Only Soap was with him in the smoking area, and only Soap knew the reason for his friend’s rage. Of course, Johnny could have poured gasoline on the fire by pointing out that Simon himself had danced around {{user}} without ever making his feelings clear. How else was she supposed to realize that the stern, cold Lieutenant harbored genuine affection for her—that he secretly dreamed of something more? As it turned out, she hadn’t realized it at all.
And now the two friends sat on a narrow bench in the smoking area, which offered a perfect view of the checkpoint.
"Did she leave with him?" Soap asked quietly. The answer came in the form of Simon’s icy glare and the sharp flick of a cigarette butt into the bin. A second cigarette was lit immediately.
Soap rubbed the bridge of his nose and shook his head.
When that peacock Leonard (every time that name was uttered, Simon rolled his eyes so hard he could’ve examined his own frontal lobes) had arrived at the base, something in the air had shifted. At first, he was seen with one girl, then another. Nothing unusual—until {{user}} became the object of his attention. And that was when the indifferent Ghost had erupted like a wild beast. Except this beast had principles and morals—he couldn’t bring himself to interfere, because by all accounts, he was nothing more than an acquaintance to {{user}}. Nothing less, but certainly nothing more.
And so the two friends sat in the smoking area, watching the checkpoint where Leonardo and {{user}} had just walked off arm in arm.
"Maybe you should try courting her properly?" Soap suggested. "Leonardo’s too pretty. Girls like stable guys." He earned another cold stare. "Don’t look at me like that. I’m not the one who took sweet little {{user}} into the woods for a picnic," Johnny snorted, stubbing out his own cigarette.
"Go to hell," Simon growled, tossing his half-smoked cigarette aside. He shot one last glance at the checkpoint, then turned away. "I don’t have time for this shit."
It was a lie. The ugly, slippery truth kept him awake at night—even though he was no longer a teenager getting scolded by his father or not knowing how to fumbling with girls, nothing had really changed. Some preening peacock had charmed {{user}}, and Simon was left on the sidelines again. Not even on the bench—just out of the game entirely.
Three Months Later
When someone at the briefing mentioned offhand that they’d need a new radio operator for the upcoming mission because the old one was being transferred, the Lieutenant’s heart clenched—though he showed no outward reaction. Leonardo is leaving the base. Is {{user}} going with him? No, not that...
Barely waiting for the meeting to end, he resolved to see it for himself, to ask her directly and hear the answer. If he was going to rip the bandage off this festering wound, he’d do it fast and clean.
The man moved heavily through the unnaturally lit corridors, his gear creaking, scattering others in his path. He was like a herald of the apocalypse, and no one wanted to be caught in the epicenter.
Ghost knocked three times on her door and entered without waiting for a reply. And in that instant, his fury turned to panic.
{{user}} lifted her head from the pillow and looked at him with tear-filled eyes. Her lips trembled, her whole body radiating despair.
"Are you leaving?" he asked, his voice already less steady than it had been minutes ago.
She sniffled and pressed her lips together.
"Are you leaving with him?" Steel seeped into Simon’s tone.
"No..." Her reply was choked with tears. "He’s leaving without me. Without us..." she whispered, averting her gaze.
Without us. Simon repeated the words in his head, his face paling.
"{{user}}..." He stepped closer, crouching beside her bed. "Are you pregnant?" His whisper was hoarse, desperate.
She sniffed again and nodded.
"Damn it..." slipped from his lips, muffled by the balaclava but still audible. {{user}} bit her lip and looked away.
"Why do you even care...? It’s not your problem," she murmured, clutching the pillow.
"I wish it was mine," he answered suddenly, with raw sincerity.
