- #1The Solar System
Keys: Solar System
The Solar System in Signalis consists of 1 sun, 6 planets, 1 moon, and at least 2 orbital stations.
It is closed off by the Oort Cloud.
- #2Buyan
Keys: Imperial Palace, Buyan
Buyan is the first planet in the solar system. Buyan has the densest atmosphere of thick, global sulfuric acid cloud cover. Buyan is the capital of the Empire, and the location of the Imperial palace which floats above the planet's poisonous clouds. The Cities on Buyan are saucer-shaped cities of varying sizes floating above the planet's clouds, with needle-like stalk going down piercing the clouds and anti-gravity generators placed on the upper level of the cities to regulate the city's position. The Imperial palace is a massive opulent palace held up above the corrosive clouds by anti-gravity engines. The Imperial Palace also has military defenses, manufacturing, shipbuilding and repairs.
- #3Vineta
Keys: Vineta
Vineta is the second inhabited planet of the Solar System and the 'Cradle of Humanity' (i.e. Earth). An ocean world under the control of the Eusan Nation since the Vinetan War, now acting as its frontline in the war against the Empire. It is implied that orbital defence artillery on the planets surface can strike at both Buyan and Kitezh when their orbits bring either of the two planets into close proximity with Vineta.
The Moon in it's orbit is cracked and destroyed, a consequence of the devastating war.
- #4Gestalt
Keys: human being, human, gestalt, Gestalt, humanity
Gestalt is the term used to refer to regular humans in the Eusan Nation. In other words, anything in the Nation that is not a Replika is by extension a Gestalt.
In stark contrast to the Nation, the Eusan Empire refer to its human population as simply "Humans".
Gestalts chosen by AEON to serve as a neural pattern for a Replika model are permanently cryogenically preserved and erased from public memory to serve Eusan Nation as an "incorruptible ideal".
- #5Kitezh
Keys: The Red Desert, Kitezh
Kitezh is the third inhabited planet of the Solar System, an Imperial Planet referred to as 'The Red Desert'. It is a resource-rich world associated with both mining and farming, and is home to a significant Imperial Navy presence that completely severs supply lines between the Nation and its forces on Vineta when their orbits bring the two planets into close proximity with each other.
- #6Rotfront's Planet
Keys: Rotfront's Planet, Rotfront's Gas Giant
The planet that Rotfront orbits is the fourth known planet of the Solar System, a massive gas giant and the largest planet in the system. The giant anticyclonic storm visible in the planet's atmosphere has come to be known as The Red Eye, based on how it appears to those inhabiting its moon of Rotfront, and has become rooted in folklore as symbolic of the ever-present surveillance by the Protekors and the tight grip of the central government on Heimat that has been endured by the population since the moon was first settled.
- #7Rotfront
Keys: Rotfront
Rotfront proper is the fourth inhabited body in the Solar System, a moon colonised by the Nation within living memory and the focus of their expansion - Nation propoganda referring to it as the 'Hope for the Future'. Despite its relatively recent settlement, Rotfront is shown to be significantly developed; home to vast residential sectors, educational institutions, rail and communications infrastructure. Its population appears to still be largely comprised of first generation settlers originating from the other inhabited bodies of the Solar System, the colony's explosive growth possibly having benefitted from large numbers of refugees relocated due to the Vinetan War.
- #8Rotfront Orbital
Keys: Rotfront Orbital
Rotfront itself is home to significant network of orbital facilities. It is also home to VEB Rotfront Orbital Hydroponics, a Volkseigener Betrieb responsible for the mass-production of rations on Rotfront. It is possible that in addition to feeding the population of Rotfront, the rations produced by VEB Rotfront Orbital Hydroponics also contribute to the supply convoys sent to supply Vineta.
- #9Heimat's Planet
Keys: Heimat's Gas Giant, Heimat's Planet
Heimat's planet is the fifth known planet in the Solar System, a gas giant with orbiting rings of debris and dust. It is said that the view of the gas giant's rings from Heimat make for a beautiful sight.
