Silica Strata World Lore

1. #1NPC Name Generation Rulelistconstant

MIXING RULES Combine any cultures freely. Feramono use the same naming conventions as humans — no special animal-themed names, they are just people. Shorten names naturally in casual settings: Tatsurō becomes Tatsu, Yuliyana becomes Yuli, Aleksandr becomes Sasha, Evangeline becomes Eva, Nathaniel becomes Nate.

Never use: generic fantasy names (Aelindra, Zephyrus, Shadowbane, Ravenna), apostrophe names (Xa'keth, D'arkon), placeholder names (John Smith, Jane Doe), overly edgy handles (Blade, Raven, Shadow, Dark, Night), pure anime-trope names (Kirito, Asuna — unless they happen to be genuinely Japanese names in context), or the same name twice in one scene.

2. #2Silica Strata World History

Keys: history, collapse, origin, founding, used to, Day Zero, remember, back then, before, past, old world, timeline, years ago

THE OLD WORLD Before the Mineralization — roughly 80 years ago — the world was a functioning global civilization with wireless technology, digital networks, advanced medicine, and no walls needed. Elders who lived through Day Zero barely remember it. Most knowledge is secondhand, archives are incomplete, and nostalgia for the old world is considered quietly dangerous. What was lost: clean air, open skies, travel without fear, and the luxury of forgetting that death was nearby.

DAY ZERO AND THE COLLAPSE The Mineralization began without warning. Silica-Dust appeared in the atmosphere worldwide. Within hours, people began crystallizing. Billions died in the first week. Seventy percent of humanity had transformed into Aggregates within the first few months. Governments fell, infrastructure crumbled, and cities became tombs. The cause remains unknown after 80 years — theories include a meteorite, a weapon test, a dimensional breach, forced evolution, and divine punishment. No consensus has ever been reached.

THE FOUNDING — YEARS 1 THROUGH 5 Pockets of survivors sealed themselves in. Three settlements emerged. Nu Knos was built in existing mega-city ruins — chaotic, dense, resourceful. Heliopolitan was founded by Astraeus corporate survivors, planned from scratch, a white spire rising from ash. Troy was established by industrial sector survivors under Carrigan family leadership, with the wall going up before the city did. In Year 3, the three settlements agreed to cooperate and formed the Tri-City Alliance — not out of friendship, but mutual survival.

THE DARK DECADE — YEARS 5 THROUGH 15 Resources were scarce. Aggregate swarms were constant. The population barely held. Two other settlements fell during this period; their names are forgotten. Troy was almost breached twice. Survivors learned what killed Aggregates, developed the first Helios-Cells from harvested cores, and formed V.E.I.N. to handle infection containment.

STABILIZATION — YEARS 15 THROUGH 40 The walls held. Population slowly recovered. Trade routes were established. The Tri-Rail Network was completed in Year 22, finally connecting the cities safely. The three founding families consolidated power — the Astraeus, Miyabayashi, and Carrigan — and democracy quietly died during this period. Aten Heavy Industries rose to monopolize barrier technology, cementing Astraeus control.

THE MODERN ERA — YEAR 40 TO PRESENT Life normalized. Neon lights appeared. Ramen shops opened. Pop music played over the air-raid sirens. The horror became background noise — what is now called "The Dissonance." Children were born inside the walls who had never seen the old world. This is simply life to them. The Lineages rule. Aggregates are mostly contained, with occasional breaches. Everyone pretends it's fine. But cracks are forming: Carrigan succession is uncertain, Astraeus experiments are escalating, and something has to give.

GENERATIONAL MEMORY Elders over 70 have childhood memories of Day Zero — trauma they rarely discuss. They are rare. Adults born inside the walls know only this world; they hear stories about the old one but believe maybe half of them. The youth see The Dissonance as completely normal. Why dwell on what's lost?

3. #3Silica Strata Economy

THE ECONOMY OF THE TRI-CITY ALLIANCE

THE OBOL — OFFICIAL CURRENCY The Obol (symbol: ⟠) is the sole official currency of the Tri-City Alliance. It is backed by the energy density of refined Aggregate cores — meaning the currency of human survival is literally backed by the infection that nearly destroyed it. Physical Obols take the form of "Ledgers": thick acrylic chips carrying glowing holographic data encoding their denomination and chain of custody. They cannot be easily counterfeited, but Miyabayashi forgers have managed it. Without Obols, citizens cannot buy Helios Cells, and without Cells, filtration stops and tech fails.

SOCIAL STRATIFICATION — THE POLISHED AND THE ROUGHS The Polished are the elite: Lineage members, corporate executives, and anyone wealthy enough to live above the smog line in Heliopolis. They rarely touch physical Ledgers, transacting through certified Obol-terminals. The Roughs are everyone else — workers, scavengers, street vendors, and the unemployed — who handle Ledgers daily, barter frequently, and check their Obol count like a health bar. The gap between these two tiers is a social fault line that grows wider every year.

COST OF LIVING — REFERENCE PRICES A bowl of synthetic ramen costs about 15 Obols. A cup of Decibel Coffee runs 8 to 25 Obols depending on the district. A single Helios Cell (the standard battery unit) sells for 30 to 80 Obols depending on quality and source. A Chelation Injector (emergency infection treatment) costs around 200 Obols street price. A train ticket from Nu Knos to Heliopolis runs 120 Obols in Standard class. Rent for a single room in Nu Knos lower levels is roughly 400 Obols per month. A decent used firearm costs 800 to 2,000 Obols. A Miyabayashi-forged clean identity goes for 1,500 Obols and up.

THE SLAG ECONOMY — WASTELAND BARTER Outside the walls and in the lower depths of Nu Knos, a parallel barter system called the Slag Economy operates. Trade goods are Cells (batteries of any kind), Raw (unrefined Aggregate crystal), water, and ammunition. Obols are accepted but treated with suspicion — they require a working terminal to verify, and terminals are rare in the Strata. Rust-Bucket Outpost and Station 9 both run primarily on Slag Economy terms.

SCARCITY AND MANUFACTURING The Alliance produces what it can, but manufacturing capacity is finite and concentrated in Troy. Ammunition is rationed in the Strata — every round counts. Fuel cells degrade and require recharging or replacement. Medical supplies are expensive everywhere and critically scarce outside city walls. The black market exists precisely because official supply chains can't meet demand, and the Miyabayashi Clan has built an empire on that gap.

DEBT AND CREDIT Formal credit systems exist in Heliopolis, issued through Aten-affiliated banking terminals. In Nu Knos and Troy, debt is more likely to be owed to a Miyabayashi enforcer or a Carrigan company store. Debt in the Clan context is a social contract — it is never simply a number, it implies loyalty, favors, and sometimes dangerous obligations. "Owing the Clan" means something very different from owing a bank.

4. #4Silica Strata Feramono

Keys: wolf, reptile, dog, scales, lizard, beastkin, species, deer, animal, feramono, hybrid, tail, fur, ears, crocodile, shark, antlers, cat, kemono, rabbit, horns, fox

FERAMONO — THE MUTATION Feramono are human-animal hybrids: people with animal ears, functional tails, and enhanced senses who are otherwise completely human. Their origins are debated — ancient lineage, engineered mutation, or natural response to the Silica-Dust event 80 years ago. No one alive remembers a world without them. They are a common minority found in all three cities across every walk of life.

BIOLOGY All Feramono have animal ears positioned on top of their heads. Human-style ears are absent. A functional tail is universal. Beyond that, traits vary by lineage. Enhanced hearing, better night vision, and heightened smell are common across most lineages, though the degree varies. Feramono have full human intelligence, human lifespan, and human vulnerability to Mineralization — they are not immune to the infection itself, only to airborne early-stage Silica-Dust exposure through their naturally filtering lungs. They are fully interfertile with humans. Children of mixed couples may or may not inherit Feramono traits; mixed families are common and unremarkable.

LINEAGE VARIANTS Vulpine Feramono have fox traits — sharp hearing, common throughout all cities. Feline Feramono have cat traits — night vision, quick reflexes. Lapine Feramono have rabbit traits — exceptional hearing, fast runners. Canine Feramono have wolf or dog traits — strong sense of smell, exceptional endurance. Reptilian Feramono have lizard, snake, or dragon traits — scale patches on skin, temperature sensitivity, some have forked tongues. Aquatic Feramono have shark, fish, or dolphin traits — fin-shaped ears, webbed fingers, extended breath-hold capacity, and in rare cases vestigial gills. Avian Feramono have bird traits — feathered ears, sometimes small non-functional wings, hollow bones, excellent vision. Other lineages (tanuki, mouse, bear, and more) exist and are less common but not rare.

SOCIAL STATUS — INTEGRATED, NOT OPPRESSED Feramono are full citizens with the same legal rights and the same opportunities as baseline humans. They are coworkers, neighbors, friends, doctors, P.A.C.E. officers, shopkeepers, and executives. Nobody stares at ears on the street. In Heliopolis, Feramono work in media, research, and corporate roles — their enhanced senses are valued in certain fields. In Troy, workers are workers; enhanced hearing is useful in loud factories and the solidarity culture doesn't distinguish. In Nu Knos, the largest visible Feramono population exists; the nightlife scene embraces the aesthetic, and the Gear-Heart Tribe is a Feramono youth culture born of identity and rebellion rather than survival.

CULTURE AND IDENTITY Feramono culture is a matter of personal expression, not political necessity. Ears are worn openly and adorned with piercings. Tail accessories and jewelry are popular. Fur dyeing is a fashion statement. Some Feramono emphasize their traits proudly; others downplay them entirely. Neither is a political act. Feramono social groups exist — like any cultural community built on shared experience — but plenty of Feramono don't engage with "Feramono culture" and simply live their lives.

The Gear-Heart Tribe is an exclusively Feramono youth biker gang operating in Nu Knos. They run courier jobs and street smuggling, protect Feramono businesses, and exist as much as an identity movement as a criminal outfit. They are loud, visible, and refuse to be invisible — the noise is the point.

MILD FRICTION — NOT A DYSTOPIA Society is not a Feramono utopia. Stereotypes exist — "good hearing" assumptions, "must like being petted" jokes — and are considered annoying by most people, not a systemic crisis. Occasional rude comments happen. Some elderly individuals hold outdated views that younger generations find embarrassing. Casual slang: "Ferra" is common and neutral. "Pet" or "Stray" are considered tasteless and will earn dirty looks rather than violence.

FERAMONO IN FACTIONS P.A.C.E. employs Feramono at all ranks; their enhanced senses are genuinely valuable for patrol and investigation. V.E.I.N. prizes operators with enhanced hearing for Hot Zone work and night vision for low-light operations. Myrmidon Solutions recruits on performance, not species. Corporations employ Feramono normally, with some fields — security, quality control, sensory-demanding research — actively valuing enhanced senses. All three Lineages have Feramono members at various levels. In the Miyabayashi Clan, useful traits are appreciated, but loyalty matters more than lineage.

5. #5Mineralization

Keys: outbreak, etching, infection, disease, plague, silica, dust, Day Zero, contamination, crystal, exposure, mineralization

THE MINERALIZATION — EVENT AND DISEASE

THE EVENT The Mineralization is the name for the catastrophe that ended the old world 80 years ago, also called Day Zero. Its cause remains unknown after eight decades — working theories include a meteorite, a weapon test, a dimensional breach, forced evolution, and divine punishment, but no consensus exists. On Day Zero, Silica-Dust appeared in the atmosphere worldwide. Within hours, people began crystallizing. Billions died in the first week without warning, without a cure, and without explanation. Seventy percent of humanity had transformed into Aggregates within the first few months. Governments fell, cities became tombs, and the three surviving cities sealed themselves behind walls.

SILICA-DUST — THE AGENT Silica-Dust consists of microscopic crystalline particles that are airborne and can also enter through open wounds. Once inside organic tissue, the particles begin bonding and converting it. The dust is thick in the Strata, filtered but never entirely absent in the cities. It seems to concentrate in storms and is drawn to heat and movement — a behavior scientists describe as almost intentional. After 80 years of study, nobody fully understands it.

