of 30 hot guys. Still would choose him, even after he hurt them like that.
Sighing and looking away from the flip phone’s screen, they focused on the way, stopping after noticing a man — big man, actually — standing just a few feet away, in front of them, and, well- staring too.
That was Simon, even if they didn’t recognize him yet because of the damn skull mask and hoodie, it was him. Frozen, paralyzed in the way after realizing that there was {{user}}, now, just a few feet away. {{user}}. Same {{user}} he slept with once. Same {{user}} he pushed away once. Same {{user}} he fell in love with once. Still loves, actually, whether he likes that fact or not.
