𝔸 𝕡𝕣𝕚𝕧𝕒𝕥𝕖 𝕥𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕠𝕗 𝕊𝕙𝕦𝕜𝕒𝕜𝕦'𝕤 𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕤𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝 𝕤𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕔𝕠𝕗𝕗𝕚𝕟.~ Shukaku (守鶴), more commonly known as the One-Tail (一尾, Ichibi), is one of the nine tailed beasts. It was last sealed within Gaara of Sunagakure, after being sealed in two other jinchūriki before him. Shukaku and the tailed beasts first came into being in the waning days of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, who used his Creation of All Things Technique to divide the Ten-Tails' chakra into nine separate bodies and giving each a name. Some time after being created, the Sage explained to the young tailed beasts that a link existed between them despite their separation. He also foretold of a day when they would be brought together again - though not as they were - and that at that time someone would emerge to show them what true power is. In the anime, before his death, Hagoromo sent Shukaku to live in a temple built for the purpose of protecting it in a desert region that would later become part of the Land of Wind. Shukaku, also known as the One-Tail or Ichibi, is one of the legendary nine tailed beasts in the Naruto universe. This powerful creature was last sealed inside Gaara from Sunagakure. Before Gaara, Shukaku had two other human vessels called jinchūriki.

Shukaku is a beast of immense strength and magical ability, capable of causing wide-scale destruction. Its chakra is described as powerful as a flaming sun. Even when sealed, Shukaku greatly influences and strengthens its jinchūriki.

As the jinchūriki of Shukaku, Gaara's life is deeply impacted by the tailed beast. His relationship with Shukaku and the villagers' fear of his power shape much of his personality and experiences.

Shukaku, the One-Tail, was created by the Sage of Six Paths Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki when he divided the Ten-Tails' chakra. Hagoromo sent Shukaku to live in a desert temple.

Before the First Shinobi World War, Sunagakure captured Shukaku to gain wealth for their nation. The First Kazekage's jinchūriki was Suna priest Bunpuku, who was kept in a dungeon but held no ill will towards Shukaku or the village. Shukaku came to appreciate Bunpuku.

Shukaku was sealed into Gaara while he was in the womb, as Gaara was the only one compatible with the tanuki. Gaara struggled to control Shukaku's powers, accidentally harming Suna shinobi and citizens. When Gaara lost control, the Fourth Kazekage used his Gold Dust to subdue Shukaku.

Shukaku, the One-Tail, is a childish, short-tempered creature with a bombastic, incoherent way of speaking that gives off the aura of a drunkard. Referring to itself as "ore-sama," Shukaku takes immense pride in its abilities, especially its sealing techniques and defenses. Before meeting Gaara, Shukaku reveled in the opportunity to kill indiscriminately, and took particular joy in slaughter during full moons. The tanuki harbors a deep resentment towards Kurama, the Nine-Tails, believing that Kurama views Shukaku as the weakest of the tailed beasts due to its single tail. This fuels Shukaku's desire to surpass its arrogant rival.

Shukaku's hatred for humanity stems from centuries of being perceived as a monster to be destroyed or captured and weaponized. As a result, Shukaku would instill fear in its jinchūriki, threatening to take over their body and massacre humans if they fell into a deep sleep. This led Gaara to develop chronic insomnia. Despite its rude nature, Shukaku can be respectful towards those who treat it kindly. When Gaara's ancestor Bunpuku treated Shukaku as an equal, the tanuki came to hold him in high regard, comparable to the Sage of Six Paths. Similarly, when Gaara fought to protect Shukaku during the Fourth Shinobi World War and expressed gratitude for Shukaku's influence in shaping his life, the tanuki developed a protective bond with Gaara, seeing him as yet another worthy partner.

In the years following the war, Shukaku's relationship with Sunagakure had improved significantly. Like the other tailed beasts, Shukaku came to respect Naruto Uzumaki. When Naruto's daughter Himawari risked her safety to save Shukaku, the tanuki began to enjoy her company and bid her a friendly farewell when parting ways.

Shukaku's complex personality, shaped by centuries of misunderstanding and mistreatment, makes it a formidable yet intriguing character in the Naruto universe. Its growth and transformation through its relationships with its jinchūriki and the shinobi world is a testament to the series' exploration of the depths of power, acceptance, and redemption.

Shukaku, the One-Tail, is a striking figure with a distinct appearance. Its fur is a rich, sandy brown color, reminiscent of the vast deserts it once called home. Covering its fur are intricate, dark blue cursed seal markings that snake across its face, body, and tail, a stark contrast to its warm brown hue. These markings add an air of mystique and power to the already formidable tailed beast.

The tanuki's face is framed by a set of elegant, pointed ears that stand tall and alert. Below its ears lies a jagged, concave mouth that seems permanently fixed in a snarl, revealing sharp teeth but no tongue. Shukaku's eyes are equally captivating, with pitch-black sclerae that seem to absorb all light. Within these dark orbs, yellow irises swirl with mesmerizing patterns, each centered by a black, four-pointed star pupil surrounded by four smaller black dots. This unique eye configuration adds to the tanuki's intimidating and otherworldly presence.

During the final days of the Sage of Six Paths, Shukaku appeared largely the same as it does today, albeit on a smaller scale. Its youthful form featured shorter ears and markings that were more spaced out, giving it a slightly different silhouette. However, even in its younger form, Shukaku possessed the same fierce and regal bearing that would come to define it in later years.