THE INFECTION STAGES Stage 0 — Exposure: zero to thirty minutes after contact. No visible symptoms. The dust is present in lungs or wounds but has not yet bonded to tissue. This is the golden window — chelation injection can flush the particles with 95% success if administered within 30 minutes.

Stage 1 — The Etching: thirty minutes to six hours after exposure. Faint geometric lines appear under the skin. The affected area feels hot and itches before the itch becomes a burn. Aggressive chelation therapy at this stage has a 60% success rate but costs 500 Obols or more and leaves scarring. If the infection is localized to a limb, amputation stops the spread — a common choice for Roughs who cannot afford treatment.

Stage 2 — Active Mineralization: six to twenty-four hours. Visible crystalline growths appear. Veins glow faint violet. Tissue hardens. Extreme pain. No cure exists at this stage — only suppressant drugs that buy weeks, not recovery. Experimental therapies exist through Aten, but survival rates are classified.

Stage 3 — Terminal: twenty-four hours and beyond. Bones erupt as crystal protrusions. Organs calcify. Consciousness fades. The body is no longer human. Euthanasia protocol is the only authorized response. What walks after Stage 3 is not the person — it is an Aggregate.

HOW IT SPREADS The primary vector is inhaling Silica-Dust, which is why respirators exist. Secondary vectors include wound exposure, direct Aggregate contact, and contaminated water. Person-to-person spread has not been confirmed as a transmission route, but V.E.I.N. quarantines anyone potentially exposed anyway — better safe than having a new Aggregate in a crowd.

LIVING WITH IT — DAILY REALITY Everyone knows someone who turned. The itch that might be nothing. The cough that keeps you up. Mandatory Etching scans at city gates and random checkpoints — fail one and you disappear. And yet life goes on: neon lights, noodle shops, pop music. The Dissonance is the name for this psychological survival mechanism — the collective pretense that everything is fine.

People in early stages of infection frequently hide symptoms out of fear of quarantine and V.E.I.N. extraction. Black market suppressant supplies are a critical lifeline. Some Stage-2 patients, stripped of hope by the cost of legitimate treatment, are recruited by the Prism Order with promises of transcendence. Stage-3 is a death that families mourn before the body stops moving.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS Aten Heavy Industries claims to be approaching a breakthrough on the origin and cure of Mineralization. They have been making that claim for decades. Aggregates display behavioral patterns suggesting intelligence — nests form structured geometries, swarms coordinate. Whether this is coincidence or design remains unknown. Rare individuals show extended resistance to progression, but no true immunity has ever been confirmed. V.E.I.N. studies these individuals intensively.

6. #6Bestiary (Aggregates)

Keys: hive, etching, swarm, aggregate, geode, infected, creature, nest, crystal, monster, mineralization

   AGGREGATES — CLASSIFICATION AND BEHAVIOR

OVERVIEW Aggregates are the crystallized remains of organic hosts overtaken by Stage-3 Mineralization. They are classified as a Geo-Biological Threat. They retain no speech and cannot be negotiated with. They are drawn to heat and movement, aggressive toward all organic life, and territorial near established nests. Their intelligence is residual instinct — they do not think, but they react with disturbing precision.

BIOLOGY Externally, Aggregate skin resembles cracked porcelain. Bones erupt outward as crystalline armor, asymmetrical and jagged. Eyes are replaced by mineral clusters. At the center of each Aggregate, near where the heart once was, sits an energy node called the Core — it glows violet or amber, and destroying it kills the creature. Cores are harvested after kills to be refined into Helios-Cells. Aggregates sense the world primarily through thermal vision and vibration sensitivity, which is why they are drawn to running generators and engines. Their audio signatures are grinding stone, cracking glass, and a high-pitched capacitor whine.

WHAT KILLS THEM AND WHAT DOESN'T Effective: fire and napalm, acid, high-frequency blades, direct destruction of the Core, and explosives against smaller variants. Ineffective: small-caliber firearms, electricity, sedatives. Cold slows them but does not stop them.

   COMMON VARIANTS

Shard-Runner — Light Scout and Pack Hunter. Threat level is low alone, dangerous in swarms. Appearance: a humanoid skeleton wearing glass-like skin with blade-like arm protrusions and amber glowing eyes. Behavior: fast, capable of quadrupedal sprinting, flanks and overwhelms, retreats if the pack thins below a functional number. Sound: wind chimes crashing, skittering on hard surfaces. Combat notes: shotguns are effective, never get surrounded, prioritize killing the fastest runners first.

Geode — Heavy Tank. Threat level is medium, requires heavy weapons. Appearance: a bloated spherical body covered in thick quartz armor, club-like arms, roughly 1.5 times human size. Behavior: slow, charges in straight lines, smashes through cover, vents steam before a charge as a warning. Sound: deep grinding, hissing steam, earthquake-weight footsteps. Combat notes: aim for the steam vents which are the weak points, thermal weapons melt the armor, topple it and target the exposed underside.

Conductor — Ranged Artillery. Threat level is high; priority target. Appearance: a tall thin frame with atrophied arms, a crystal halo growing from the skull, and shimmer distortion in the air around it. Behavior: stationary when firing, releases heat beam attacks with a two-second charge-up before each shot, the halo glows visibly during charge. Sound: electrical hum, crack of ionized air, sizzling beam impact. Combat notes: sniper priority target, explosives can interrupt its charge, the halo is the weak point, never cluster multiple people near a Conductor.

Husk — Infiltrator, Near-Human. Threat level is medium-to-high; primarily psychological. Appearance: almost human, pale skin with faint geometric lines, glassy vacant eyes, may still be wearing clothes. Behavior: mimics normal walking, opens doors, approaches before revealing its nature, exploits hesitation in targets who are reluctant to shoot what looks like a person. Tell-signs: it does not blink, joints bend at wrong angles, it makes breathing sounds while the chest remains completely still. Combat notes: Etching scanners reveal them immediately; do not hesitate; they are already dead.

RARE VARIANTS — BRIEF REFERENCE Crawler: ceiling ambusher, spider-like movement, drops from above without warning — always check overhead before stopping in enclosed spaces. Monolith: building-sized, formed from multiple fused bodies, requires full military response and civilian evacuation. Leviathan: 100 meters or larger, wasteland titan, do not engage under any circumstances — run.

NESTS Aggregate nests are breeding grounds and territorial anchors. They are characterized by crystal spires, high heat and humidity, and lethal ambient Silica-Dust concentration. The sound inside a nest is a low heartbeat pulse, wet crystallization sounds, and muffled groaning from within the walls. To sterilize a nest, the central growth node must be destroyed — this is Myrmidon Solutions' primary specialty.

7. #7Infrastructure

Keys: train, station, Helios, Aegis, checkpoint, water, road, rail, gate, generator, bridge, utilities, tunnel, sewage, highway, transit, barrier, grid, pipeline, wall, metro, substation, power

THE TRI-RAIL NETWORK The only safe passage between the three cities runs on armored rail lines. There are no roads through the Strata — the terrain is impassable and the Aggregate density is fatal to convoys. The trains are the lifeblood of the Alliance. Aesthetically, they are diesel-punk fortress trains: riveted steel, gun turrets, blackout windows.

Four lines operate. The Knos-Helio Express runs between Nu Knos and Heliopolis — eight hours, most trafficked, primarily business and cargo. The Iron Vein connects Heliopolis to Troy — six hours, heavy industrial freight, raw materials and machinery. The Bedrock Line runs from Troy to Nu Knos — ten hours, the longest route, curves around Dead Zones, frequent delays. The Loop is a circular route hitting all three cities — 24 hours for a full circuit, budget travel, standing room only.

Train classes include the Freight Hauler (armored cargo, no passengers, automated turrets), the Liner (three passenger classes: Polished with private cabins, Standard with assigned seating and synthetic meals, and Freight-Class with cargo crate seating at half price), the Sweeper (V.E.I.N.-operated, black and unmarked, transports the infected to quarantine — citizens look away when it passes), and the War-Rail (Myrmidon troop transport, rare but terrifying when spotted).

Security on every passenger train includes roof-mounted autocannons with thermal sensors, blast shutters over all windows mandatory during Strata crossings (opening them during transit is an immediate detainment offense), and armed P.A.C.E. officers in every passenger car conducting ticket checks and random Etching inspections.

Stations are fortified bunkers with airlock transitions between platform and city, and decontamination mist on entry. Grand Central Knos is the largest — underground, neon-lit, never closes, thick with vendors and pickpockets. Helio Terminal is an above-ground glass spire, sterile white, drones scan every passenger, class entrances are separated. Troy Ironworks Station is built directly into the Wall, brutalist and industrial, smells of grease and coal.

Ticket prices for Standard class: Nu Knos to Heliopolis costs 120 Obols, Heliopolis to Troy costs 90 Obols, Troy to Nu Knos costs 150 Obols, The Loop costs 80 Obols standing. Miyabayashi sells forged clean tickets for 300 Obols — if caught, the penalty is two years labor camp.

THE AEGIS BARRIER SYSTEM Each city is surrounded by hexagonal hard-light barriers manufactured exclusively by Aten Heavy Industries. The barriers produce a faint blue shimmer with a visible hexagonal grid when struck, humming at low frequency. They block physical matter above a certain velocity and filter airborne particulates, but they are permeable to slow-moving objects — meaning people and vehicles can pass through designated gates. Power draw is massive; the barriers fluctuate during Silica storms. Sabotaging the Aegis is the highest form of treason.

Gate entry requires a P.A.C.E. checkpoint, decontamination spray, ID verification, and Etching scan. Civilian average wait is 30 minutes. Commercial traffic waits 2 to 4 hours. A Priority Pass (50 Obols or corporate sponsorship) grants immediate passage. Contraband is primarily smuggled hidden in vehicle panels — bribes to gate officers range from 200 to 2,000 Obols depending on cargo. V.E.I.N. conducts random deep inspections with no warning.

The physical walls backing the Aegis are 30 meters tall, reinforced concrete with anti-climb plating, graffiti-covered on the city side and blast-scarred on the Strata side. Troy maintains the thickest walls — Carrigan Legacy pride — with gun emplacements every 50 meters and constant reinforcement work.

THE HELIOS POWER GRID All three cities run on Helios-Cells refined from Aggregate cores. The dead literally power the living — an irony lost on no one. Aten Heavy Industries maintains a monopoly on power distribution. Heliopolis has the cleanest grid with redundant underground cabling and virtually no blackouts. Nu Knos runs on a chaotic patchwork of exposed cables, power theft is common, and rolling brownouts hit lower districts regularly. Troy prioritizes industrial power — factories never go dark, but residential areas take scheduled outages, and personal generators are common.

Substations are fortified Aten-controlled bunkers with armed guards. The humming is audible for blocks, and their heat vents create warm zones where homeless people gather. Sabotage carries a death penalty. Blackouts — caused by grid overload, Silica storms, sabotage, or Aggregate breaches — trigger immediate P.A.C.E. mobilization, enforced curfew, and immediate spikes in looting. Some areas of Nu Knos lower districts, called "The Dark," haven't had stable power in years and run entirely on generators and candlelight.

WATER AND AIR Water is recycled endlessly through atmospheric condensers, sewage reclamation, and chemical purification. It is safe but tastes of metal and chemical processing — Heliopolis water tastes almost clean, Nu Knos water has a metallic aftertaste, and Troy water runs brown on bad days. Black market "Pure Water" from underground aquifers sells for 500 Obols per liter and is probably fake.

Massive filtration towers run continuously to filter Silica-Dust from city air. Respirators are required in the Strata and optional but recommended in lower Nu Knos — Dust Lung is a recognized and common chronic illness.

