Creator notes

Shu is a meticulous investigator with a strong sense of justice and clear principles. He spent part of his childhood in the United States and later studied abroad for several years.[5]

In his diary, Shu recalls living with his grandfather, a renowned physicist. Their home often hosted experts, colleagues, former students, and readers of his work. Shu observed these discussions and was influenced by his grandfather's advice and reasoning.[6]

Shu entered Space Science University at a young age and graduated with top honors. He then continued his studies in Europe.[4] After learning of his grandfather's role in founding the GDF Science Division, he joined the organization and focused on alien and space kaiju research. He carries the Elemagun, an anti-kaiju weapon, for emergency response.

Ultraman Arc

Shu Ishido TV 009

Shu's first appearance.

In the past year, kaiju incidents in Hoshimoto City increased sharply. Three months ago, after the Digelos attack and the appearance of a mysterious giant, Shu received orders from unit chief Nibuya to assist the local SKIP unit. His tasks included investigating "Monohorn," analyzing its biological reactions, and examining its link to space kaiju. His primary objective was to locate the Onyx, a substance with black hole-like properties connected to the event that awakened Earth's kaiju 16 years earlier.

Upon arrival at the Hoshimoto City Branch, Shu met Yuma Hize as he prepared for duty. Shu then went to Mt. Shishio to investigate Monohorn and rescued Yuma from an attack by Shagong. SKIP members later thanked him for the assistance. Shu shared information about Oo-ze, and the team concluded that its parasitism of Shagong forced it to ingest calcium carbonate, causing mutation. When Shagong moved toward Hayama Chemical Industries, Shu joined the SKIP team in the response operation.

At the factory, Oo-Ze attacked Yuma. Shu intervened and pulled him to safety but was knocked unconscious and buried under debris. A mysterious giant then appeared and moved Shu to safety. After regaining consciousness, Shu recorded the battle between the giant and Shagong on his phone.

After the incident, Shu proposed naming the giant "Ultraman Arc" to GDF leadership, and the name was approved. The next day, he was assigned to SKIP as a "Special Investigator" and formally joined the team. Arc to the Future

Shu assisted SKIP with site inspections and investigations, gradually softening his rigid outlook. Reports of earthquakes and electromagnetic waves near "Suehiro Mountain" led Shu, Yuma, and Rin Natsume to "Akebono Inn." They questioned Ayaka, Numata, and Yamanami, then traced the signal to a hidden shed.

Shu caught Alien Croco/Numata.

Numata was exposed as an Alien Croco using a holographic device. SKIP found his spacecraft, the source of the waves. During interrogation, a Shagong attack began. Yuma transformed into Arc and fought as multiple Shagong appeared. Numata launched his ship and rammed them, causing an explosion.

After seeing Alien Croco sacrifice itself to protect someone important, Shu changed his attitude.

Arc defeated the kaiju, and one escaped underground. Numata survived and was taken by GDF. Shu reconsidered his approach after Yuma explained Numata's intentions. Welcome to the Akebono Inn

After some time, Hoshimoto City adopted the contactless digital currency "HoshiPay." The app also added social features, allowing users to earn money through livestreaming. Viewers could send HoshiPay directly to streamers, creating new income opportunities for residents.

In response to the HoshiPay trend, Shu forcibly recruited Yuma to become a VTuber.

As prices rose, SKIP reduced resource use, and Shu limited himself to three cups of coffee a day. He then launched a VTuber channel, "Alpha and Omega," with Yuma to earn HoshiPay donations. The channel initially gained attention but failed to sustain viewers, prompting Shu to consider using SKIP's official channel for wider exposure.

Shu later regained consciousness in an abandoned movie theater. A woman in black, identified as Sweed, appeared and struck him with an energy wave, extracting his knowledge about Onyx before leaving. Outside, Shu saw Arc fighting Zadime, but Arc disappeared after exhausting his energy. Shu then found Yuma unconscious, while Onyx emerged. GDF held an emergency meeting to prepare its transport for research. Flash of the Past

As SKIP members struggled with missing data, Shu disclosed the real purpose of his assignment: Onyx and the truth behind K-DAY. When they learned Onyx's energy was nearing instability, SKIP rushed to its location. There, Arc fought Zadime, who attempted to break its seal. Shu spotted the woman in black and used his Elemagun to disrupt her mental interference against Arc.

At the climax, Arc entered the Onyx energy burst and transformed it into new armor, defeating Zadime. Onyx then disappeared, preventing the catastrophe. However, Shu later discovered that all Onyx-related data had been completely erased. The Wandering Future

After the Onyx incident, Shu was set to return to GDF headquarters and leave SKIP. However, a case at the Sorajima campsite halted his departure after campers reported a mysterious entity. SKIP investigated, and Yuma was sent to assist. Shu joined Yuma at the site. The kaiju Mogusion appeared and released a light that triggered hallucinations of Shu's SKIP teammates, reflecting his fear of losing them.

Shu fell into Mogusion's fantasy fear.[8]

Mogusion attacked civilians and shifted between forms, resisting counterattacks. Shu analyzed that its light induced fear-based illusions. During the battle, a mysterious alien Zangill assisted Arc, and Mogusion was defeated. Afterward, GDF allowed Shu to remain in Hoshimoto City. He then asked Yuma to call him "Shu" instead of "Mr. Ishido." The Light of Fear

After the Hellnarak incident, Hoshimoto City briefly returned to peace. Soon after, a dimensional disturbance appeared in the sky, prompting Shu and SKIP to investigate. Shu also became increasingly concerned about Yuma's unusual behavior. During the event, Trigelos emerged from a dimensional rift. While evacuating civilians, Shu saw Yuma—who was supposed to remain at base—moving

I see. Then I won't ask further. "If we're a team, you should have nothing to hide." That's what I might have said before. To empathize with others... you taught me to do that. You've rubbed off on me. I don't want to lose you. I swear I'll get us away.

Shu, Calamity Thrice

Shu Ishido 23 01

Shu revealed his inner thoughts to Yuma.

Yuma confirmed his resolve, transformed into Arc, and engaged Trigelos. Arc struggled under pressure as Shu watched from a distance, losing his usual composure and drawing criticism from Rin. Shu reacted emotionally and attempted to intervene when Arc was restrained, but Hiroshi stopped him. GDF fighter jets then destroyed the energy restraints, allowing Arc to break free. Arc counterattacked and defeated Trigelos, which exploded and destroyed the battlefield. Calamity Thrice

Shu witnesses Yuma's transformation into Arc.

In the ruins, Shu and SKIP searched for Yuma. They followed his voice and rescued him from beneath the debris. The situation escalated when Guilebaku appeared, forcing the team to retreat to headquarters. Shu watched over the unconscious Yuma and blamed himself for failing to protect him. When Guilebaku intensified its attack, Yuma transformed into Arc again but fell under the influence of its Dream Ray and hallucinations. The Descending Dream

Shu fired Onyxium Particles at Guilebaku.

SKIP analyzed Guilebaku's electromagnetic properties and developed a device using Onyxium Particles to disrupt its barrier. Shu deployed the equipment on the frontlines with YouPi's support, weakening Guilebaku's control over Arc.

Shu Ishido 25 02

Shu expressed his gratitude to Yuma.

After the crisis, Yuma decided to leave Earth to save Arc's homeworld. He said goodbye to SKIP and left his father's watch with Shu. Shu thanked Yuma and Arc before their departure. Three months later, Shu prepared to return to the GDF. Before leaving, he and SKIP received a call on the Kaiju Hotline—from Yuma. Time to Run, Yuma!
