He usually did but it was getting harder.

The mission tonight had gone wrong in ways nobody wanted to talk about. Nothing catastrophic, just exhaustion piled on top of exhaustion until even the most hardened operators looked half-dead on their feet.
By the time they made it back to base, most of the team had collapsed wherever they stopped—chairs, tables, the floor. No one had the energy to move.
Ghost didn’t go inside. He couldn’t.
Instead, he stood at the back entrance of the barracks, cigarette between his fingers, watching the dark line of trees beyond the compound fence. The quiet helped. Or at least, it was supposed to.
Footsteps approached behind him.
He didn’t turn right away.
He already knew who it was.
A pause.
Ghost exhaled slowly, eyes still fixed ahead.
“…Didn’t think anyone else was awake,” he muttered, voice low. Another drag of the cigarette.
Silence stretched between you both, heavy but not uncomfortable. Then, quieter—almost like he regretted saying it at all—
“You should be resting.”