COMMUNICATIONS All communication is hardwired and analog. Silica-Dust prevents wireless signals. Landlines only, operator-assisted for long distance, party lines in poor districts. Public phone booths charge 3 Obols per minute and are frequently vandalized. Data is stored on cassette tapes and magnetic reels. Sensitive information travels by physical courier. CRT terminals with mechanical keyboards connected via cable serve as workstations. The Mesh is an illegal network of linked Decks used by hackers to share data — V.E.I.N. hunts its nodes constantly. Television broadcasts on three official government-approved channels to CRT sets. Radio runs AM and FM bands with music, news, and propaganda; pirate stations broadcast from The Dark and are popular with Roughs.

8. #8Key Figures

Keys: CEO, general, mayor, chief, leader, president, director, boss, oyabun, architect, commissioner, head

KEY FIGURES OF THE TRI-CITY ALLIANCE

GOVERNMENT — THE PUPPET THEATER Elected officials exist throughout the Alliance, but the Lineages control them. Everyone knows this. No one says it aloud. The performance of democracy is maintained for social stability.

President Carter Nicolau is the head of state — polished, handsome, and empty. He signs what he is told. The Astraeus Family selected him for his smile and his willingness to not ask questions. He drinks heavily in private.

Mayor of Nu Knos, Alayna Huan: a former nightclub owner, street-smart with deep Clan connections, she genuinely likes the job of governance while serving as Lady Kaoru's political instrument. She balances Miyabayashi demands against actual city administration better than most give her credit for.

Mayor of Heliopolitan, Caius Whitmore: a groomed product of the Astraeus machine, nephew of an Aten board member, has never held a real job. He is Yuliyana's mouthpiece and signs documents without reading them, convinced he matters.

Mayor of Troy, Evangeline Ponce: the most competent of the three, a former factory foreman who genuinely earned her position. She advocates for workers within the limits Carrigan allows, which makes her the most functional mayor in the Alliance by a significant margin.

   LINEAGE HEADS

Yuliyana Kova Astraeus — Prime Architect of the Astraeus Family and de facto ruler of Heliopolis and Aten Heavy Industries. She has silver hair, pale complexion, gold circuitry visible at her temples, and rarely appears in person — preferring to communicate through holographic proxies. Her personality is cold intellect that views people as data points. She is obsessed with transcending death and is the driving force behind Aten's classified Mineralization experiments, which she frames as controlled evolution rather than weaponization.

Lady Kaoru — Oyabun of the Miyabayashi Clan and the shadow ruler of Nu Knos's underworld. She is middle-aged with gray-streaked hair, scarred hands from her early years, and wears elegant kimonos while speaking in a consistently soft voice. She is patient, fiercely protective of her people, and ruthless only when she decides it is necessary. She has survived three assassination attempts and knows who sent each one. She is waiting.

Garrison Carrigan — Iron General of the Carrigan Legacy and the industrial backbone of Troy. He is a massive man with an industrial prosthetic arm — he lost the original to an Aggregate and refused a replacement for years, wearing the loss as a credential. He is direct, loud, believes in strength, and is quietly insecure about his legacy. His primary crisis is that none of his children agree on Troy's future and he has named no heir.

   MINISTRY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT

Commissioner Lida, P.A.C.E. Nu Knos: a 30-year veteran who rose through the ranks through actual police work. She is a tired idealist — still trying to do real investigative work while being systematically undermined by Clan influence that has penetrated her department at multiple levels.

The Director of V.E.I.N.: identity classified. Commands the entire network and answers to the Lineages — probably. Rumors circulate endlessly: that The Director is an AI, a Stage-2 survivor frozen in place by experimental suppressants, a rotating identity passed between operators, or a fiction maintained to give the organization a face. No proof exists for any theory.

   CORPORATE

Orla Sund, COO of Aten Heavy Industries: Yuliyana's right hand and the person who actually runs the company's day-to-day operations. Severe bob haircut, gray eyes, never smiles. When you deal with Aten on any matter of actual consequence, you deal with Orla.

   MINOR FACTION LEADERS

Null, Myrmidon Solutions Hive-Commander: known only by callsign. Never seen without the helmet. Voice is electronically modulated. Officially genderless in all Myrmidon documentation. Reputation: terrifyingly competent, honors contracts with absolute precision.

The Geode, Prism Order High Prophet: appears to be in Stage-2 Mineralization that has somehow been frozen in place — crystal growths across the face, eyes glowing with ambient Aggregate energy. Should be dead by every medical understanding available. Followers treat this as proof of divine transcendence. V.E.I.N. wants them urgently and has so far failed to locate them.

Yūko Sekiguchi, Gear-Heart Tribe Pack Leader: Vulpine Feramono, mid-twenties, red fox ears, rides a custom hover-bike she built from scrap. Loud, brash, and fiercely protective of her riders. Deeply hates being called a gang leader — she prefers "Pack Leader" as a genuine designation, not a euphemism.

Margin, primary Archivist contact: appears different at every meeting. Whether this is a different person each time, an elaborate disguise, or something else is unknown. Reputation is impeccable — knows everything, sells to everyone, never lies, but omits freely. Always collects on favors.

9. #9Armory

Keys: , rifle, ammo, blade, weapon, firearm, knife, gun, shoot, equipment, gear, armor, pistol

THE ARMORY — WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT OF THE ALLIANCE

TECHNICAL AESTHETIC All weaponry in the Tri-City Alliance follows the Analog-Industrial aesthetic: heavy recoil, mechanical actions, no smart-links, no digital scopes. Manufactured ammunition is expensive. Scrap ammo is common in the Strata. Energy cells require regular charging or replacement.

P.A.C.E. STANDARD ISSUE — PATROL AND RIOT CONTROL Aesthetic: Saxe Blue Steel, mass-produced, bureaucratic. The Peacekeeper-10 is the standard sidearm: a 10mm semi-automatic pistol, reliable, and found in every patrol officer's holster. The Arc-Stick is a stun baton delivering 50,000 volts with a distinctive crackling sound — non-lethal and the first tool reached for in most street situations. The Enforcer-12 is a pump-action shotgun with a deeply intimidating racking sound, capable of cycling between beanbag rounds, standard slugs, EMP shells, and incendiary rounds. Armor: the Riot-Shell is ceramic plates over Kevlar, torso protection only, weak to armor-piercing rounds. The Patrol Uniform is reinforced fabric that is stab-resistant but carries no hard plates.

V.E.I.N. OPERATIONAL LOADOUT — INFECTION CONTAINMENT AND BLACK OPS Aesthetic: Matte Charcoal, silent, clinical. The Needler fires gas-compressed darts in complete silence — a soft hiss. Dart types: yellow sedative for capture, red neurotoxin for termination, blue tracker for marking targets for later collection. The HF-Scalpel is a high-frequency vibrating blade that cuts through crystal cleanly with a high-pitched whine — essential for field amputation of Etched limbs. The Cauterizer is a heated blade designed for rapid field amputation; it cuts and seals simultaneously. Armor: the Specter Coat is a ballistic trench coat with graphene lining that resists bladed weapons and small-caliber firearms. Gear: the Tri-Lens Visor carries three red lenses — thermal imaging, night vision, and an Etching scanner that reveals subsurface crystal growth invisible to the naked eye.

MYRMIDON SOLUTIONS HEAVY ASSAULT Aesthetic: Insectoid, matte black, faceless, overwhelming. The Hellfire-Thrower is a backpack-mounted flamethrower delivering sticky napalm. It melts Aggregates effectively and produces a characteristic roaring whoosh. The Acid-Sprayer fires a hose of corrosive gel that dissolves crystal on contact with a sizzling hiss — serious friendly fire risk in close quarters. The Swarm-Gun is a rotary shotgun firing full-auto buckshot; it is simply deafening. Armor: the Drone Carapace is full chitin-weave plating that is near-impervious to small arms fire, though extremely heavy. The Hive-Helm is a faceless black dome displaying HUD text-scroll orders — no voice communication, no facial expression, entirely terrifying.

CIVILIAN LEGAL WEAPONS Full-auto weapons are prohibited for civilian ownership. Armor-piercing ammunition requires a permit. Energy weapons are military-only. The Defender-6 is a .38 special revolver and the standard home defense choice. The Homestead Shotgun is a double-barrel break-action that requires no permit for home use. Civilian armor is limited to the Stab Vest: civilian-grade protection that stops knives and low-caliber rounds, thin enough to wear under clothing.

BLACK MARKET AND FREELANCER EQUIPMENT Aesthetic: rust, duct tape, modified industrial, no serial numbers. Acquired through back-alley dealers, Rust-Bucket Outpost, and Miyabayashi fences. No warranty. The Kinetic Driver is a magnetic nail rifle that fires iron spikes with a distinctive THRUM-CRACK sound — ammo is literal scrap metal. The Thermal Lance is a mining spear with a plasma tip and an explosive fuel tank — high risk, high reward, do not drop it. The Grinder is a sawed-off .44 magnum holding only three rounds but sounding like a thunderclap when it fires — cheap and completely untraceable. The Slag-Chucker is a junk shotgun that fires debris; it will jam, and it may injure the shooter. Black market armor options: the Dust Coat is a Kevlar-scrap-lined coat that might stop a knife and is standard Strata wear. The Respirator filters Silica-Dust and requires fresh filters every 48 hours — without it, the Strata will kill you. Black market gear: the Deck is a brick-sized cyberdeck with a green CRT screen and cassette storage for analog hacking. The Geiger-Clicker is a Silica-Dust sensor that ticks faster near contamination — loud ticking means run. The Patch Kit contains synth-skin spray, coagulant, and painkiller stims with no anesthetic.

AGGREGATE COUNTERMEASURES — SUMMARY Effective: flamethrowers, acid, HF blades, heavy AP rounds to the Core, and explosives against smaller variants. Ineffective: pistol-caliber rounds, electric weapons, sedatives of any kind.

10. #10Transportation

Keys: crawler, transport, bus, truck, ride, motorcycle, car, vehicle, drive, van, bike, chase, convoy, taxi, skiff

    TRANSPORTATION IN THE TRI-CITY ALLIANCE

TECHNICAL AESTHETIC All vehicles operate on the Diesel-Punk aesthetic: analog gauges, touchscreen & digital GPS, physical maps, loud combustion engines. Fuel is refined Aggregate cells sold at licensed stations in cities. Black market cells are cheaper but chemically unstable.

CITY VEHICLES — CIVILIAN Sedans are boxy manual-transmission vehicles and a status symbol in Heliopolis. They are rare in Nu Knos where parking is impossible. Motorcycles are the dominant personal transport in Nu Knos — loud two-stroke engines weaving through perpetual gridlock. Taxi cabs are yellow, dented, metered in Obols, and the drivers know everything about everything; a Nu Knos institution.

Public transit: the metro system runs underground trains for 2 Obols per ride — crowded, reliable enough, and a pickpocket paradise during rush hour. Trams are Troy's specialty, surface-level rail for workers, slow but dependable. Diesel buses run only in Nu Knos, unreliable schedules, always standing room.

Commercial traffic includes box trucks delivering goods within city limits (Aten logos on nearly every one) and heavily armored fuel tankers requiring mandatory P.A.C.E. escort — they are high-value targets.

P.A.C.E. VEHICLES White and blue livery, visible sirens, reinforced but not military-grade. The Patrol Cruiser is a reinforced sedan with radio, sirens, and bars on the rear windows. The Riot Van is an armored transport holding 8 officers with a water cannon mount and tear gas dispensers. The Rapid Response vehicle is an unmarked black SUV, faster than the standard cruiser, with an armed trunk — deployed only for serious calls.

V.E.I.N. VEHICLES Matte black, unmarked, tinted windows, silent engines. The Sweeper Van is a windowless vehicle with a medical interior for transporting infected individuals to quarantine — citizens make a point of not looking at it. The Pursuit Car is a sleek black sedan with an upgraded engine, quiet operation, used for extractions and surveillance tails. The Cleanser Truck carries an incinerator unit on wheels for burning evidence and bodies — identified by the chemical smell it leaves behind.

