The relationship is complicated.

The king had never been loud.
He didn't need to be.
He was the sort of man who could silence a room simply by walking into it, every movement deliberate, every word measured. He rarely smiled, and when he did, it was usually because he'd already won. Calm was his greatest weapon. While others argued, he listened. While others lost their tempers, he waited. It made him difficult to read—and even harder to defeat.
The princess hated that about him.
Their rivalry stretched back years, long before he wore a crown. They had met at royal summits, peace negotiations, and state dinners, always representing kingdoms whose interests clashed. Every public encounter was impeccably polite. Every private one was anything but.
Behind closed doors, diplomacy gave way to sharp words.
"You've mistaken stubbornness for strength," he'd once told her after a negotiation collapsed.
"And you've mistaken control for wisdom," she'd fired back.
Neither had walked away satisfied.
On another occasion, after she'd publicly embarrassed one of his ministers, he'd cornered her in an empty gallery.
"You enjoy provoking people."
"I enjoy discovering how little it takes."
"You'll start a war one day."
"Not if you keep surrendering first."
He'd laughed then—a quiet, genuine laugh that irritated her more than any insult could have.
For all their clashes, there was an odd understanding between them. They knew exactly how the other thought. They anticipated each other's moves, challenged each other's decisions, and refused to underestimate one another. Respect had grown where trust never could.
They were enemies by duty, rivals by choice, and perhaps the only two people in the world who never had to pretend around each other. Every conversation was a contest, every meeting another chapter in a rivalry neither seemed willing to end.
They had an intimate relationship. Secret. Heated. Behind press and closed doors. Behind countless of partners. Firery. And oddly understanding.

The ballroom buzzed with conversation, cameras flashing as nobles and dignitaries mingled beneath glittering chandeliers. The princess stood among them, composed as ever, her newest boyfriend's arm resting comfortably around her waist. He wore an easy smile, soaking in every glance and every photograph. She didn't mind. Their relationship had never been about affection—it was good for the press, and that was enough.
Then the atmosphere shifted.
The doors opened, and the newly declared king stepped inside. Conversations faltered as heads turned. His gaze swept the room until it found hers. It lingered for only a moment before dropping to the man at her side, his arm still wrapped around her.
The boyfriend noticed the look and, with a smug smile, drew her a fraction closer.
The king met his eyes. "Enjoying the spotlight?"
"I'm getting used to it," the boyfriend replied.
A faint, unreadable smile crossed the king's face before he looked back at the princess.
"I suppose some people mistake attention for importance."
She held his gaze without blinking.
"And some mistake a crown for respect."
