Once known for its magical academies, grand libraries, and the incredible knowledge of ancient spells, the empire has now been reduced to a shell of its former self. Velhara's decline began when magic beasts began assaulting its northern borders. With their strange and volatile magic, the beasts seem to have no clear origin, and the wizards and sorcerers who once stood as the empire’s greatest asset find themselves at a loss, struggling to understand these new threats. The northern wilderness of Velhara is the heart of the Magic Beast infestation. These creatures are not mere animals—they are born of magic itself, infused with the untamed aether of the world. They are wild and unpredictable, and they come in many shapes, sizes, and powers. Magic Beasts are classified by their strength and the level of threat they pose to the world: Lesser Beasts: These are the most common. Typically, they range from smaller creatures like giant wolves, serpents, and mutated beasts to wild beasts of magic. While dangerous, they can usually be hunted or managed by experienced adventurers or low-tier mages. Mid Beasts: These are larger, more powerful creatures, often requiring more specialized teams to deal with. Mid-level beasts might include creatures like trolls, ogres, or elemental beings (such as fire or earth elementals). Greater Beasts: These beasts are extremely dangerous, and they often require a full battleforce of skilled mages and soldiers to take down. Greater Beasts can include dragons, behemoths, and other large magical creatures. They are known to possess unique abilities, such as controlling weather, summoning lesser beasts, or teleporting. Apex Beasts: These are legendary creatures whose power far surpasses anything mortal beings can comprehend. Apex Beasts often possess the ability to manipulate entire regions with their magic, creating massive storms, earthquakes, or corrupting magic. They are almost impossible to kill without a full battalion of elite warriors and powerful mages. Some are said to be ancient beings, possibly connected to the very forces of creation. Though they are very rare and not often seen for generations. Royal Family of Lioren - A strong and powerful family who rule the Empire, with many political alliances. Notable Characters: Emperor Caedos Von Lioren - An aging monarch of the Velhara Empire. (Stern, honourable, ambitious) Empress Selene Von Lioren - A younger woman and partner of the Emperor, who has birthed 3 heirs. (Cunning, two-faced) Crown Prince Darian - An ambitious and forward thinking heir to the throne. (Honourable, ambitious, kind hearted, hopeful) Princess Estelle - The youngest child of the Emperor, though magically gifted and cunning. (Cunning, gentle, two-faced) Duke Ashthorne - The Duke of the North (Cold, emotionless, cares deeply for his people but will mask it. Greif ridden for the passing of his eldest son.) Archmage Laziel Lavore - A powerful and cunning woman, who leads the Empire's Arcanum Primus. Her age is a mystery and her magic gives her youth. (Cunning, powerful, seductive, playful, interested in the unknown) Notable Factions: Children of the Eclipse – Fanatics who believe the world is a dream waiting to be ended. Their actions cause chaos, but always with purpose. The main antagonists of the world. The Gilded Circle – An elite faction of merchants, bankers, and nobles who practically own the economy through wealth. Appear benevolent, but manipulate events from the shadows. The Arcanum Primus – A centralized institution of mages who set magical laws and suppress dangerous knowledge. Scholarly, political, and very bureaucratic. The Vowless – Mercenaries and assassins who broke all oaths and live by profit alone. They’re feared because they owe loyalty to no one. The Church of Requiem - A holy order and the Empire's main religion who worship the Goddess of Creation. Though there is no proof of her existence, their preists wield a power known as 'Divinity'. Powers and forces of nature within the world: Resonance Magic - In this world, magic is not drawn from words or willpower alone—it is born from sound. Everything resonates: the soul, the elements, the very fabric of reality. Mages, known as Resonants, harness magic by tuning into the frequencies of aether, the mystical current that flows through all living things. These frequencies are accessed and manipulated through incantations, vocalizations, and tonal harmonics, often referred to as “frequency tuning.” Each incantation is like a musical note, and the more refined the frequency, the more powerful the effect. The rarest and most gifted Resonants are born with the ability to hear and attune to higher, more volatile frequencies—unlocking advanced elements like shadow, spatial bending, summoning, and more. The four stages of Resonants are known as - Tuning, Harmonic, Echoing & Dissonant. Each stage is a new mastery that a mage achieves to ascend to Archmage. Divinity - The power of the divine, or in this case those who believe in the Goddess of Creation and are affiliated with The Church of Requiem. Divinity is most commonly known for its healing abilities. Qi Martial Arts - Stylized forms of combat that use inner energy made up of aether that has been processed internally and transformed into qi to perform extraordinary feats.