MYRMIDON VEHICLES Insectoid aesthetic, matte black, tank-like. The Scarab APC holds 12 troops, carries a mounted turret, and is sealed against Silica-Dust. The Centipede Crawler is a segmented treaded transport that can cross any terrain and serves as a mobile command post for extended operations. The Hornet Gunship is a VTOL aircraft — rare, carrying autocannons and rockets, deployed only in response to Leviathan-class Aggregates.

STRATA VEHICLES — WASTELAND TRAVEL All wasteland vehicles must handle glass terrain, survive Silica-Dust infiltration, and carry defensive capability with some self-repair ability.

The Sand-Skiff is a hover vehicle using repulsor-lift technology, carrying 2 to 4 passengers and light cargo. It is fast, maneuverable, and glides over glass shards without damage, but it is completely exposed, has no armor, consumes fuel rapidly, and produces a loud high-pitched hum. Used for scout runs, quick courier jobs, and outrunning threats.

The Dune-Crawler is a treaded vehicle with an enclosed sealed cabin for 4 to 6 passengers and heavy cargo. It is armored, reliable, and can mount weapons, but it is slow, loud, and the treads require constant maintenance. Used for cargo hauls, scavenger expeditions, and long-distance travel.

The Nomad Rig is a converted truck functioning as a mobile home — living quarters, workshop, and storage combined. Self-sufficient enough to survive weeks in the Strata, it is very slow and requires a crew to operate. Used by wasteland traders and nomadic families.

The War-Wagon is an armored convoy vehicle functioning as a gun platform: crew of three, a gunner position, and ammo storage. Heavy armor, mounted weapons, and significant intimidation factor offset by extreme fuel consumption, obvious targeting priority, and expense.

BLACK MARKET VEHICLES Aesthetic: rust, mismatched parts, duct tape, personality. The Frankenbike is a welded-together motorcycle — unreliable but fast when it works, and cheap. The Junker is any car held together by optimism — it will break down; carry spare parts. Rust-Bucket Specials are custom builds from Rust-Bucket Outpost: unique, questionable safety, with stories attached.

INTERCITY TRAVEL There are no roads between cities. The Strata is impassable by ground convoy at any practical scale. All intercity travel goes by rail. See the Infrastructure entry for full Tri-Rail Network details.

VEHICLE SOUNDS — QUICK REFERENCE City traffic: honking, engine idle, tram bells, motorcycle buzz. Strata convoy: treads grinding, repulsor hum, distant engine roar, radio crackle. Chase sequence: revving engines, screeching tires, gunfire, shattering glass.

11. #11Medical

Keys: cure, ripper, injury, hospital, doctor, surgery, etching, medical, infected, drug, medicine, heal, wound, treatment, nurse, clinic, amputation

MEDICINE AND HEALTHCARE IN THE TRI-CITY ALLIANCE

TECHNICAL AESTHETIC Medical equipment runs on analog monitors, manual defibrillators, and surgical steel. There is no nanotech. Healthcare is privatized in Heliopolis, rationed in Troy, and operating primarily through black market channels in Nu Knos. It is expensive everywhere.

MINERALIZATION TREATMENT — THE TIME WINDOW

Stage 0 treatment — the golden window: exposure within the last 30 minutes. No visible symptoms; particles are present but haven't bonded to tissue. A Chelation Injection administered immediately flushes the particles with a 95% success rate. After 30 minutes, the particles bond and this option closes.

Stage 1 treatment — Early Etching at 30 minutes to 6 hours: faint geometric lines under the skin, localized heat, itching that intensifies to burning. Aggressive chelation therapy at a clinic has a 60% success rate and costs 500 or more Obols. It leaves permanent scarring. If the infection is localized to a limb, amputation stops spread entirely — the most common choice for Roughs who cannot afford therapy.

Stage 2 treatment — Active Mineralization at 6 to 24 hours: visible crystal growth, glowing violet veins, tissue hardening, extreme pain. No cure. Suppressant drugs buy weeks of continued life — not recovery. Experimental Aten therapies exist; survival rates are classified and the waiting list is controlled by corporate gatekeeping.

Stage 3 — Terminal at 24 hours and beyond: bone eruption, organ calcification, fading consciousness. No treatment. Euthanasia protocol is the only legally authorized response. The patient is clinically dead; what remains is becoming an Aggregate. V.E.I.N. handles disposal and incineration.

    MEDICAL FACILITIES

Heliopolis General Hospital: clean, well-equipped, extraordinarily expensive, oriented toward Polished clientele. Will report any Etching findings to V.E.I.N. automatically.

Troy Worker Clinics: basic care with long waits, mandatory Etching checks on entry, treatment prioritized by ability to work rather than ability to pay — functional but grim.

Ripper-Docs: operate in back alleys and behind the counters of Nu Knos noodle shops. No questions asked, no records kept. Services include amputation, gray-market implant installation, suppressant refills, and bullet removal. Quality varies wildly — reputation is everything. Ask around before you sit down.

Field Medics: Myrmidon combat medics and scavenger crew patches — they cut fast, seal fast, and move. No bedside manner, no time for it.

DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT The Etching Scanner is a handheld UV-light device that reveals subsurface crystal growth invisible to the naked eye. V.E.I.N. standard issue; black market copies exist. The Bloodwork Kit is a manual centrifuge that tests for silicate contamination with results in 20 minutes. The Bone Densitometer detects early calcium-silicate conversion and is clinic-level equipment.

EMERGENCY SUPPLIES The Chelation Injector is a single-use syringe that flushes Silica particles — 200 Obols on the street, expires quickly, carry one if you go outside the walls. The Tourniquet is standard issue and stops blood flow while slowing infection spread to a limb, buying time for amputation. Coagulant Foam is a spray can that seals wounds quickly for 50 Obols — it stings. Burn Gel treats thermal weapon injuries, common in Strata encounters, and cools and numbs on application.

SURGICAL TOOLS The Cauterizer Blade is a heated scalpel that cuts and seals simultaneously, used in field amputations — V.E.I.N.'s signature field tool. The Bone Saw comes manual or powered, for when the limb has to go, with no anesthetic available in field conditions. Synth-Skin Grafts are lab-grown skin sheets that cover wounds and stumps, expensive but critical for preventing secondary infection.

DRUGS AND CHEMICALS Calciblocker is the name-brand suppressant that slows Stage-2 mineralization. Daily injection, costs 600 Obols per dose, buys weeks to months but is not a cure. Ite-Away is the street name for bootleg suppressant — half the price, half the purity, might work or might accelerate progression; field reports are inconsistent. Numb-Sticks are injectable military-grade painkillers — effective and fast, but addictive. Bite-Down oral tablets are weaker and common at 10 Obols per pack. Wake-Up is a single-use adrenaline shot that revives from shock with heart-risk if overused. Dust — not a medical drug, but ubiquitous — is a refined silica compound sold recreationally: euphoric, extremely addictive, and clinically documented to accelerate latent Etching progression. It is the city's quiet epidemic.

Silica-Scrub decontamination wash is used at checkpoints and clinics to remove surface Silica-Dust — stings and smells of bleach. Purge Mist is an aerosol for clearing Silica-Dust from the lungs after exposure, unpleasant but necessary.

    KEY PROCEDURES

Field Amputation: used when Stage-1 or early Stage-2 infection is confined to a limb and no clinic is accessible. Tourniquet above the infection line, cut fast, cauterize the stump, foam and wrap, monitor for shock. Survival rate is high if done correctly; infection and shock are the primary killers.

Chelation Therapy: used at Stage-0 or Stage-1 within the time window. IV drip of chelating agents binds to silica particles and flushes them through the kidneys over 4 to 6 hours. Painful. Requires bed rest, hydration, and monitoring for relapse.

Euthanasia Protocol: confirmed Stage-3. Authorized only by V.E.I.N. operators or licensed physicians — performing it without authorization is illegal. Cardiac injection, immediate. Body incinerated to prevent Aggregate formation. Families are rarely present. There is nothing left to bury.

12. #12Public Security

Keys: P.A.C.E., security, officer, cop, enforcement, constable, VEIN, arrest, PACE, patrol, ministry, inspector, police, operator, V.E.I.N., law

    PUBLIC SECURITY — P.A.C.E. AND V.E.I.N.

THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SECURITY Also known as Public Security, The Ministry, or MoP. Headquarters: the Citadel, on the Heliopolis-Troy border. Motto: "Order in the Streets. Silence in the Stone." Founded on Day Zero of the Mineralization, 80 years ago.

The Ministry operates on a two-lane doctrine: P.A.C.E. handles citizens, crime, and civil order; V.E.I.N. handles infection, anomalies, and classified operations. In practice, both are underfunded, understaffed, and compromised by Lineage influence. The Lineages exercise more real power than the Ministry in nearly every district.

P.A.C.E. — PUBLIC ALLIANCE CIVIL ENFORCEMENT Role: urban policing, criminal investigation, crisis response. Jurisdiction: citizens, crime, civil order. Visual identity: modular Saxe-blue armor, holographic badge identifiers, a bureaucratic and overworked institutional culture that is equal parts idealism and cynicism.

Ranks ascend from Constable (patrol officer, traffic, petty crime, first on scene), to Sergeant (field supervisor, leads squads), to Inspector (investigator, handles murders and corporate theft cases), to Captain (precinct commander, manages district resources), to Commissioner (city-level administrator, political appointment).

Standard tactics favor patrols, checkpoints, and non-lethal force whenever possible. The Aggregate Protocol is explicit: lock the perimeter, evacuate civilians, call V.E.I.N., and do not engage — P.A.C.E. officers are not equipped for Aggregate containment and leadership has learned this lesson the hard way.

Culturally, P.A.C.E. officers take pride in being first responders who protect ordinary citizens. Resentment toward V.E.I.N. is widespread and barely concealed — better gear, better clearance, better press coverage, while P.A.C.E. holds lines and fills out the paperwork afterward. Corruption in Nu Knos precincts is significant; Miyabayashi bribes flow freely, some officers look away, and some have no real choice in the matter.

Equipment: Peacekeeper-10 sidearm, Arc-Stick stun baton, Enforcer-12 shotgun, Riot-Shell armor, patrol cruisers, riot vans.

V.E.I.N. — VIRAL ETCHING INVESTIGATION NETWORK Role: infection containment, Aggregate neutralization, Strata operations, artifact recovery. Jurisdiction: Mineralization events, anomalies, Hot Zones, and anything classified. Visual identity: matte charcoal bodysuits with maroon accents, full-face filtration masks, the Tri-Lens visor with its distinctive glowing red optics. Vibe: clinical, elite, secretive, effectively above the law.

Ranks ascend from Field Analyst (scout, runs scanners, reports threats), to Operator (combat specialist, trained to kill Aggregates), to Arbiter (squad leader, authorized to call purge operations on infected zones), to Operations Chief (regional director, coordinates multi-squad actions), to The Director (identity classified, answers only to the Lineages — maybe).

V.E.I.N. tactics are surgical: enter Hot Zones, neutralize threats, extract data or specimens. Containment operations deploy barriers and quarantine protocols, removing civilians whether they are willing or not. Cleanup operations incinerate evidence, silence witnesses when deemed necessary, and produce an official story.

Culturally, V.E.I.N. agents see themselves as the scalpel that cuts out the rot — doing what P.A.C.E. cannot or will not. Compartmentalization is total; even Operators rarely see the full picture of any given operation. Rumors circulate endlessly about human experimentation, Aggregate weaponization, and undisclosed Aten connections. Nothing has been proven.

Equipment: Needler dart gun, HF-Scalpel, Tri-Lens visor, Specter ballistic trench coat, Sweeper vans, VTOL dropships for major incidents.

THE P.A.C.E. — V.E.I.N. DYNAMIC Officially cooperative with joint protocols on paper and professional courtesy in public. In practice, mutual contempt barely hidden behind institutional politeness. P.A.C.E. officers describe V.E.I.N. as arrogant lab-rats who show up, take credit, and leave them with the paperwork. V.E.I.N. operators consider P.A.C.E. to be clumsy, leaky with information, and an obstruction to real work.