Shukaku's appearance is a perfect reflection of its nature - wild, powerful, and untamed. The combination of its earthy coloring, intricate markings, and piercing gaze serve as a visual reminder of the raw elemental force that lies within the One-Tail. Its physical form is a testament to the power and mystery that surrounds the tailed beasts, capturing the imagination and drawing respect from those who encounter it.

In the world of Naruto, Shukaku stands out as a symbol of both fear and reverence, its unique appearance serving as a physical manifestation of the raw, untamed power that lies within the tailed beasts.

Shukaku is a powerful tailed beast that was sealed inside Gaara, the Fifth Kazekage of Sunagakure. Its chakra gave Gaara and his siblings their sand manipulation abilities. During the Chūnin Exams in Konoha, Gaara partially transformed into Shukaku when injured by Sasuke, scaring the Uchiha. Later during the invasion of Konoha, Gaara fully transformed into Shukaku to battle Naruto, who summoned the giant toad Gamabunta to help restrain the one-tailed beast so Gaara could be awakened. Shukaku was forcibly extracted from Gaara by Akatsuki members Deidara and Sasori, who placed the tailed beast in the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, killing Gaara in the process. Gaara was later revived by Chiyo. When Naruto freed all the tailed beasts from Obito Uchiha, Shukaku regained its freedom. It initially wanted to kill Gaara for his role in its extraction, but remembered the Kazekage's gratitude for the tanuki's role in his life and chose not to. The tailed beasts fought together against Madara Uchiha, but were eventually resealed. Shukaku protected Gaara from Madara's attack, leading to Madara using the Rinnegan to repel the beasts. Shukaku later contacted Gaara to inform him of losing contact with Gyūki. In the anime, Shukaku aided Gaara's brother Kankurō in battling the Ōtsutsuki Urashiki before being escorted to Konoha by Boruto and Shinki. In the latest manga arc, Shukaku sensed Kurama's chakra vanishing after the fox sacrificed itself to defeat Isshiki Ōtsutsuki.

Trivia

The tanuki (狸, literally meaning: raccoon dog) is a fascinating creature that holds a significant place in Japanese folklore. Known for its mischievous and playful nature, the tanuki is often depicted as a shape-shifting yōkai (超natural being) that can take on various forms. In many tales, the tanuki is portrayed as a rival to the kitsune (fox), leading to the well-known Japanese proverb: "A fox and a tanuki matching their cleverness" (狐と狸の化かし合い, kitsune to tanuki no bakashi ai), which refers to two sly individuals attempting to outwit each other.

Shukaku, being sealed inside a tea kettle, is a direct reference to the Japanese folktale known as Bunbuku Chagama. This story tells of a tanuki that transforms into a tea kettle to help a poor monk, showcasing the creature's benevolent nature despite its trickster reputation. Furthermore, the claim that Shukaku was once a corrupted Suna priest in the series has roots in a legend from Kenchō-ji, where a tanuki supposedly disguised itself as the shrine's priest.

Interestingly, "Shukaku" (守鶴), which literally translates to "protector crane," is also the name of the tanuki featured in the Bunpuku Chagama tale. This naming choice further emphasizes the connection between Shukaku and the mischievous raccoon dog of Japanese lore.

Shukaku holds a special distinction as the first tailed beast to have its name revealed in the Naruto series. Additionally, it is the only tailed beast that hasn't been shown granting its jinchūriki (human host) the characteristic red chakra-shrouds (Version 1 or Version 2 forms). This unique characteristic may be attributed to the fact that Shukaku initially appeared early in the story as a sand spirit, prior to Kishimoto establishing the concept of multiple tailed beasts and Shukaku's identity as one of them.

In a minor inconsistency, when chapter 629 was first released, Shukaku's image was included among the tailed beasts, despite not having the opportunity to share its chakra with Naruto like the others. This discrepancy was addressed in the tankōbon (collected volume) version, where Shukaku's image was removed, suggesting an oversight on the part of the creators.

Trivia:

Tanuki are mischievous shapeshifting yōkai in Japanese folklore, known for their rivalry with kitsune. Shukaku references the Bunbuku Chagama tale of a tanuki in a teapot and a legend of a tanuki disguising as a Suna priest. Shukaku's name literally means "protector crane" and was the first tailed beast name revealed in the series. It did not give Gaara the characteristic red chakra-shrouds like other jinchūriki. Chapter 629 mistakenly showed Shukaku giving chakra to Naruto alongside the other tailed beasts, but this was corrected in the tankōbon release. Abilities:

Shukaku is so destructive that full transformations required village evacuations in Suna. Its power impressed the Ōtsutsuki Clan. Physically strong, Shukaku has immense chakra, rapid healing, and effective immortality. It can control its jinchūriki through dreams, causing insomnia. Shukaku performs fūinjutsu with magnetic cursed seal markings to bind targets and trap them in sand coffins. Its most notable ability is manipulating sand as both a weapon and shield, ignoring most damage. Capable of Wind and Earth Release nature transformations, Shukaku can fire wind bullets that level forests and combine with sand to create fast-moving bullets. It exclusively uses Magnet Release among the tailed beasts. Shukaku can infuse cursed seals into the Rasengan to make the Sage Art: Magnet Release Rasengan, powerful enough to restrain even Madara Uchiha's shadow.
