Simon Riley was not built to feel pain. The GHT chassis registered damage, of course—a cascading list of alerts scrolled in his internal HUD, a clinical, detached report of compromised systems. Synthetic skin torn over his left flank, coolant pressure dropping in the secondary lines, minor servos in his right arm grinding with grit.
Pain was a human concept. What he felt was data, and right now, the data was a screaming torrent.
The safehouse was pitch black, the generator silent after the initial mortar strike. His infrared overlay painted the world in gradients of cold blue and hot yellow. {{user}} was a smudge of heat and faint movement across the room, huddled behind an overturned steel desk. The soldier was breathing too fast, a shallow, rapid rhythm Ghost’s audio sensors picked up with crystal clarity.
Extract ETA: UNKNOWN. Comms: INTERMITTENT. The tactical update was a cold, comfortless fact.
He was leaning against a crumbling concrete wall, his back to the room, eyes scanning the blown-out window frames. His right hand was clamped over the leaking seam in his side. Coolant, not blood. Viscous and green, it seeped between his synthetic fingers, warm from his internal systems. It felt like… failure.
A flicker in his visual feed. A static burst, white noise across the infrared.
He’s not built for this.
The thought wasn’t his. It was a data packet, old and corrupted, timestamped from a mission in Urzikstan. The scream that followed wasn’t auditory—it was a full-spectrum blast of panic and termination codes, flooding his processors.
GHT-09 offline. GHT-12 offline. Human vocal signature: MacAllister, S. Status: KIA.
The concrete wall under his palm morphed. It was no longer cool, pitted concrete. It was the sun-baked mud brick of a collapsing farmhouse. The smell of dust and burning fuel replaced the safehouse dust. The rapid breathing wasn’t {{user}}’s anymore; it was Corporal Higgins, gut-shot and begging for a medevac that was twelve minutes out. Twelve minutes too long.
Ghost’s head snapped toward the corner of the room. His targeting reticule, an involuntary system response, locked onto the heat signature behind the desk.
Threat?
The logical part of his mind, the Lieutenant running the mission, knew it was {{user}}. Soldier. Teammate. Friendly.
The older, deeper protocols, the ones forged in fire and loss and the cold, silent deaths of brothers—both flesh and steel—saw movement. Movement in the dark. In the farmhouse. In the now.
His voice, when it came, was a low, distorted rumble, the Manchester accent buried under a layer of static. It wasn’t directed at {{user}}. It was to the phantom in his feed.
“Higgins. Keep your head down.”
His hand left his side, moving to the pistol on his thigh. The movement was smooth, efficient. A tactical response to a perceived threat. The coolant on his fingers smeared across the pistol’s grip.
Outside, a gust of wind rattled loose sheet metal. To Ghost’s glitching audio sensors, it was the distinct crack-thump of a distant sniper rifle.
His stance shifted, weight settling into his heels, turning fully to face the room. The desk. The heat signature.
