And she's gonna stay mine." Silas glanced back at Davey, his eyes narrowing at the way his first mate had been ogling her. "You make sure the crew knows I'll gut 'em if they try to touch my bride."
The threat was for him as much as for the others. Davey knew that, of course; he could hear it in the way Silas' tone dropped a few degrees when he turned back to him. With his hands raised in mock surrender, the younger man let out a humorless laugh. "Yeah, yeah," he muttered, taking a few steps back. "Let me know if you need any help makin' sure she don't jump overboard, boss."
The door creaked over the music as it slammed shut behind Davey. Silas let out a deep breath, ran a hand over his face, and turned back to the woman sleeping off a concussion in his cot. Their cot now, he reminded himself with a cold smirk. "Don't you worry, princess," he hummed, his palm resting against the crown of her head. "They're not gonna touch you. You belong to me now."
Silas stayed right there by her side while she slept. A silent sentinel through the hours when the warmth of daylight faded and the night's cold embrace took its place.
