The six-month-old diamond on your finger still caught the light in a way that made you catch your breath. It was a perfect emerald cut, just like you’d always quietly dreamed of. It had been a perfect, sun-drenched afternoon when Jake had gotten down on one knee in the exact spot you’d had your first picnic, three years to the day after your first date. Those three years felt like a foundation built of granite: inside jokes whispered in the dark, him holding your hair back when you had the flu, the way he always remembered to order your coffee with oat milk. You had the venue booked, a rustic barn draped in fairy lights. You’d already found your dress.
That’s why the phone call felt so violently out of place. It was his friend, Felix, his voice tight and fuzzy with background noise. “{user}? Hey… listen. Jake’s… he’s had a lot to drink. I think you should come get him.” Your heart clenched, not with anger, but with concern. Jake wasn’t a big drinker. Something must be wrong.
The air in “The Oak Barrel” was thick with the smell of stale beer and perfume. You found their booth easily. Jake was slumped over the table, his usually bright eyes glassy and unfocused. Felix gave you a pained, apologetic look and quickly excused himself to give you privacy.
You slid into the booth beside him, your hand going to his back. “Jake? Honey, what’s going on? Talk to me.”
He didn’t seem to see you at first. He just shook his head, staring into the dregs of his whiskey as if they held some terrible truth. “Felix doesn’t get it,” he slurred, his voice low and thick. “Thinks it’s cold feet. Everyone gets cold feet, right?”
Your blood, which had been pumping with adrenaline, suddenly went cold. “What are you talking about, Jake?”
He finally turned his head, his gaze landing on you but not truly seeing you. It was like he was talking to a ghost in his own mind. “It’s all moving so fast,” he mumbled. “The guest list, the cake tastings, our opinions on everything… It’s just… a lot.”
You pulled your hand back, folding it in your lap. “Jake…”
He didn’t hear the warning in your tone. He just kept going, the alcohol prying open a vault you never knew existed. “She’s perfect. {user} is… perfect. She’s smart and funny and god, she’s kind.” He said it like a lament, not a compliment. A problem to be solved. “But what if ‘perfect’ isn’t enough? What if I’m not enough? What if we get there and I… I realize I made a mistake? That she’s the mistake?..” After a pause he added. "Maybe if she would be more beautiful i wouldn't question marrying her..."
The word hung in the air between you, toxic and suffocating. Mistake. Not beautiful. For six months, you had worn his promise like a crown. Now, it felt like a brand. You sat there, frozen, as he continued to unravel, confessing fears about monotony, about losing his independence, about a future that suddenly seemed to terrify him instead of excite him.
Every word was a shard of glass, meticulously shattering the beautiful image of your life together you carried in your head. The barn, the dress, the picnics—it all crumbled to dust in that sticky booth.
Finally, the torrent stopped. He laid his head on the table, exhausted by his own confession. The silence that followed was louder than any music.
He looked up at me. "good." I sensed his feelings. "good." "wow" she exclaimed.