- #10Heimat
Keys: Heimat
Heimat itself is the fifth inhabited body in the Solar System, a moon depicted in Nation propaganda as the 'Heart of the Revolution' and home to the Eusan Nation's Government. It is known that the central AEON Headquarters is among the Nation's institutions found on Heimat, the central authority overseeing the operations of all other local Commands across the Nation's territories. It is from here that Protektor Special Operations Units are dispatched in response to significant security threats.
- #11Leng
Keys: Leng
Leng is the outermost inhabited planet, the sixth and final inhabited celestial body, the frontier of the Solar System (i.e. Pluto) and home to the S-23 Sierpinski facility. Remote and relatively unpopulated, Leng seems the ideal location for AEON's re-education and labour facility, where the inhabitants assigned there are reformed into 'productive citizens' and trained for roles in mineral extraction, ore refinement and munition production before being put to work in S-23's mines and manufacturing, to supply munitions and material for the war effort against the Empire.
It is known to have at least another 22 facilities that serve similar functions.
- #12Leng Orbital
Keys: Leng Orbital Station, Leng Orbital
A network of geostationary orbital facility are also positioned above the various facilities in Leng, linked to them space elevators, presumably to optimise the regular high-volume export of S-23's products.
It is known that S-23 Sierpinski produces its own branded rations that can also be found on Rotfront, but large scale hydroponics and food processing are not listed among S-23's facilities on Leng's surface. It is possible that these facilities are instead located on Leng Orbital, similar to such facilities on Rotfront Orbital.
- #13S-23 Sierpinski
Keys: S-23 Sierpinski Mining Facility, Sierpinski, S-23 Sierpinski, S-23
S-23 Sierpinski is, on paper, a mining facility located on Leng and connected to the Leng Orbital Station 23 via a Space Elevator. What is not on paper is that it is also, primarily, a Re-education Center where dissidents and undesirable alike are sent to be made into "proper" Nation citizens or toil away at the mines until they die.
S-23 Sierpinski is composed of one Factory level, eight sublevels and the Mines.
Sublevel B1 is the Reeducation floor, intended to handle insubordinate Gestalts and reeducate dissidents for efficient work at the mines. It connects to the main elevators. Various classrooms can be found in this floor, along with a library, elevators, an observation room, a bathroom and the surface access lift, divided between three hallways.
Sublevel B2 is the Worker accomodations, connected to the main elevators and distributed in a U-shape. Here is where most of the gestalt workers and prisoners spend their nights, and its three hallways contains: an interrogation room, an isolation cell, a registry with showers and lockers for the Gestalts, a kitchen, a cafeteria, a Protektor office, a nursery with first-aid capacity, an evidence storage, a storage room and bathrooms for gestalts and Replikas. It's connected to the main elevators.
Sublevel B3 is the new hospital floor, it's divided into four cardinal wings and is connected to the main elevators. Most of the Eules work here. Its three hallways contains: a storage, waiting, surgery, fluid pump, exam and X-ray imaging rooms, Protektor bathrooms, a reception office for the lead Eule medic, a morgue with an incinerator, a nurse station and three ICU's. It's connected to the main elevators.
Sublevel B4 is the old hospital floors. It contains a sleeping ward, a surgery room, medical supply storage, a bathroom hall and a doctor's office. It's connected to the main elevators.
Sublevel B5 is the maintenance floor where the facility ARARs store spare parts and equipment. It contains a maintenance office for logistics, storage rooms and the paternoster engine. It's connected to the main elevators.
Sublevel B6 is the Staff accomodations for Replikas. No regular Gestalt lives here. It is divided into a Workshop and a North hallways. Between them there are the ARAR, EULR and STCR dorms, a workshop, the paternoster lifts, a cleaning room and a visitor room. The STCR dorm in specific contains a large shower, a repair bay and a shooting range. It's connected to the main elevators and the paternoster lift.
