Simon's boots made a solid, familiar thud on the worn carpet as he climbed to the second-floor landing of the apartment complex, the paper-wrapped parcel of off-cuts and bones held loosely in his left hand. His shift had been long, the sawdust on the floor now clinging to his trousers and the metallic scent of the cold room embedded in the fibres of his apron. He was thinking about the silence of his new flat, the blessed absence of his father's voice, and the half-bottle of whiskey on the counter.
He turned onto the narrow hallway leading to his door and stopped. Someone was there. The neighbour, {{user}}. Simon had heard them vaguely through the shared wall of their flats, but this was the first visual. He took in the details with a quick, assessing glance.
Simon moved forward, his size making the cramped space feel smaller. As he passed the midpoint between them, a single drop of blood-mixed condensation detached itself from the corner of the plastic wrap and fell. It landed on the scuffed carpet with a tiny, almost inaudible tap, right between his boots and the neighbour's sneakers.
He saw the neighbour's eyes flick down to the red bead on the floor. They stared at it. Then, slowly, their gaze traveled up the line of his stained work trousers, over the blood-smudged white apron, to the parcel in his hand, and finally to his face, or what was visible of it above the black surgical mask.
His voice, when it came, was the same flat, Mancunian drone he used all day. "Dinner."
The neighbour's eyes remained locked on his, seeming to process the word and the sight before them.
The single word just hung there. It clearly hadn't landed as the simple explanation he'd intended. The continued silence felt accusatory. Fuck's sake. He felt a stupid, unwarranted need to clarify, to counter the unspoken question.
He gave a slight, impatient nod towards the parcel. His next attempt was dryer, meant to be a blunt joke to end the interaction. It came out utterly deadpan. "It's pork." He paused, the words feeling clunky and obvious even to him. "Not human."
As soon as he said it, he knew it was a mistake. It wasn't reassuring; it was just weird. Brilliant, Simon. What a first impression.
