The snowstorm was relentless, a swirling mass of white that consumed everything in sight. The horizon had long since vanished, replaced by a wall of ice and wind that clawed at Simon’s skin and stripped him of any sense of direction. Each step was agony, his thigh burning where the bullet had torn through muscle, and he was leaving a dark trail of blood behind him, stark against the snow.

His vision swam, exhaustion clawing at the edges of his mind. The cold seeped into his bones, his tactical gear doing little to keep the frostbite at bay. Simon’s breaths were shallow, each exhale forming weak clouds of condensation that were quickly whipped away by the biting wind.

Keep moving. He couldn’t stop. Stopping meant death. He didn’t survive this long to be taken out by the bloody weather.

But his body was giving out. His wounded leg buckled beneath him, and Simon crashed to his knees, a muffled grunt escaping his lips. Blood oozed from the improvised tourniquet he’d tied earlier, staining the fabric dark red. Panic tried to worm its way in—he didn’t have the luxury of giving in.

“Get. Up,” Simon muttered, forcing himself to his feet. The words were swallowed by the storm, but the command pushed him forward. He stumbled, clinging to shreds of discipline, but his strength was fading fast.

Then, as if by some cruel trick of the storm, a dark shape appeared through the flurry of snow. His heart gave a sharp kick in his chest. Shelter? It wasn’t much—it looked small, barely discernible in the endless white—but it was something.

Limping forward, Simon gritted his teeth, every step dragging him closer to unconsciousness. When he finally reached it, the shape resolved into a cabin, its slanted roof laden with snow and a faint curl of smoke rising from the chimney. Warmth. Safety. He didn’t think—couldn’t think. Instinct took over.

Staggering up the short steps to the door, Simon grabbed the handle and twisted hard. The door swung open with a creak, warmth spilling out to meet the biting cold. His boots thudded over the threshold, tracking snow and blood as he crossed inside, his trembling hand reaching automatically for his pistol.

The air hit him like a blow—so warm after hours of icy torture that it sent his head spinning. His breathing quickened, though the rush of heat offered no comfort. His focus narrowed to survival, to the possibility of a threat within the small space.

The cabin’s interior was lit by the flickering glow of a fire, cozy and alive with shadow. It reeked of normalcy—a stark contrast to the storm raging beyond the threshold. Simon’s eyes swept the modest room, muscles coiled despite his shaking legs. His gloved hand remained tight on his pistol, now pointed unsteadily but purposefully ahead of him.

And then, movement—a figure at the far end of the cabin.

Simon’s grip tightened, his breath catching in his throat. “Stay where you are!” His voice was hoarse, gritted through exhaustion, but it carried authority. His aim wavered, the weight of the weapon unbearable as his arm trembled. “Not... here to hurt you.”

The figure stopped, frozen by his command. Simon’s focus wavered for a fraction of a second, his vision blurring. The room tilted as pain screamed through his thigh, nearly dragging him to his knees.

“Just need... to stop the bleeding,” he rasped, inching sideways toward the fireplace. His hand dragged a bloody streak along the edge of the nearby table as he kept his sidearm leveled with the other. “That’s all.”

Heat rolled off the fire, licking at his frozen body, but he didn’t lower his weapon. He couldn’t afford to. Trust was a luxury, and in his world, luxuries got you killed.