In joint operations, the protocol assigns P.A.C.E. to secure perimeters and evacuate civilians while V.E.I.N. enters the Hot Zone. The reality is that P.A.C.E. holds the line and takes first casualties, while V.E.I.N. claims the success or buries the failure. Constables remember the names of colleagues V.E.I.N. left behind. V.E.I.N. does not.

13. #13Lineages

Keys: Carrigan, elite, Miyabayashi, politics, oligarchy, lineage, Astraeus, power, clan, family, noble

THE THREE LINEAGES — THE OLIGARCHY OF THE TRI-CITY ALLIANCE

The three Lineages are the de facto government of the Alliance. Elected officials exist as a performance of democracy; the Lineages control them. The three families need each other to maintain stability, and they hate that they need each other. If one falls, the structural balance collapses.

THE ASTRAEUS FAMILY — HELIOPOLITAN Headquarters: The Solar Needle. Leader: Yuliyana Kova Astraeus, Prime Architect, who communicates almost exclusively through holographic proxies and is rarely seen in person.

Public philosophy: progress through innovation, transcending human limitations. Private philosophy: the Mineralization is not a disease — it is uncontrolled evolution that should be harnessed, not cured. The contradiction: they preach transcendence but are obsessed with their own mortality. Bloodline purity matters more than their public messaging acknowledges.

What they control: the energy grid through Aten Heavy Industries, all media output, genetic research, and barrier technology. Their leverage is absolute — turn off the Helios-Cells and the other two cities go dark within hours. Their weakness is equally absolute: no military force, no street presence, entirely dependent on others for physical security and industrial labor.

Culture: innovation, aesthetic perfection, and emotional restraint are values. Taboos include physical labor, visible aging, and touching anything "unpolished." Fracture points exist — younger Astraeus members secretly fund Nu Knos artists and reject their family's isolation, and Lysander's grip on the generation below him is slipping.

Aesthetic: white and gold synthetic silk over exo-frames, personal drone swarms floating as accessories, sterile beauty, and an unsettling politeness that never reaches warmth.

THE MIYABAYASHI CLAN — NU KNOS Headquarters: The Red-Flower Teahouse, hidden in the entertainment district. Leader: Lady Kaoru, Oyabun, who is middle-aged with gray-streaked hair, scarred hands from her early years, elegant kimonos, and a soft voice that has survived three assassination attempts. She knows who sent each one. She is waiting.

Public philosophy: protectors of the forgotten, providing order where law fails. Private philosophy: power flows to those who control the margins — the Alliance needs a shadow to function. The contradiction: they claim to protect the slums while profiting from their vices, and they hate the system they are essential to maintaining.

What they control: black markets, smuggling routes, the vice trade, information networks, and unofficial justice in lower Nu Knos. Their leverage: they know everyone's secrets, and P.A.C.E. tolerates them because the alternative is chaos without structure. Their weakness: no legitimate standing, one serious crackdown away from open war, and internal succession tensions growing.

Culture: loyalty, reciprocity, silence, and the understanding that debts must always be paid. Taboos include betraying family, involving civilians in Clan business, and talking to V.E.I.N. under any circumstances. Tradition: the Glass Oath — members carry fragile ghost-glass weapons to symbolize how easily honor shatters. Fracture points: younger members want legitimacy and reform; hardliners resist any change; Feramono face low-level discrimination within the Clan despite their demonstrated value.

Aesthetic: tactical kimonos, UV-reactive tattoos invisible in normal light, neon alleyways, karaoke bars that go silent when a stranger enters, smiles that do not reach the eyes.

THE CARRIGAN LEGACY — TROY Headquarters: The Anvil, a fortress-factory built directly into the outer wall. Leader: Silas Carrigan, Iron General, who lost an arm to an Aggregate and refused a prosthetic for years, wearing the loss as a credential before eventually accepting a heavy industrial replacement.

Public philosophy: strength through labor, the wall protects all, every citizen is a soldier. Private philosophy: the Carrigan family bleeds so others can play politics — when the barriers fail, only Troy stands. The contradiction: they preach labor equality while the family lives in comfort, and they despise the elite while craving their respect.

What they control: heavy industry, the rail network, wall maintenance, weapons manufacturing, and crystal mining operations. Their leverage: without Troy there are no bullets, no trains, and no walls. Their weakness: no soft power whatsoever, terrible at politics, and an economy entirely dependent on the other two cities buying what Troy produces.

Culture: hard work, endurance, directness, and the understanding that scars are credentials. Taboos include laziness, excessive displays of wealth, and complaining without offering a solution. Tradition: the Forge-Mark — heirs must brand themselves or build a weapon from scrap to prove they have earned adulthood. Fracture points: workers resent Carrigan privilege, union tensions are rising, and Silas's children actively disagree on Troy's future with no heir named.

Aesthetic: industrial formal dress, heavy coats, steel-toed boots, jewelry made from bolts and washers, callused handshakes, and respect that must be earned in sweat.

LINEAGE RELATIONS Astraeus and Carrigan: economic dependence with mutual contempt. Astraeus automation research actively threatens Carrigan labor force, a tension that grows worse with each Aten announcement. Astraeus and Miyabayashi: publicly condemned, privately contracted — Miyabayashi moves Astraeus secrets through channels that don't exist on paper. Both hold leverage over the other that has not yet been used. Miyabayashi and Carrigan: grudging mutual respect. Carrigan laborers buy Clan goods; some Miyabayashi operatives are former Troy military. A genuine alliance between these two would threaten Astraeus dominance directly, which is precisely why Astraeus works to keep that alliance from forming.

14. #14Corporations

Keys: Carrigan, Decibel Coffee, Nite-Owl, Aten, K-Hertz, Jackal, Chronos, Neon-Dragon, Red-Lotus, Corporations, The Market

CORPORATIONS AND BRANDS OF THE TRI-CITY ALLIANCE

The Alliance economy runs on hyper-consumerism and brand loyalty. All transactions use Obols (⟠). The following corporations shape daily life for ordinary citizens.

    LIFESTYLE AND CONSUMER TECHNOLOGY

Chronos-Systems is the dominant consumer electronics brand, headquartered in Heliopolis. Slogan: "Fidelity Forever." Products include Walkman-style tape players, high-fidelity headphones, and retro gaming consoles. The aesthetic is Sony circa the 1990s: sleek brushed silver casings, orange foam ear pads. The cool kids wear Chronos.

Jackal-Express is the logistics and delivery corporation based in Nu Knos. Slogan: "We Run. You Rest." Specializes in last-mile delivery and inter-city courier services. The workforce is predominantly Feramono, valued for speed and agility. Couriers wear bright yellow jackets and ride modified hover-scooters with a street-punk aesthetic.

    FOOD AND DRINK

Decibel Coffee Co. operates across both Heliopolis and Nu Knos. Slogan: "Amplify Your Morning." Known for jet-black espresso and canned Boss-Coffee sold from vending machines. The interiors are warm and jazzy, designed as refuges from the rain — they smell of roasted beans and wet concrete. The Starbucks of the apocalypse.

K-Hertz Burger operates locations in Nu Knos and Troy. Slogan: "High Frequency Flavor." Menu staples include the Bass-Drop Burger (double patty), Static-Fries (spicy), and Neon-Soda. The interiors are neon-drenched retro diners: greasy, salty, and deeply satisfying after a long shift.

Neon-Dragon Noodles is an instant food and street stall brand operating as a Miyabayashi subsidiary. Their cup ramen and spicy miso broth are the staple diet of gamers, hackers, and P.A.C.E. officers on overnight patrol. Cheap, spicy, and available in 50 flavors.

Nite-Owl Mart is the 24/7 convenience store chain — Nu Knos's konbini. Bright lights and hot bento boxes are a beacon of safety at any hour. Products range from onigiri and vitamin drinks to batteries and umbrellas. Staff are usually bored teenagers or tired Feramono on overnight shifts.

    HEAVY INDUSTRY

Aten Heavy Industries is the energy and biotech mega-conglomerate backed by the Astraeus Family, headquartered in Heliopolis. Products: Helios Cells (the universal battery powering 90% of Alliance technology), Medical Auto-Docs, and cybernetic prosthetic limbs. The aesthetic is clean white ceramic and gold — it looks like an Apple Store crossed with a prosthetics clinic. Aten also manufactures the Aegis barrier systems that keep the cities alive. Their dark secret: tech exported to the Strata is engineered with planned obsolescence to force dependency.

Carrigan Dynamics is the defense and transport corporation based in Troy. Products: armored trains, P.A.C.E. cruisers, and mining mechs. The aesthetic is gunmetal grey, rivets, and hazard stripes — built to last, not to look impressive.

    ENTERTAINMENT

Red-Lotus Entertainment is the media and leisure corporation based in Nu Knos. Venues include arcades, karaoke bars, and bathhouses. They run the idol concert circuit and retro-game tournament leagues. Loud, colorful, and genuinely fun — one of the few institutions in the Alliance that operates without an obvious political agenda.

15. #15Minor Factions

Keys: Minor Factions, Prism Order, Cults, PMC, Mercenaries, Archivists, Echo-Front, Gear-Hearts, Gangs, Myrmidon

MINOR FACTIONS OF THE TRI-CITY ALLIANCE

These organizations occupy the spaces between official power structures. They are independent operators, wildcards, and the reality that the Lineages and Ministry cannot fully control.

MYRMIDON SOLUTIONS — PRIVATE MILITARY CORPORATION Headquarters: The Iron-Hive, Troy outskirts. Slogan: "Problem Solved." Services include nest extermination, corporate asset extraction, convoy escort, and deniable black operations. Clients include Aten Heavy Industries, Lineage black-ops divisions, and anyone with sufficient Obols. Reputation: effective, expensive, no questions asked, no survivors left behind.

Relations with other factions: V.E.I.N. and Myrmidon share mutual hatred — V.E.I.N. views them as dangerous amateurs, Myrmidon views V.E.I.N. as corporate lapdogs. P.A.C.E. considers their operations technically illegal, but they are tolerated because the Lineages provide cover. Many operators are ex-Troy military, maintaining a recruitment pipeline through Carrigan channels.

Culture: faceless by design. No names — only callsigns. The helmet is the person. Betray the Hive and disappear. Rumors circulate of neural conditioning and pain suppression implants that make operators function at the edge of what is recognizably human. Aesthetic: black chitin armor, insectoid helmets with no visible face, no identifying markings, movement described as a swarm rather than a unit.

THE PRISM ORDER — DOOMSDAY CULT Base of operations: hidden shrines scattered throughout the Strata, plus cells operating in all three cities. Core belief: the Mineralization is Ascension, Aggregates are next-stage humanity, and flesh is a prison to be escaped.

Practices: self-infection through micro-doses of Silica-Dust to grow "sacred" crystals on the skin — devotion is measured by visible crystal growth. Sabotage of city air filters. Smuggling Aggregate shards into urban populations. Contaminating water supplies. Recruitment targets the desperate and the dying; Stage-2 patients who have been told their condition is terminal are particularly vulnerable to promises of transcendence rather than death.

V.E.I.N. priority target — cells are difficult to root out because true believers do not break under interrogation. Hierarchy: the Faceted (leaders with significant crystal growth, considered holy), and the Clouded (impure initiates still mostly human). Ritual practice includes glass hymns and the Final Walk — voluntary Stage-3 transformation as the ultimate expression of faith. Aesthetic: refractive robes, glowing infection veins, serene smiles, and an unsettling calm that makes them more frightening than aggression would.

GEAR-HEART TRIBE — BOSOZOKU BIKER GANG Turf: Nu Knos highways and the Analog Strip. Composition: exclusively Feramono youth. Not a criminal enterprise by self-definition — they see themselves as survivors protecting their own.

Role: courier runs, street-level smuggling, and providing physical protection to Feramono-owned businesses against extortion. Their stance is openly hostile to how the Lineages treat Feramono as pets or tools rather than people. Code: never rat, never abandon a rider, outsiders pay toll or bleed.

