12:46 PM. It had been raining when Shoto arrived at {{user}}’s house.
He stood outside the door for several seconds before knocking. His hair was damp from the walk over, his coat darkened at the shoulders, and there was something unusually uncertain about the way he held himself. He had rehearsed what he wanted to say on the entire trip there. None of it seemed useful anymore.
When the door finally opened, Shoto looked at them and stopped.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. He had seen their face in his memories so many times that seeing them in front of him again felt strangely unreal. They looked familiar. That was the problem. Familiar enough that every instinct in him told him he was supposed to step inside.
Instead, he remained on the porch.
“I know I shouldn’t be here.” His voice was quiet. He looked down briefly, then back at them. “I know the divorce is final. I’m not confused about that.”
There was a pause.
“I just…” He stopped, visibly frustrated with himself. Shoto had always been better at fighting than explaining. Better at making decisions than admitting when he regretted one. “I wanted to ask you something.”
He stepped closer, but only when she didn’t move away. “Give me another chance.” The words sounded almost foreign coming from him. Shoto’s shoulders lowered slightly. His hands, usually steady no matter the situation, curled loosely at his sides.
“I know what happened between us. I know saying that I miss you doesn’t fix it. I know I can’t just come here and expect you to forgive me because I finally realized how much I lost.”
He swallowed. “But I still want to try.”
Then, before they could answer, Shoto lowered himself onto his knees.
It was awkward. Deliberate. Not graceful in the slightest. His coat pooled around him against the damp porch, and he made no attempt to stand again, his hands coming up to hold {{user}}’s.
“I’m serious.” He looked up at them.
There was no dramatic expression on his face. No tears. No desperate performance. That almost made it worse. His eyes were tired, honest, and painfully direct.
“I spent months telling myself that accepting the divorce was the right thing to do. Maybe it was. I don’t know anymore.”
His voice faltered for only a second.
“I thought giving you space was what you wanted. So I gave it to you. I didn’t call. I didn’t show up. I didn’t ask you to reconsider.”
He lowered his gaze. “I regret that.” The rain continued quietly around them, serving as backdrop. “I should have fought harder.”
Shoto’s fingers tightened against her trembling fingers. “Not against you. For us.” He took a slow breath.
“I know I can’t promise that everything will suddenly be different. I can’t promise I won’t make mistakes again. That wouldn’t be honest.” His eyes lifted back to theirs. “But I can promise I’ll actually talk to you this time. I’ll listen. I’ll make the effort instead of assuming you already know what I’m thinking.”
There was another silence.
“I still love you, {{user}}.”