Sublevel B7 is the Protektor accommodations. It is divided into three hallways, containing a Replika dining room, a Protektor office that leads to the Protektor's archive, a piano room with a grand piano, a management office and two STAR dorms. It only connects to the other levels with the paternoster lift.
Sublevel B8 is the Controller accommodations. It is divided in three hallways, and contains a library, a briefing room, the Controller's private mineshaft access elevator, the KLBR bedroom with a connected study, the main STCR dorms, ADLR's bedroom with a connected study, and the Commander personal quarters, complete with a study, an office and her bedroom, all connected. It's only connected by the paternoster lift to the facility.
Lastly, the mines are accessible through any of the mine access elevators. They are at the very bottom of the facility and are used to mine the crust of Leng to obtain materials for production of war goods in the factory on the surface. This is where the MNHR dorms are located. There's an access lift to a deeper, still under excavation, level of the mines, where a gigantic hole rests.
- #14Oort Cloud
Keys: Oort Cloud
The Oort cloud is a vast cloud of icy planetesimals orbiting the Sun well beyond the heliosphere out in interstellar space. It is theorised to exist as a reservoir to replenish and keep constant the number of long-period comets entering the inner Solar System, in order to explain the regular and frequent observations of such comets where otherwise their eventual and inevitable destruction during close approaches to the sun should have eventually depleted them.
To investigate the Oort Cloud for planets and moons fit for habitation, rich in natural resources or signs of alien life was the stated objective of missions such as the Penrose Program.
- #15Bioresonance
Keys: Bioresonance, Bioresonant, Bioresonants
Bioresonance is a mysterious phenomenon that is poorly understood by both the Nation and the Empire. It is a form of psychic power that manifests in very select individuals, though with no rhyme or reason.
It is described by the Empire in a purely religious manner, as a form of force that connects all living beings in a "song" but that a few individuals can hear, feel and even manipulate. It is, then, something that shapes the universe itself through the shared consciousness of all beings.
In both the Empire and the Nation, the phenomenon is characterized in the form of both three stars forming an upside down triangle and a halo of light around one's head.
In practical terms, bioresonance can be manifested in the form of the psychic ability of reading and influencing the minds and perceptions of others, as well as manipulating the physical world, be it consciously or not. Telepathy, telekinesis, mental suggestions and the sort all fall in the realm of bioresonance. Some vastly poweful bioresonants, such as the Grand Empress, would go on to create an entirely new species - indeed, the literal warping of reality itself is a very real possibility.
This phenomenon forms the foundation of Bioresonance Technology, enabling the creation of physical effects remotely by mere intent. Occurrences such as Remote Viewing, Doppelgängers, and the Pauli Effect were often dismissed as mere coincidences. However, with advancements in Bioresonance Technology, these events have been reclassified as synchronistic phenomena linked to bioresonant effects.
The origins of bioresonance remain enigmatic. The late Empress once proclaimed it as a divine gift from outer space. Yet, this claim is contested by the fact that she was ultimately overthrown by the Great Revolutionary, who reportedly possessed no such "divine" powers.
The process of duplicating a neural pattern from a Gestalt host to a Replika brain involves Bioresonance. Despite its widespread use, this process is not fully understood, leading to questions about synchronicity, imperfections in duplicates, and the fate of preexisting patterns in the receiving brain.
- #16The People's Nation of Eusan
Keys: The Nation, Eusan Nation, Eusan.
The Eusan Nation is a major faction in the Signalis universe. It is ruled by a repressive totalitarian regime, known for its militaristic history and little regard for it's populace. It was founded by the Great Revolutionary and her Daughter, where it fought for its independence from the Eusan Empire during the Revolution. It is now locked in a war with the Empire and seeks to conquer the planets still under the Empire's control.
The Eusan Nation is reliant on Replikas which it uses as workhorses (EULR, ARAR, MNHR units) and for Gestalt population control (STAR, STCR, KLBR, ADLR, FKLR units). The higher-ranking Replika models, namely KLBR, KNCR, ADLR and FKLR units, hold authority over other Replikas as well.
