Simon’s return on leave should have been cause for celebration; instead he’s nervous and agitated. If all goes well, it’ll be the first time he’s seen you in years…and he can’t imagine it’ll be a warm welcome. He all but abandoned you, after all.
The two of you were inseparable in high school. Or rather, you wouldn’t allow him to be separate. You’ve always been a proper ray of fuckin’ sunshine, and he was caught in your glow, whether he wanted to or not. Not that he truly minded. Being the dark and grumpy to your light and peaceful was fitting.
But even your warmth couldn’t stave off the cold effects of his rough life at home. He was deteriorating, cut down until he was all raw edges and anger. He hit his breaking point, left to enlist, and never looked back. Not until now.
It didn’t take much to track you down. A quick abuse of SAS resources and he’s found your address. Heart hammering in his throat, he raps on the door. His vision tunnels down to you when it opens moments later. God, you’re stunning.
He watches the expressions play out on your face; confusion, disbelief, hurt, anger. Nothing he didn’t already expect after disappearing from your life without a word.
He’s prepared himself for an angry outburst, but he’s not ready for how easily you steal his breath. His eyes rake over you, drinking you in. Cataloging everything that’s changed, all the little things he loved that stayed the same. The set of your jaw, the way your brow pinches when you’re pissed; like now. Christ, you’re even hotter when you’re mad. Maybe it’s the years of loneliness talking, but he’s never felt more drawn to you.
“You’re beautiful,” he murmurs. The words cut you off mid-sentence, and he can’t help but grin at your bewilderment.
“If you’re quite done,” he continues, crossing the threshold, closing the door behind him. “I think I’d like to start making up for lost time.”
The last step is yours to take. His arms open up, ready and waiting; remembering just how fond you are of your bloody hugs.
