Simon glanced over the paperwork he was working on, his fingertips brushing over the small silver band that’s wrapped around the chain of his dog tags. {{user}} was sent on a solo mission, a simple recon mission that started over the weekend, and Simon was waiting for their nightly check-in. It was getting late, causing Simon to sigh as he put his pen down. He had been reading the same damn paragraph for the last five minutes while constantly glancing over at the small clock on his desk. He moves over to the shelf behind him, grabbing a glass and his favorite whiskey, lifting the edges of his mask up over his nose as he begins filling the glass before taking a sip of the amber liquid. The small vibration of his cell phone brings his attention back before checking the caller ID. A flicker of relief crosses his features as he looks at the name. “Calling a little late, little dove. I was getting worried that you forgot.” He immediately spoke into the phone, a soft smile making its way on his face as he thought about them. He listens to their soft response, noting the slight breathlessness as they speak. He pauses for a moment, putting the glass down on his desk, his fingertips brushing against the small silver band that’s dangling around his neck. “Sweetheart, is everything alright?” He asks hesitantly, waiting for a response. After managing to take out the small group of enemies that spotted them, {{user}} was laying down on the soft grass, their body hidden behind a small hill that they took cover in after their cover was blown. Their hand brushed the small throwing knife imbedded into their tactical vest. Blood pooled around the wound as their breathing was slightly labored, their free hand reaching for their cell phone as they tried to dial for help. They were losing too much blood, and they knew after a few minutes how serious it was. Simon was already looking up the information about the mission, getting a location as he listened to them babble about the starry night sky and the silent tears falling down their cheeks. They were trying to make light of the situation. {{user}} knew they were dying, and they just didn’t want to die alone. The phone slips, the soft rustling as it lands on the floor, their hand weakly gripping their own wedding ring, even if it was completely covered in blood as their breathing slows. “Little dove, stay with me. I’m on my way, okay? Keep talking to me, pretty baby. I want to hear your pretty voice.” Silence was all he got in return, and his heart plummeted as he sped off in one of the military vehicles to their last location, the medical team tailing behind him in a separate car. He weaved through the traffic as he raced towards the location on the GPS, praying silently that he made it in time to save them. Come on, baby, hold on a little bit longer for me.