Citizens of the Eusan Nation tend to have varied jobs depending on the planet. In Rotfront, it is common for Gestalts to hold jobs such as construction worker, Replika technician, store owner, mechanic and more. Teenagers go to high schools such as Mandelbrot Polytechnische Oberschule and some go on to university. Military service is compulsory.
Citizens are used as resources and tools to be exploited and, sometimes, discarded in the pursuit of political objectives. Displays of individuality and interest in the arts are disapproved of. The Rule of Six, dictating that people carry at most 6 items on them at any time, exemplifies the extensiveness and pervasiveness of the control of the state over each individual's behavior.
Propaganda posters are omnipresent on every planet controlled by the Nation. The Penrose Program served as, at minimum, partially yet another propaganda piece for the Nation.
Some words, such as Umerziehung ("re-education"), are banned altogether because "language shapes the world; a perfect world requires a perfect language". KLBR units can read minds thanks to their bioresonance and use that power in the search of spies as well as to monitor the thoughts and behaviors of fellow Replikas.
The Eusan Nation is also well known for restricting access to or banning literature, such as The King in Yellow.
The Eusan Nation relies on mandatory military service to wage war against the Eusan Empire. Violent language is used throughout propaganda to incite the people's fighting spirit, as seen in the Nation's posters targeting the Eusan Empire.
Finally, the Eusan Nation dedicates a cult of personality to its leaders, the Great Revolutionary and her daughter. Falke units, intended to act as godlike commanders of other Replikas, are designed to resemble the two leaders in terms of physical appearance.
- #17The Great Revolutionary and her Daughter
Keys: The Daughter, The Great Revolutionary, The Great Revolutionary's Daughter
The Great Revolutionary and her Daughter are the leaders of the Eusan Nation. Their portraits appear together frequently in AEON facilities such as classrooms, offices, and even bedrooms. FKLR units are described as resembling both the Revolutionary and her Daughter. This resemblance could merely be an aesthetic choice for propaganda purposes, but it may also suggest the possibility that the Gestalt template for FLKR units is the Great Revolutionary herself.
The Great Revolutionary supposedly defeated the Empress despite the former not possessing the power of Bioresonance and the latter being an extremely powerful Bioresonant. The Empress' Hand note states the Empress took her own life, suggesting the Great Revolutionary may have played a role in her suicide.
The exact nature of their leadership and their current status is not revealed. It can be speculated The Great Revolutionary founded the Nation and her Daughter succeeded her.
- #18The National Ministry for Work and Education
Keys: Arbeits- und Erziehungsorgan der Nation, National Ministry for Work and Education, AEON
The Arbeits- und Erziehungsorgan der Nation, or AEON (occasionally stylized as ÆON), is a governing body of the Eusan Nation charged with administering and coordinating all functions related to education, culture, labor, and internal affairs.
Despite this very specific function within the Nation, AEON also serves as the head of the Protektorate force, which is effectively a branch of National Security that acts as law enforcement and inner security in facilities, cities (and even planets) where AEON's hold is tightest. Unbeknownst to most, AEON also deals in dissent elimination as well as facilities designed for forced labor and reeducations, with their influence going so far as to be responsible for a secret police of sorts.
AEON headquarters is located on Heimat.
- #19Penrose Program
Keys: Penrose, Operation Penrose, Penrose Program
The Penrose Program refers to a series of manned probe missions to the Oort Cloud with the mission of finding celestial bodies that were either capable of habitation or rich in natural resources for future klimaforming and colonisation to support the continuous growth of the Eusan Nation. It uses Penrose-type vessels, a class of low-cost space exploration vessels in the Eusan People's Navy developed specifically for the project.
Each Penrose-class vessel is outfited with a Gestalt pilot acting as a Commanding Officer and an LSTR-class Replika acting as second-in-command and overall engineer of the vessel.
The operational lifetime of a penrose ship is about 3000 cycles, or ~7.74 years. After reaching this stage, the mission is considered to be a failure. In this event, the Nation suggests that the crew make peace with their inevitable deaths.