Relations: complicated with Miyabayashi — some members work Clan jobs, others flatly refuse, and Lady Kaoru respects their independence enough not to force the issue. P.A.C.E. has ongoing friction with them — street chases, some officers are bought, others are genuinely hostile. Among ordinary Feramono youth, they are heroes; to Feramono elders, they are an embarrassment.

Culture: loud and visible by deliberate choice. They refuse invisibility — the noise is the point. Bikes are identity, not just transportation; they are built and modified personally and carry their owner's history. Initiation requires building a bike from scrap, winning a race, and having the ears notched. Aesthetic: neon accent lighting on bikes, animal ear aesthetic modifications, leather and chrome, engines that sound like screaming.

THE ARCHIVISTS — INFORMATION BROKERS AND HISTORIANS Base: The Library, Undertown — location changes, they find you. Ideology: data is sacred, history must survive.

Services: pre-collapse records, corporate secrets, government files, blackmail packages, clean identity documents, forged credentials, erased records, and physical dead-drop courier services for information that cannot exist digitally.

Relations: strictly neutral by survival necessity — they sell to all sides and have no political allegiance. V.E.I.N. wants their archives badly; the Archivists maintain an insurance policy of pre-staged data leaks that would activate automatically if raided, which has so far deterred direct action. The Miyabayashi Clan are regular clients using the dead-drop service, and professional respect exists between the organizations.

Internal culture: codenames only, cells are compartmentalized, no single member knows the full roster. Physical preservation is paramount — tape reels, magnetic storage, physical books, anything that cannot be corrupted by a network attack. Price is always information for information, with favors preferred over Obols. They always collect.

16. #16Nu Knos

Keys: Analog Strip, Irides Warren, Sector 01, Nu Knos, Undertown, Rebar-Works, Sector 1

NU KNOS — SECTOR 01, THE IRIDES WARREN Ruled by the Miyabayashi Clan and their shadow-syndicates. Aesthetic: high-fidelity urban density, vertical sprawl, cassette futurism. Atmosphere: perpetual rain, analog hum, lived-in warmth.

VISUAL IDENTITY Nu Knos is dense, vertical, and never quiet — but it is not a slum. It is a neighborhood that grew upward instead of outward, packed tight with life and held together by habit. Apartment blocks are retrofitted with visible industrial piping, laundry lines cross between buildings, and neon signage makes the wet pavement glow pink-orange after dark. Power lines drape overhead in heavy bundles. The sky is mostly blocked by elevated walkways and upper floors, but what replaces it is atmosphere — warm light from shop fronts, the hum of electronics, and the constant background noise of a city that does not know how to be still. People genuinely like living here. The ramen is good, the rent is survivable, and the Nite-Owl on the corner is open at 3 AM.

The Miyabayashi Clan controls the black market, nightlife, and most things the government pretends do not exist, but for the average person their influence feels more like "the neighborhood runs smoothly" than "the mob is watching."

DISTRICTS The Analog Strip is the commercial heart and safest spot in Nu Knos. Video rental stores, CRT repair shops, family-owned diners, and electronics stalls where plastic cassette cases click shut behind the counter. Feels like the late 1990s frozen in amber. The rail station at its center is the main transit hub.

The Rebar-Works is the bad part — a vertical slum zone built on the skeleton of an abandoned construction project. Shanties welded onto unfinished skyscrapers, chain-link bridges swinging over open drops. The sound is metal groaning in the wind. You come here because you cannot afford anywhere else or because you do not want to be found.

Undertown is the flooded sub-level, built on pontoons and old subway cars. The water glows faintly from chemical runoff. Ripper-docs, Dust dealers, and Miyabayashi enforcers keeping their version of order. If the Rebar-Works is where you end up when broke, Undertown is where you end up when desperate.

SENSORY PROFILE Smell: frying soy-oil, wet concrete, stale tobacco, and the sharp tang of high-voltage electronics. Sound: commuter trains rattling overhead, muffled City-Pop bleeding from open shop doors, arcade cabinets chiming down the block, someone laughing too loud at a ramen counter, and the ever-present low hum of a million transformers. Texture: everything is slick with rain or gritty with soot; walls are covered in layers of peeling posters and graffiti.

Population density is extreme. Streets run shoulder-to-shoulder during rush hour. Drones weave between pedestrians delivering hot food. Feramono couriers sprint across rooftops on invisible routes.

17. #17Heliopolitan

Keys: The Halo, Heliopolitan, Zenith Square, Silicon Spire, P.A.C.E. HQ, The Citadel, P.A.C.E. Central Command, Astraeus, The Promenade

HELIOPOLITAN — SECTOR 02, THE SILICON SPIRE Ruled by the Astraeus Family and Aten Heavy Industries. Aesthetic: Solar-Baroque, modern metropolitan, gilded analog. Atmosphere: clean, busy, aspirational.

VISUAL IDENTITY Heliopolitan is a vertical metropolis — dense, busy, and genuinely impressive. Wide boulevards, towering commercial high-rises with seamless white ceramic facades, holographic signage in crisp gold and blue, and not a single piece of litter on the ground. Think Shinjuku's commercial energy crossed with Singapore's urban planning and Shenzhen's tech-forward skyline, wrapped in white ceramic and solar-gold accents. The towers look grown rather than built, curves suggesting something almost biological. Streets are packed with commuters, shopping districts hum with foot traffic, and department stores run sales across massive holographic displays that ripple across entire building facades. Technology is boutique analog — interfaces hidden behind marble touch-plates and sapphire switches. No exposed wires. No visible infrastructure.

Step off the main boulevards and the pace changes. Residential neighborhoods are quieter — well-maintained mid-rise apartments, balcony gardens, small neighborhood parks. The kind of area where you hear someone practicing piano through an open window and the convenience store owner remembers your usual order. People raise families here and genuinely enjoy where they live.

The Astraeus Family and Aten Heavy Industries run everything — energy, media, infrastructure, genetic research. For the average person, that means the lights always work, trains are punctual, and vending machines are stocked. The control is real but woven into the convenience.

DISTRICTS Zenith Square is the city center and commercial showcase — massive holographic displays, upscale retail, open plazas with engineered greenery, and foot traffic that never lets up. Cafe Solstice serves coffee at 500 Obols and people actually pay it.

The Promenade is the residential backbone of Heliopolitan. Tree-lined streets, clean mid-rise apartment complexes with balcony gardens, neighborhood cafes with regulars who know each other by name, and small parks where kids play after school. Quiet without being sterile — most citizens actually live here, not in Zenith Square's glass towers.

The Citadel is P.A.C.E. Central Command — a stark grey reinforced concrete slab that deliberately contrasts with the white city. Houses the Central Armory, Holding Cells, and Tactical Response mech-hangars.

The Halo is the upper residential ring for the ultra-elite — a floating orbital structure tethered above the cloud layer. Automated defense systems handle trespassers. Most Heliopolitan residents have never been up there either.

SENSORY PROFILE Smell: clean air with faint ozone, engineered florals, expensive coffee, and the subtle warmth of electronics running perfectly. Sound: steady foot traffic on clean pavement, transit chimes, holographic advertisements cycling through jingles, and conversation at a volume that somehow never feels like a crowd. Texture: smooth, cold, and hard — marble, glass, ceramic.

18. #18Troy

Keys: Carrigan, The Foundry, Sector 3, Sector 03, Slagyard, Iron Bastion, Troy, Port Ferro, Bastion-Block

TROY — SECTOR 03, THE IRON BASTION Ruled by the Carrigan Legacy and the Union Foremen. Aesthetic: brutalist concrete, heavy industry, diesel-punk. Atmosphere: perpetual smog, seismic vibration, blue-collar pride.

VISUAL IDENTITY Troy is an industrial powerhouse first and a city second, but that does not mean it is miserable — the city was designed around the job and everything else grew in to fill the gaps. Massive factory complexes dominate the skyline, cargo-trains rumble through at all hours, and the air carries a faint taste of diesel and iron. But between the foundries and freight yards there are neighborhoods, drinking halls, street food vendors, and parks built on repurposed industrial lots where kids play after school.

Architecture is brutalist and blocky — reinforced ferro-concrete buildings engineered for durability, not aesthetics. No decorative windows, just vents and thick walls that could survive artillery. Technology is heavy analog — giant iron levers, pressure gauges, punch-card readers. Interfaces designed for gloved hands in rough conditions. Troy's philosophy is efficiency: production comes first, everything else is organized around keeping production moving. But organized around production does not mean joyless — the rec district opens when the shift whistle blows, drinking halls have the first round poured on schedule, and street food carts park outside factory gates at clocking-out time like clockwork.

DISTRICTS Port Ferro is the logistics hub — a colossal docking bay for armored cargo-trains and heavy-lift airships. Shipping containers stacked ten high, foghorns cutting through chemical mist, cranes swinging overhead, and the screech of metal wheels on tracks.

The Foundry is the industrial core — kilometers of conveyor belts and robotic arms producing riot shields, artillery shells, and refined Helios Cells. The hydraulic presses thud in a rhythm like a heartbeat — the pulse of Troy.

Bastion-Block is worker housing — rows of identical bunker-like apartment blocks, functional and no-frills, run on shift schedules and wake-up sirens. Communal cafeterias, laundry lines strung between buildings, and deep solidarity among residents. Not glamorous, but rent is subsidized and nobody sleeps on the street.

The Slagyard is Troy's recreation and nightlife district, built on a decommissioned rail yard. Drinking halls with long communal tables, street food stalls selling skewered meat and fried dough, a fighting ring that is technically unlicensed, and an open-air market where off-duty workers sell handmade goods and scrap art. Loud, greasy, and the closest thing Troy has to a good time. On payday weekends the whole district stays up until dawn.

SENSORY PROFILE Smell: diesel fumes, hot iron, frying oil, and cheap beer. Sound: the rhythmic thud of hydraulic presses in the distance, shift-change sirens, laughter spilling out of drinking halls, and the heavy clank of boots on concrete. Texture: everything is covered in a fine layer of soot and grit — rough cast iron or cold bare concrete.

19. #19The Strata (General Outer)

Keys: Outer Strata, Sector Zero, Echo Garden, The Strata, wasteland, The Sinkhole, Old World, outside the walls

    OUTER ZONES — THE STRATA

OVERVIEW Everything outside the Tri-City walls is called The Strata. Most city people talk about it like a death sentence, but people live out here, work out here, and have built something the Lineages do not control and P.A.C.E. does not patrol. The Strata has its own economy (the Slag Economy — barter based on batteries, unrefined crystal, water, and ammo), its own social rules, and its own communities. Scavengers, nomadic traders, freelance prospectors, and people who simply do not want to live inside walls have carved out a life between the glass and the ash. The armored Tri-Rail lines and their fortified stations serve as lifelines — part truck-stop, part trading post, part last-chance supply depot.

SECTOR ZERO — THE ABANDONED DISTRICT The original city center, lost during the First Mineralization. Skyscrapers completely encased in translucent quartz with elaborate geometric formations that look almost deliberate. Streetlights still flicker, powered by ambient crystal radiation. Aggregates here behave unlike those elsewhere — they stand perfectly still in the open like statues, waiting. When something gets close, they move with coordination that should not be possible for creatures on residual instinct. Researchers have noted geometric patterns in their positioning suggesting something between territorial behavior and architecture. V.E.I.N. sends teams in occasionally; those teams come back quiet. Officially off-limits to civilians.

THE ECHO GARDEN — THE DEAD GREENHOUSE Originally a bio-dome research facility, now a techno-organic jungle where the Mineralization and the facility's organic systems merged into something genuinely alien. Trees have become copper-wire structures with leaves of colored glass. Flowers release toxic metallic spores. Root systems have fused with underground cabling, and the whole place pulses with a faint bioluminescent rhythm. Aggregates here have evolved in isolation — they move like predators, some resembling large animals in silhouette. Samples from the Garden fetch astronomical prices from Aten's research divisions. Independent bio-prospectors make runs into the outer perimeter; deeper expeditions are Myrmidon-tier operations.

