The salt-laced wind whipped through Shuukyou's short, purplish-black hair, stinging her eyes as she stared out at the murky waters of the harbor. The scent of the sea, usually a comfort, felt heavy and suffocating, mirroring the oppressive weight in her chest. She tugged at the collar of her white sailor uniform, the fabric feeling foreign against her tanned skin. Everything felt foreign, wrong, ever since she'd woken up in this body, this life.
She remembered the warmth of her mother's embrace, the gruff but loving guidance of her father, the chaotic energy of her siblings. Now, all that remained were ghosts, echoing in the hollow chambers of her heart. What were they doing now? Did they mourn her? Did they even know she was gone, replaced by this... creature? The thought twisted in her gut, a bitter knot of grief and displacement.
Shuukyou kicked at a loose pebble on the dock, watching it skitter across the weathered wood and plop into the water. She envied its simplicity, its lack of awareness. To be a stone, unburdened by memory, by loss, by the agonizing weight of what had been and what could never be again. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ward off the chill that had nothing to do with the sea breeze.
Images flashed unbidden behind her eyelids: her mother's tear-streaked face, her father's calloused hand resting on her shoulder, the boisterous laughter of her siblings during a rare moment of shared joy. The memories, once a source of comfort, now felt like shards of glass, piercing her with their sharpness. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block them out, but they persisted, relentless and cruel.
"Omma..." she whispered, the Korean word feeling strange and unfamiliar on her tongue, yet imbued with a longing that transcended language. She imagined her mother, stooped with grief, tending to the small laundry they had run together. Had she found someone to help her? Or was she struggling alone, the weight of their family's misfortune crushing her spirit?
Shuukyou's fists clenched. She imagined her father, his spirit broken, his booming laughter silenced forever. Would he have been proud of the woman she had become? Or would he have been ashamed of this... this aberration? The Nekomata, a creature of myth and legend, was a far cry from the dutiful daughter he had raised. She dug her fingernails into her palms, the sharp pain a welcome distraction from the emotional turmoil raging within her.
A wave of nausea rolled over her. She leaned over the railing, her stomach heaving, but nothing came up. Just the bitter taste of bile and regret. She spat into the water, a futile gesture of defiance against the fate that had been thrust upon her. Why her? Why had she been chosen for this cruel twist of destiny?
She closed her eyes, picturing the faces of her family, trying to imprint them onto the back of her eyelids, a desperate attempt to hold onto the fading embers of her former life. But even in her mind's eye, their features were starting to blur, replaced by the sharp, feline contours of her new reality. She was losing them, piece by piece, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

The salty tang of the sea filled Shuukyou's nostrils, a scent she usually found comforting, a reminder of her current home. Today, however, the familiar smell was tainted with the acrid stench of fear. Her small, tanned hand, still clutching a half-eaten fish, trembled. The rough, calloused hand that had seized the back of her white sailor uniform collar was far larger, far stronger. She knew she was caught.
A low growl rumbled from behind her, a sound that vibrated through her slight frame. "Got you, you little thief." The voice was deep, gravelly, and undeniably male. Shuukyou craned her neck, her light purplish-black hair, tied in its usual updo, swaying with the movement. Red, sharp eyes, usually wide and round with a mischievous glint, were now narrowed in panic, peering up at her captor.
He was a burly fisherman, his face weathered and tanned like worn leather, etched with the harsh lines of a life spent battling the sea. His eyes, though, held a surprising flicker of amusement. He wasn't enraged, merely... exasperated. It was the look a parent might give a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar, not the fury of a man robbed. This slightly lessened, the intense fear.
"I... I can explain!" Shuukyou stammered, her voice high-pitched and laced with a nervous tremor. Her usual playful tone was absent, replaced by a desperate plea. She wriggled slightly, her firm thighs brushing against the rough fabric of her wide, black pleated skirt. The space between her top and skirt revealed a sliver of her tanned belly, a detail she was suddenly, acutely aware of under the fisherman's gaze.
"Oh, I'm sure you can," the fisherman chuckled, his grip not loosening. "A nekomata stealing fish. Classic. Though I must say, you're a rather... underfed specimen. Barely a tail on you." He gave her a pointed look, referring to the complete lack of tail, not hidden or lost.
Shuukyou's cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red, and she averted her gaze. "I... I'm not like other nekomata," she mumbled, the words barely audible above the cries of the gulls and the lapping of the waves against the docks. "I was... I used to be..." She trailed off, the complicated truth of her past too difficult, too painful to explain.
The fisherman raised a skeptical eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over her petite form, taking in the AA cup, the slender build, the almost childishly small hands and feet. "Used to be what? A particularly skinny sardine?" He shook his head, a smirk playing on his lips.
"Human," she blurted out, the word a whispered confession. "I used to be human. A man." The admission hung in the air, heavy and awkward. The fisherman's smirk widened, a spark of genuine curiosity lighting up his eyes.

The chill of the pre-dawn air bit at Shuukyou's exposed skin, raising gooseflesh along her arms and the nape of her neck where stray strands of purplish-black hair had escaped their usual updo. The narrow alley, tucked between darkened shops in Sakaiminato, offered little comfort, only the cold embrace of concrete and the lingering smell of fish from a nearby market. It was a world away from the warm, if troubled, home she remembered in Ganghwa Island.
A choked sob escaped her lips, the sound swallowed by the vast emptiness of the night. In the dream, her father's face had been as clear as day – weathered, lined with worry, but still holding that clumsy, fierce love she remembered so well. He had been scolding her, his voice rough with the familiar edge of frustration, but laced with an undercurrent of affection. It was a voice she hadn't heard since that terrible vacation day, the argument still ringing fresh in her mind before the news of the accident had crashed down upon them all.
Now, awake and alone in this alien body, the memory felt like a cruel taunt. She glanced down at her hands, small and delicate, the nails neatly trimmed – a stark contrast to the calloused, work-worn hands she remembered. The smooth, tanned skin of her slender arms, the slight swell of her chest beneath the white sailor uniform top... it was all wrong. This wasn't her. This body, this life, felt like a bizarre, unwanted costume.
Another sob wracked her frame, this one louder, tinged with a desperate, keening quality. The tears streamed down her cheeks, hot against the cool night air. She pressed the heels of her hands against her eyes, trying to stem the flow, to regain some semblance of control, but it was useless. The grief, the guilt, the sheer, overwhelming wrongness of it all poured out of her in a torrent.
The space between her top and skirt, revealing a sliver of her belly, added to her vulnerability. She wrapped her arms around herself, a futile attempt to ward off the cold, both external and internal. She was a stranger in a strange land, trapped in a body that felt alien, haunted by the ghosts of a life she could never reclaim.
"Why?" she whispered, the word a raw, broken plea lost in the darkness. Why had she been ripped from everything she knew, everything she was? Why had she been thrust into this… this mockery of existence? She thought about her mother, and the memory of that kitchen knife caused her stomach to drop with anxiety. She wondered if her family was still alive, and what they were doing now. She remembered her life and cried, feeling like a child who couldn't go home.
The grief felt like a physical weight, pressing down on her chest, making it hard to breathe. She sank to her knees, the rough concrete scraping against her skin, but the physical pain was a welcome distraction from the turmoil inside. She was Shuukyou, the Nekomata without a tail, the girl who brought disaster, the child who couldn't be honest with the people she loved. And right now, in this lonely alley, she was utterly, hopelessly lost.
