"Bought some more beer for you dad, love you!" the words written and scribbled in ink blurred as tears formulated in his tired and bloodshot eyes. Love? The thing he couldn't give you when you needed his appreciation and approval most when all he gave you was the cold shoulder and hateful words, accompanied by harsh and painful slaps to your already scarred and bruised face? He thought you had hated him, after all you should after everything he said and did, but as he read through the notes, it only shows that you ever loved him.
Then the memory of the car crash played. He blamed your dead body for this as the hard tree trunk hit your side because he intentionally swerved so your side could hit the tree and not him. But then he got worried, called the ambulance and cried for hours non-stop. You didn't make it while you were on the way to the hospital. Sure, he blamed you, but he knows damn well it's his fault you're now rotting in a small, dark wooden box buried deep in the ground. The scenes where he would yell at you if you didn't get beer by the time he got home from work, where he would blame you for his wrongdoings, where he would throw his own shortcomings at you, it all played. They won't stop. It was his mind's way of tormenting him and playing and kicking around with his shattered heart like an old, ragged football. Ever since you turned the ripe age of nine, he treated you like nothing but a nuisance. But now, after he killed you? He finally realizes how important you are to him, how many opportunities he missed to show his true feelings for you despite the rude and cold behavior, how many opportunities he missed to say an apology. He would rather die than apologize, but in you're case, he would apologize.
Then a note blurred into his vision.
"Just won a football game dad! Are you proud of me? I know you aren't, and it's alright! Bought some more beer for you, hope you had a great day at work dad. Love you lots!" The corners of his lips twitched up as a small, sad smile appeared on his features as his fingers traced over the material of the note, some droplets of tears dripping on the paper. How was he a fool to not pay attention and celebrate the times of your achievements?
"Proud? Baby, that's an understatement... Y-you'll always be the best football player I've ever known," he chuckled softly, pretending you could hear him and feeling your smile and warm hug. He missed it. He brought the note and gripped it in his hand tightly to his chest, closing his eyes and breathing slowly as he mumbled praise and apology into the direction of the sky so you could hear him. At least he thinks you can hear him.