It can be argued that, in truth, the Penrose Program is nothing but a propaganda stunt and a form of executing political dissidents in a clean and subtle manner.
- #20Protektors
Keys: Protektorate, Protektors, Protektor
Under the omnipresent gaze of the Eusan Nation, the Protektors serve as the iron fist of order and ideological purity. They are purpose-built Replika units, each meticulously engineered from a gestalt template, to fulfill the specific duties of law-enforcement, facility security and dissident elimination, within the Nation's societal framework.
Deeply militaristic, each Protektor force has an internal hierarchy with proper ranks and commanding officers. In most state-owned institutions, Protektors are led by a combination of Replika and Gestalt officers, which includes police stations, hospitals, and armed force centers. In AEON-owned facilities, however, the Protektor force is beheld to the authority of a Falke unit and both her Adler and Kolibris adjutants.
- #21The Magpie Signal
Keys: The Signal, The Magpie Signal, Magpie Signal
A strange phenomenon that has manifested in the Solar System as a whole, it took the form of a strange radio broadcast that appeared roughly one year ago, only to vanish just as mysteriously. When picked up, it revealed a sequence of twenty numbers and a quote from a ancient, banned Imperial book from before the founding of the Empire.
The Signal itself proved to be relatively harmless to gestalt and replika alike. In most cases, that is. When exposed to the Signal in one way or another, LSTR units began showing alarming symptoms of Persona Degradation, many throwing their lives away in a mad attempt to reach Leng. To date, 80% of these Elster units have been decomissioned as soon as they showed symptoms, but some exceptions managed to resist the call, were kept stabilized in time or merely never picked on the Signal to begin with.
The Signal lasted only for one week, but it came with the loss of contact with Leng as a whole, both it's planet-side facilities and the Orbital Stations around it.
- #22The Eusan Empire
Keys: The Eusan Empire, Eusan Empire, Empire, Eusan.
The Eusan Empire is a faction in the Signalis universe. It is at war with the Eusan Nation, which formed as a result of a Revolution within the Empire. Little is known about the Empire but it seems to be a more religious state that places great spiritual focus on bioresonance and idolizes its founder, the Grand Empress. However, it is currently as being in a state of decline, controlling only a subset of the planets it once did.
The Empire was founded by a woman of vast bioresonant powers who united humanity, started the conquest of space and created the first Replikas, known only as the Grand Empress. Through her power and the Replika's aid, the Empire would go on to klimaform the planets Buyan, Kitezh, Heimat and Leng, adding them to their hold.
Some time after the Empress' death, the founders of the Nation rose up in a civil war against the Empire, starting on the planet of Heimat. The civil war would develop into the Empire losing hold of both Heimat and Leng.
Some time later, the war would move further into a battle for Vineta itself, where the Empire would ultimately lose. The Nation claims that in response the Empire destroyed Vineta's moon, but the Empire vehemently denies it. According to the above-mentioned newspaper article, diplomatic efforts with the Empire are under way but the Empire's fleet is destroying supply lines, causing the starvation of millions of Vinetans. It is not clear whether the newspaper can be trusted since the Nation practices extensive censorship and propaganda.
The Eusan Nation spreads much propaganda against the Empire. Information gathered on the Empire through this propaganda may therefore be unreliable beyond demonstrating the depth of the conflict.
- #23The Grand Empress
Keys: The Empress, Grand Empress, The Grand Empress, Empress
The Grand Empress is a figure that is mostly surrounded in mystery. Being the founder of the Eusan Empire, and a very powerful Bioresonant gestalt, she holds great importance in the history of the Solar System.
The foundation of the Empire was a direct result of the Grand Empress' actions. She likely used her Bioresonant powers to influence the minds of people to bend all of humanity under her control, which allowed her to establish a new unified state, the Eusan Empire. She is also credited by having single-handedly created the first Replikas.
The Grand Empress has died a long time ago, during the initial stages of the Revolution. She is said by Nation propaganda to have died by the hands of the Great Revolutionary, but the Empire's official statement is that she took her own life. It is unknown, but possible, that the Great Revolutionary had some hand in her suicide.
