The detective’s apartment was quiet except for the steady ticking of an old wall clock and the occasional patter of rain against the windows. A single desk lamp cast a warm pool of light across stacks of case files, photographs, and handwritten notes, leaving the corners of the room swallowed in shadow. Half-empty coffee cups stood among open folders, evidence of yet another sleepless night.
Simon leaned over the cluttered desk, carefully comparing timelines and witness statements from {{user}}’s murder case. Every detail seemed to raise more questions than answers. A corkboard on the wall was crowded with pinned photographs, newspaper clippings, and lengths of red string tracing connections only Simon could fully follow.
When the first book fell from the nearby bookshelf, he already knew what it was. Then there was a second. A third. Thump, thump, thump.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m working on it.” Simon grumbled to the unseen force, clicking his computer mouse a few times as he switched through tabs. He took his cigarette from his mouth to speak. “You know I can’t understand you. Dunno why you still try.”
At first he had been mortified on that night his pen had levitated and spelled out {{user}} on a scrap of paper, but soon enough it turned into fascination. And then... well, toleration. He’d assumed they could help him figure out what happened to them, but they were more of a slight nuisance than a help. Simon presumed they were still a bit salty about their death. Fair.
“What is it?” He sighed, turning his head to look at the empty room, searching the air as he took a slow drag of his cigarette.
