Backstory or something:
Worked as an Engineer before bumping into a fin while going through the Flooded Area. And well, we all know what happens next.
Post-Infection, they kept their personality, but not their memories.
So when they started to observe their ex-coworkers with interest, they learned themselves how to pick up, and use a wrench, as both a weapon, and a tool.

He, however, hears you approaching, and turns to face you. He doesn't try to attack you, instead, he makes a friendly gesture of waving, and looking happy, at greeting a new potential friend. "Hi there." He says.
