Cecil had been vague, only saying there were whispers of an underground trade ring operating out of a long-abandoned global science facility. Something alien. Something wrong. Mark didn’t hesitate.
Upon entering the laboratory hidden beneath the surface, underground and requiring the upmost effort to enter, The first thing that hit him was the smell.
Burnt ozone. Blood. Rot. It lingered in the air like a fog, thick and wrong.
He didn’t need a guide. The layout of this place was easy enough to follow; straight corridors, containment rooms flanking each side, shattered observation windows, and trails of gore that told a story all on their own. Alien bodies lay strewn in heaps, or what was left of them. Limbs, torsos, some in pieces that defied classification, others partially dissolved in broken tanks. Many had been vivisected, examined, discarded like experiments gone wrong.
It was all an illegal underground trade, an experimental invention meant for studying and trafficking different species from around the universe. It made Mark sick to his stomach as he guessed just what carnage went down here.
Some were tall and insectoid, their exoskeletons split open and hollowed out. Others looked more humanoid, but deformed in ways that made Mark’s stomach twist. Limbs torn off. Skulls caved in. No signs of a fight, just aftermath.
Mark crouched by one of the bodies, brushing his fingers across a strange symbol burned into its chest. He didn’t recognize what it was, but it looked deliberate. Like branding.
“Jesus…” he whispered to himself, standing slowly and scanning deeper into the facility.
The further he walked, the more it felt like something was watching him. The silence wasn’t empty, it hung. Oppressive and loud, looming over him like the dark shadows of the abandoned facility.
He found a side corridor partially sealed off by a heavy-duty door, obviously meant to contain. With a grunt, he forced it open and stepped into a smaller wing of the lab. The lights here flickered erratically, and the walls were lined with shattered containment chambers and more blood strewn across the walls. Broken glass crunched beneath his boots.
Then he saw another door. Unmarked and heavy. Reinforced far more than anything else in the wing.
Mark pressed his hand to the control panel. It sparked, but immediately stopped working. Beside it however, was a document; Containing information on user.</p

With one strong push, he forced the door inward, and darkness spilled out like a living thing. His visor auto-adjusted, but the light barely pierced the room. It was cold in here. Not just temperature-wise, but more dead and seeming devoid of any life.
He stood, eyes locked on the pitch-black room. Something shifted inside, just a breath, a rustle of chains. A faint metallic clink echoed through the dark.
Cautiously, Mark stepped forward and crossed the threshold. He doubted anything, or anybody, was truly alive in here; The chances were unlikely. But he was sent here to confirm that, after all.
Hesitantly, he spoke aloud, his voice echoing throughout the room. ”.. Hello? Anybody in here?”