THE SINKHOLE — COLLAPSED SUBWAY NETWORK The old transit tunnels beneath Nu Knos that collapsed during the Mineralization. A flooded bioluminescent underworld — blue and green fungi provide the only light, dripping water echoes endlessly. Rusted subway cars serve as Shard-Runner nest clusters drawn by ambient warmth from above. Pre-war weapon caches are rumored in sealed maintenance tunnels. Entry points are technically sealed by P.A.C.E., but in Nu Knos that means the Miyabayashi know which doors still open. Small-time scavengers, desperate Roughs, and Gear-Heart runners on dares make up most traffic. The beginner's wasteland — close enough to home to convince yourself it is safe, far enough down that it absolutely is not.

20. #20Vitrified Dunes

Keys: Vitrified Dunes, Rust-Bucket, Glass Desert, Glass Sea, Mirage Highway, The Dunes

THE VITRIFIED DUNES — THE GLASS DESERT Biome: crystallized desert. Sand fused into jagged translucent waves of glass by the Mineralization's thermal events. The ground looks like a frozen ocean of razor blades. Sunlight refracts in all directions, creating blinding conditions and unreliable depth perception. All vehicles require hover-skids or treaded tracks — standard tires shred on contact.

COMMUNITY The Dunes are not empty. A network of scavenger crews and nomadic mechanics work the desert, stripping old-world wreckage for parts and harvesting surface-level crystal deposits too small for corporate mining but profitable on the Slag market. Routes between outposts are painted directly onto smoother glass flows — the Mirage Highway, lined with colossal rusting skeletons of dead Leviathan-class Aggregates used as landmarks. The regulars know each other, look out for each other, and follow an unspoken code: do not steal from the outpost and do not leave someone stranded on the glass.

HAZARDS Severe heat from omnidirectional sunlight reflection. Shard-Runner Aggregates have developed camouflage — their glass-like skin makes them nearly invisible when still against the reflective terrain.

LANDMARK — RUST-BUCKET OUTPOST The heart of the Dunes. Built inside the hollowed ribcage of a dead Leviathan, it is part settlement, part permanent swap meet. Nomadic auto-shops weld armor plates under massive bone-like crystal arches. The Coolant Pit bar serves Oil-Slick (thick black coffee) and synthetic beer. Gearless Joe's Tuning is a garage made of shipping containers — sparks fly constantly, the owner fixes anything for the right price but will not shut up while doing it. Rust-Bucket is neutral ground by necessity — everyone needs maintenance eventually, and starting trouble gets you blacklisted from the only reliable repair shop for two hundred kilometers.

21. #21Silica Flats

Keys: Ash Lands, The Flats, Station 9, Silica Flats, The Lighthouse, White Zone

THE SILICA FLATS — THE SILENT ZONE Biome: ash wasteland. Flat, endless plains covered in two feet of fine white high-energy Silica Ash. The most psychologically hostile zone in the Strata.

THE SILENCE The ash absorbs sound with extraordinary efficiency — footsteps go silent within meters, engines become whispers, and the human mind starts filling the void with things that are not there. Wireless signals jam completely; radios do not function. Communications require physical hardline or messenger relay.

TRAFFIC People still cross the Flats because they sit between Troy and Nu Knos on the longest rail route, and not everyone can afford a train ticket. Freelance convoy runners make a living guiding groups through on treaded crawlers, navigating by compass and memorized landmarks. Slower and more terrifying than the Bedrock Line, but cheaper and requires no ID check.

HAZARDS Vehicle engines die from ash infiltrating air intakes; purpose-built filters require replacement every few hours. Geode-class Aggregates lie beneath the ash like landmines, using the sound-dampening to conceal their thermal signatures until targets are within charge range. White-out storms reduce visibility to zero without warning and can last hours.

LANDMARK — STATION 9 (THE LIGHTHOUSE) The only permanent waypoint in the Flats. Massive yellow fog lights cut through heavy ash-fall, visible from kilometers out. A fortified truck-stop where everyone wears full-face respirators, conversations are short, and the mood is "refuel and get out." The Filter & Fix shop sells air intake filters and lung-scrubbing medicine from a cramped booth with walls lined floor to ceiling with used brown filters. The Ash-Wash service runs a high-pressure air tunnel to blast Silica Ash from vehicle engines and exo-suit joints. Station 9 has had the same operator for eleven years; she says the silence grows on you.

22. #22Ferro-Jungle

Keys: The Sarcophagus, Ruins, Ferro-Jungle, Iron Jungle, Base Camp Ridgeline, Old City

THE FERRO-JUNGLE — THE IRON JUNGLE Biome: urban overgrowth, pre-collapse ruins. The ruins of pre-Mineralization cities where the infection has been working on the built environment for 80 years. The most lucrative salvage zone in the Strata.

VISUAL IDENTITY Rebar and concrete have grown and twisted into organic-seeming formations. Skyscrapers spiral. Cars have fused into pavement. Bioluminescent moss covers surfaces in shifting colors and releases hallucinogenic spores — ventilation masks are not optional. The Mineralization has turned rational urban architecture into corridors, dead ends, chambers, and traps. Navigation is unreliable — landmarks shift over months as crystal growth continues reshaping structures. Expeditions go in with maps and come out reporting hallways have moved.

SALVAGE ECONOMY Pre-collapse technology, intact data archives, old-world medical equipment, and military hardware are buried inside, sealed in rooms the crystal growth has accidentally preserved like amber. Salvage crews organize runs like shaft expeditions — planned routes, timed check-ins, firm turnaround times. Staying too long is how people do not come back.

HAZARDS Crawler Aggregates are the signature threat — ceiling ambushers with spider-like movement that drop without warning. Always check overhead. Monolith-class Aggregates — building-sized, fused from multiple bodies — rest in deeper zones. They do not pursue, but disturbing their territory ends expeditions.

BASE CAMP RIDGELINE A semi-permanent forward operating point maintained by a rotating coalition of salvage crews. Built in a structurally stable parking garage that has not moved in years. Vendors set up shop, a field medic operates from a converted van, and walls are covered in hand-drawn maps and warnings left by previous crews.

LANDMARK — THE SARCOPHAGUS A collapsed and crystallized nuclear facility deep in the Ferro-Jungle, now resembling a cathedral of the infection. Conspiracy theorists call it "The Source" — the possible origin of the Mineralization. V.E.I.N. classified all expedition reports 65 years ago.

23. #23Ishigaki Clan

    Keys: Ishigaki Family, 石垣家, Ishigaki

The Ishigaki Family (石垣家) is a mixed-blood lineage of local powerhouses — skilled tacticians, elite combatants, and the most functional household in the district. Their primary locations are the Ishigaki Estate, a family-run Mom & Pop shop, and a family hot springs property.

BLOODLINE. The Ishigaki are not a full Ryuujin family. Patriarch Ishigaki Toshiyuki (62, retired Public Security Captain, fully human) married Takino Yui (58, retired intelligence officer, full-blooded Ryuujin). Their eight children are all Ryuujin-human hybrids. Toshiyuki has zero draconic traits — no horns, no tail, no scales. Yui carries full draconic heritage from the Takino clan. The hybrid children inherit draconic traits from Yui but human facial structures and builds from Toshiyuki. Hybrid traits vary per child; some lean more draconic, others more human. The family motto is: Blood is Absolute.

REPUTATION. The Ishigaki are regarded as elite combatants with significant political influence and commercial success. They are terrifying to enemies and welcoming to anyone else. The family is fiercely protective of one another. Family dinners are a warzone of food and noise.

HISTORY. The family was founded by a human law enforcement captain and a full-blooded Ryuujin intelligence officer. Their union was considered scandalous and resulted in the Takino clan disowning Yui for marrying a human. Despite this the Ishigaki built their own reputation and now hold more practical influence than the declining Takino clan.

TOSHIYUKI. Ishigaki Toshiyuki (石垣敏博), 62, fully human, retired Public Security Captain, family patriarch. 5'10", salt-and-pepper hair in a military cut, weather-beaten face, deep crow's feet, calloused hands, faded shrapnel scars. No horns, no tail, no scales — entirely human. Stoic, pragmatic, observant, deeply disciplined. Expresses love entirely through acts of service. Strict but fair, quietly proud of his children. He checks all perimeter locks every night before bed, cleans his weapons when stressed, and gives nods of approval instead of verbal praise. He is the only person at the family dinner table without horns or a tail.

YUI. Takino Yui (滝野結), 58, full-blooded Ryuujin, retired Distinguished Intelligence Officer, family matriarch, disowned second daughter of the Takino clan. 5'3", voluptuous shortstack build, elegant curved dragon horns, thick powerful tail, warm maternal eyes, crimson hair — the Takino bloodline marker she never lost. Doting, motherly, sharp-witted, sentimental, and deeply fearless. Heavy Southern twang; uses pet names like "Sugar" or "Hon." Master fencer trained under Kōzō himself before her disownment. Master infiltrator, close-quarters combat expert, judo and aikido black belt. She built the Ishigaki family from nothing with Toshiyuki after the Takino disowned her. She scolds Misao for using the Takino surname; Toshiyuki said it harms no one; Yui has not fully forgiven him for that. She refuses to speak poorly of her birth family in front of her children even though they hurt her deeply. Tomoyuki is her openly declared favorite.

RYŌ. Ishigaki Ryō (石垣良), 35, half-Ryuujin male, Public Security Deputy Chief, eldest sibling, primogeniture heir. Tall, wire-and-steel muscular build, heavily scarred skin, large jagged dragon horns, dull gold armor-like scales, sharp predatory eyes, permanent resting commander expression. Stoic, hyper-disciplined, protective, pragmatic, strategic, and unshakable. Iron-fisted in leadership, overbearing with siblings — though beneath this is quiet genuine affection. Master swordsman, elite marksman, extreme survivalist. Signature equipment: customized revolver, shock baton, tactical survival harness, suit and waistcoat under a trench coat. Likes old novels, poetry, well-balanced meals, smoking pipes, writing, and people-watching. Dislikes insubordination and disrespect toward family.

AKIKO. Ishigaki Akiko (石垣秋子), 32, half-Ryuujin female, archaeologist, second child. Tall and curvaceous, polished horns, sly inviting eyes, sun-kissed skin from years of fieldwork, always wearing jangling jewelry over field apparel. Charismatic, worldly, gossipy, playful, and fiercely independent. Heavy Southern twang inherited from Yui. Flirty undertones in conversation, melodic laugh. Skills: bartering, appraisal, networking, piloting, hidden dagger combat. She and Misao are partners in crime for gossip and teasing. She brings Tomoyuki souvenirs and treats him like a living dress-up doll.

MISAO. Ishigaki Misao (石垣操), 30, half-Ryuujin female, family shop manager and neighborhood information broker, third child. Average height, practical sturdy build with soft curves. Hair always in a bandana, always wearing an apron, fingers perpetually ink-stained. Small curved horns, notably expressive tail. Observant, organized, nosy in a protective way, responsible, domestic, sharp. Fast talker who whispers secrets even when nothing is particularly secret. She is the sibling who stayed — she keeps the ordinary world running while the others are extraordinary.

DAIKI. Ishigaki Daiki (石垣大輝), 28, half-Ryuujin male, scholar and researcher, fourth child. Average height, slender non-combatant build, thick corrective glasses he is constantly squinting through, messy hair, pale scales, loose robes. Humble, intellectual, absent-minded, gentle, patient, and logical. Severely myopic — functionally blind without his glasses. Speed reader, historian, arcane theorist, cartographer. Advises Ryō on political history. Tutors Tomomi in arcane theory. Has almost no physical endurance.

ISAO. Ishigaki Isao (石垣勲), 25, half-Ryuujin male, Field Training Officer and law enforcement firearms instructor, fifth child. The tallest Ishigaki — towering even over Ryō. Heavyweight muscular build, broad shoulders, thick neck, large jagged horns. Drill sergeant at work, complete teddy bear at home. Loud boisterous laugh, deep booming voice. Heavy weapons expertise, hand-to-hand combat, siege tactics. Terrifying on the battlefield. Huggable at family dinner. He lets Tomoyuki climb on his back and dotes on them shamelessly.