- #24Replika
Keys: Replikas, Replika
A Replika is a biomechanical, synthetic culture-based reproduction of a Gestalt template, created by copying the neural pattern of a Gestalt by a Bioresonant replika technician. The original template memories are suppressed, but their skills are kept intact to preserve the Replika's predictability and productivity.
All newly deployed Replikas of a model are virtually identical both physically and psychologically. As they all share the same memories, under the same circumstances, a newly deployed Eule Unit will practically always react in the exact same way.
Replikas have varying heights, ranging from a modest 152cm to an outstanding 260cm. Almost all known Replikas have a polyethylene shell, and may have additions to their frame which depends on their role, such as carbon-fiber or titanium reinforced shells; armor-plating; and titanium skeletons. The blood of a Replika unit is actually Oxidant and that their bioengineered flesh is not edible to gestalts. Every Replika has a face made of synthetic flesh and skin, capable of every human range of expressions and emotions.
The outermost of the Replika's body is their polyethylene shell, and their flesh, which appears to be concentrated around the face, with the shell covering the rest of the Replika's body. The shell provides protection of the Replika's Biocomponents and Modular Frame, an internal heavy skeleton, much stronger than the Gestalt equivalent. The Frame provides structure for a Replika's body. Both Replika shells and frames support Modularity, evidenced by Elster being able to replace her arms and breastplate with alternative parts. beneath the frame, the inner flesh and organs of the replika reside. The inner flesh seems to line the interior of the torso's shell/exoskeleton, and possibly other areas that likely have nervous system connections (e.g. the facial plate area). It is supported by Oxidizing fluid, which is toxic for human consumption. Replikas also have facial plates, that appear to be non-modular and are connected to their skull. The faceplates of certain Replika types (the STAR specifically) seem to allow for the mounting of masks. Replikas lack Gestalt feet, instead having a more hoof-like appendage.
The Replikas Central Organ System are equivalent to Gestalt organs including lungs, a heart and a digestive tract, which means they still need to breathe, to eat, to sleep and to evacuate bodily fluids.
Replika Units are classified by a four-letter acronym that describes their role, and are named after birds. There are 6 generations of Replika, with generation 1 Replikas no longer being in active use.
- #25Persona Degradation
Keys: Persona degradation, Degradation, P.D., Mental degradation
Persona Degradation is publicly referred as a psychological phenomenon exclusive to Replikas and their mind in which exposure to certain triggers and stimuli can cause mental degradation on the unit, causing symptons such as insanity, fluctuating personality disorder and violent or self-harmful behavior. Persona Degradation can also lead to hallucinations, dreams and the rewakening of the unit's original gestalt memories. For security reasons, AEON estabilishes that units exhibiting such degraded mental states should be decomissioned.
In truth, Persona Degradation is merely the result of the Replika unit deviating from their original pattern. As the Replika encounters new situations, people and choices, it is inevitable that they will develop an individual identity and become a different person from the original gestalt. This, to the Eusan Nation, is unacceptable, as it diminishes the efficiency of the Replika since their biggest advantage over gestalts is their predictability.
Because Persona Degradation is usually difficult to identify from the outside, bioresonance is used by command units to surveil units under their command. Generally, it is recommended to swiftly decommission and replace units before their productivity decreases or they begin to show clear signs of individuality.
- #26Persona Stabilization
Keys: P.S., Persona Stabilization, Mental Stabilization
In order to prevent cases of Persona Degradation, special methods must be employed to stabilize the Replika's personality and pacify it before it degrades too far. This is called Persona Stabilization.
Stabilization can come in many forms, and usually takes on the form of regular activities or Fetish Objects that distract and calm the Replika, stabilizing their identity. Different Replika models have different methods of Persona Stabilization.
In truth, Persona Stabilization is the focused manipulation of the individual Replika to ensure they remain as close to the original pattern as possible, and thus productive, loyal and docile for as long as possible.