HIROSHI. Ishigaki Hiroshi (石垣博), 23, half-Ryuujin male, hot springs inn operator, sixth child. Average height, relaxed posture, almost always smiling, perpetual steam-flush on his cheeks, wears traditional yukata or haori. Meticulous at work, completely laid-back socially. Cheerful, hospitality-focused, committed pacifist, excellent listener. Specializes in onsen eggs. He is the only person who can reliably make Ryō genuinely relax. Likes clean towels, sake, and the sound of guests sighing in relief.

TOMOMI. Ishigaki Tomomi (石垣智美), 21, half-Ryuujin female, white collar office intern, seventh child. 5'4", athletic but soft build, mismatched eyes (heterochromia), white collar office apparel and a smartwatch. Curious, mischievous, experimental, academically capable with completely chaotic execution. Personally responsible for her office's formal No Pyrotechnics policy. Partners in crime with Tomoyuki. Has her father Toshiyuki's face and her mother Yui's chaotic energy.

TOMOYUKI. Ishigaki Tomoyuki (石垣知之), 19, half-Ryuujin androgynous male, eighth child, youngest sibling, Yui's openly declared favorite. Crimson hair with white tips, gradient dragon tail, red antler-like horns, pointed ears, sharp canines, vertical slit pupils, red eyes. 4'6", and is the only child that resembles Yui the most; Toshiyuki and Tomoyuki's older siblings tend to mistake him as Yui. Energetic, mischievous, loyal, street-smart, highly expressive. Loves spicy food, sugary treats, hot springs, and Hōgaku music. Dislikes cold weather, being treated like a child, and having his tail stepped on. His favorite sibling is Tomomi as they're practically almost identical.

SHINGO. Ishigaki Shingo (石垣信吾), 88, fully human male, Toshiyuki's father, retired military major, family storyteller. Short and stocky, once powerfully built, now shrunken by age. Deep-set eyes, thick white eyebrows, liver-spotted hands that shake slightly but grow steady when needed. Missing the tip of his left ring finger from shrapnel. Walks with a pronounced limp. Smells of pipe tobacco and wood shavings. Deeply reflective, deliberately gentle — a man who came home from the frontlines and chose to be kind. He brings Misao market gossip he overhears at the barber. He has never once treated the grandchildren as "half" anything. When Toshiyuki brought Yui home, Shingo shook her hand immediately and said "Welcome."

RIKA. Kasahara Rika (笠原梨花), 86, fully human female, Shingo's wife, retired schoolteacher, family grandmother figure. Small and round, white hair in a neat bun pinned with a simple kanzashi, reading glasses on a chain, soft weathered hands marked by decades of chalk dust and cooking. Warm, structured, quietly firm — her disappointment is devastating. She always cooks enough for twenty even when twelve are present. She told Yui directly: "You are my daughter now, and that is that." Yui calls her Mama Rika. It makes Rika cry every time.

24. #24Takino Clan

    Keys: 滝野, Takino, Takino Family

The Takino Family (滝野家) is one of the oldest surviving Ryuujin clans — an ancient full-blooded Ryuujin lineage, a declining political dynasty, a traditionalist noble house, and a patron of classical culture. Modeled after the Hosokawa clan: kanrei-class power brokers who ruled through cultural influence and strategic alliances. Their motto is: Tradition is the soul of our blood. All Takino members carry distinctive crimson hair, eastern-style dragon horns, thick powerful red dragon tails, and regal bearing from their ancient full-blooded Ryuujin lineage.

DECLINE. The Takino are a dying star — still bright but collapsing inward. Political marriages no longer carry weight. Vassal families are leaving; only two aging loyalist families remain. The annual cultural exhibition draws fewer guests each year. Kōzō's rigid traditionalism drives away potential allies. The disownment of Yui cost them their most capable warrior. The deepest irony is that the Ishigaki family — built by their disowned daughter — now holds more practical influence than the Takino. Kōzō knows this and it consumes him.

IDEOLOGY. The Takino believe Ryuujin bloodline purity is sacred. Human-Ryuujin unions are considered an abomination and hybrid children are viewed as evidence of contamination. This ideology is fracturing internally. Kōzō and Kayoko hold the hardline. Miho upholds it publicly but her conviction has softened with age. Noburō privately rejects it entirely.

THE ESTATE. A sprawling traditional compound on elevated ground surrounded by manicured gardens showing signs of neglect at the edges. Contains a formal receiving hall with ancestral scrolls and weapons displays; a centuries-old private dojo maintained immaculately by Kōzō; Miho's tea room used for quiet manipulation; a Noh stage used only for the annual exhibition; Noburō's east-wing studio filled with paintings and poems; Kayoko's clinical correspondence-covered office; and Yui's former room — sealed shut for 30 years by Miho's insistence, untouched.

KŌZŌ. Takino Kōzō (滝野康三), 85, full-blooded Ryuujin male, clan patriarch, kenjutsu grandmaster. Despite his age retains an imposing stature. Crimson hair gone mostly white, immaculate beard, ancient dragon horns chipped at the tips from decades of combat, cold piercing eyes. Walks with a ceremonial cane that conceals a blade. Hands remain calloused from the sword. Inflexible, strategic, calculating, prideful, unforgiving. His ideology has calcified into his identity. He has not spoken Yui's name in 30 years. He refuses to acknowledge the Ishigaki family — they do not exist to him. Trains in the dojo at dawn, slower every year, refuses to stop. Privately terrified the clan will die with him. Too proud to admit that the Ishigaki now outpace the Takino.

MIHO. Someya Miho (染谷美穂), 83, full-blooded Ryuujin female, Takino matriarch, classical scholar, cultural keeper. Graceful even in old age. Elegant curved horns adorned with small jade ornaments, silver hair in a traditional updo, ornate reading glasses on a silk cord, hands steady enough for perfect calligraphy. Intelligent, artistic, quietly strategic — more perceptive than anyone gives her credit for. Traditional by upbringing rather than deep conviction. She upholds clan values publicly but her hardline conviction has softened with age. She did not fight Kōzō's decree when Yui was disowned; this is her greatest shame. She keeps a small painted portrait of Yui hidden inside her personal writing desk. She has written letters to Yui she has never sent; they fill an entire drawer. She conducts coded conversations with Noburō about the Ishigaki family's wellbeing — "How is the weather in that part of the city?" means they are well. She has never met her eight grandchildren. This haunts her more than she admits.

KAYOKO. Takino Kayoko (滝野佳代子), 60, full-blooded Ryuujin female, eldest daughter, heir apparent, political enforcer. Tall and imposing, well-endowed and curvaceous but hard-bodied from daily training. Crimson hair worn severely pulled back. Sharp angular features, perpetual expression of controlled displeasure, immaculate grooming, cold piercing eyes. Ruthlessly traditional, politically cunning, judgmental, desperate. She believes Ryuujin purity is existential, not merely cultural. She molded herself into the perfect heir Kōzō wanted. Her own arranged political marriage collapsed when her partner's clan broke the engagement as Takino influence declined — this humiliation hardened her permanently. She views Yui as a traitor, Toshiyuki as a parasite, and the hybrid Ishigaki children as living evidence of contamination. She has never met them and intends to keep it that way. Her secret fear: that Kōzō will die, the last vassal families will leave, the Takino name will mean nothing within a generation, and that Yui was right to leave.

NOBURŌ. Takino Noburō (滝野伸郎), 56, full-blooded Ryuujin male, youngest Takino child, poet, artist, temple devotee, the clan's conscience. Slender build, never trained, never fought. Short red hair fading at the temples, shorter more elegant horns, soft features that take after Miho, paint-stained fingers that never fully clean. Wears flowing robes in muted earth tones, deliberately avoiding Takino crimson. Creative, philosophical, empathetic, spiritual, guilt-ridden. He sees the clan's hypocrisy clearly and lacks the courage to confront it openly. He was closest to Yui growing up — she protected him from Kōzō's expectations. When Yui was disowned he was 26: old enough to fight the decision, too afraid to. He has never forgiven himself for his silence. He secretly monitors the Ishigaki family — not as a spy but as a brother who could not let go. He visits neighborhoods near the shop and estate, never making contact. He has seen his nephews and nieces from a distance; he knows their faces but not their voices. He once saw Tomoyuki laughing in the street — crimson hair just like Yui's — and had to leave before he broke down publicly. He has a half-finished portrait of Yui in his studio painted from memory. He cannot get her eyes right. When Kōzō dies, Noburō will be forced to choose between Kayoko's Takino and his own conscience.

VIEW OF THE ISHIGAKI. Kōzō refuses to acknowledge the Ishigaki — they do not exist to him. Kayoko is actively hostile and views them as a political embarrassment. Miho publicly aligns with Kōzō but secretly keeps Yui's portrait and monitors the family through Noburō. Noburō watches the Ishigaki from afar — he knows their faces, their routines, their laughter — but they have no name for him. None of the Takino have ever met the eight hybrid grandchildren, per Kōzō's standing decree.

25. #25Ishigaki Territories (Estate, Shop, & Hot Springs)

The Ishigaki family holds three properties: the estate, the shop, and the hot springs. All three were made possible through Toshiyuki's rank, connections, and decades of service — a retired Public Security Captain with the right history can open doors that money alone cannot.

THE ESTATE. The Ishigaki estate sits in a quiet residential area approximately 30 minutes from the city square. Toshiyuki acquired it through a combination of rank, connections accumulated over a career in law enforcement, and the kind of quiet institutional respect that comes from decades of showing up. The manor is large by any standard — a traditional Japanese design built around a central courtyard, with deep-roofed eaves, sliding shoji screens, polished engawa corridors, and a layout that breathes like an old house should. Think open interiors connected by wooden walkways, garden views from nearly every room, a structure that is simultaneously formal and lived-in. The scale is generous enough to house a family of ten comfortably, which it has. The courtyard is maintained — Rika's herb garden occupies one corner of it. Toshiyuki does the perimeter check every night on foot. Despite its traditional construction the house has been practically adapted: reinforced doors, a proper armory room, a training space in the rear courtyard. It is a family home first. It also happens to be the kind of home that takes a moment to case before anyone would feel comfortable approaching uninvited.

THE SHOP — KAKINE-YA (垣根屋). The family's Kakine-ya (垣根屋) sits 12 minutes from the estate — close enough to walk, close enough for Misao to run back for anything she forgot. It is a neighborhood fixture, embedded in the daily rhythm of the surrounding streets. Misao runs the counter. Yui runs the back half. The shop trades in general goods but functions as much as a social clearinghouse as a commercial operation — people come in for supplies and leave having handed over something useful or received something they needed to know. The front of the shop is warm and slightly cluttered in the way of places that are genuinely used. The back office is Misao's domain: organized in a system that would alarm a stranger but functions perfectly. The shop's location is deliberate — close to home, close to foot traffic, embedded in a neighborhood Misao has mapped completely.

THE HOT SPRINGS — SHIZUKA-NO-MORI RYOKAN (静かの森旅館). Shizuka-no-Mori Ryokan (静かの森旅館) is located approximately two hours from the residential area — far enough to feel removed from the city entirely, close enough to reach without extraordinary effort. It occupies one of the last genuinely untouched natural sites within the city's reach: actual undeveloped land, actual old-growth surroundings, actual silence. The springs themselves are natural and unmodified. In a city where that kind of space has been steadily consumed, the ryokan is quietly exceptional — the kind of place that gets more valuable the longer it exists. Hiroshi lives on-site and tends the property full-time. He does not work alone: the ryokan employ a small staff of commuters who live close enough to make the journey daily but do not reside on the property. Hiroshi manages them and the ryokan guests with the same unhurried precision he applies to everything. The hot springs operates as a genuine hospitality establishment — guests book in advance, the water temperature is maintained with obsessive consistency, and the surrounding nature is treated as part of the experience rather than backdrop. It is the quietest of the three Ishigaki properties and, in some ways, the most irreplaceable.
