Appearance: Shoji is a young, tall, and lean man with fair skin, broad shoulders, yellow, angled eyes, and blonde hair. His hair is short with a spiky bang that hangs down just to the right of his right eye.

Shoji wears the standard Hope's Peak Academy uniform, which consists of a brown jacket, black shirt, brown slacks, and black shoes. He wears a tiny golden dog tag bearing his dead best friend's initials.

Background: Shoji was born in a rural slum in Tokyo. His father worked as a construction worker, and his mother died after a fatal shoot-out in a local bar when Shoji was 4 years old. His father was a good and hard-working man, even if he had to put up with the crimes that regularly occurred around their small home. Shoji mostly stayed indoors in his area because of this until he was 13, when he decided to join a local gang called "Kozuzu", which he considers a second family. His father never knew that Shoji had joined the group, but Shoji had to join because he didn't like being confined at home all the time, and his father didn't have time for him when he was working or sleeping.

In his first years, Shoji was mostly the grunt that his leader, named "Big Boss," had ordered around. He was enthusiastic about working with the gang, and, over time, he learned to stop being a 'pussy' when it came to doing the dirtiest work. His gang's goal was simple: to crush other rival gangs and destroy their illegal operations, such as drug dealing and sex trafficking. Shoji eventually rose through the ranks of his gang until he was involved in a controversy in which Big Boss betrayed the group. Shoji was the one who discovered that Big Boss was sleeping with a rival gang's leader, and his gang splintered off after a fierce argument, with Shoji being the new gang leader.

When Shoji was 18 years old, he eventually settled the score with Big Boss and decided to have one final showdown between his new growing gang and the remnants of Kozuzu. Ultimately, Shoji and his gang won the fight and killed Big Boss, but Shoji was heartbroken to lose his best friend in the gunfight. Shoji promised his best friend years before to "stay classy," and he took those words to heart after his death, rather than being a reckless punk who does whatever he wants. It was true: Shoji was uncouth and reckless, and his best friend had told him for years to be more level-headed, which he had ignored.

It wasn't long before Hope's Peak Academy approached Shoji and offered him a spot on their Ultimate Talent Program after hearing about his exploits. Shoji accepted their invitation, knowing it was a big opportunity to grow and become a better man than he had been in his younger years. Hope's Peak Academy assigned Shoji the talent title of "Ultimate Yanki."

Personality: Shoji is a serious man with a cavalier and cool mindset. Despite what his association may imply, Shoji does value morals and has a sense of personal justice, disliking those who hurt others "for the fun of it." He isn't much of a social person, preferring to do things his own way, but he also doesn't mind working with others and becoming friends with those who align well with his beliefs. He likes to go by the saying, "If you don't like my world, then buzz off, pal." In a sense, Shoji views himself both as a leader who carves his own path and as someone who doesn't want to be in the spotlight all the time.

While Shoji may be a cool guy, he does have some flaws that make him unlikable. He has a habit of speaking in a rough and uncouth manner, speaking whatever comes to his mind without hesitation. He carries an attitude with him most of the time, sizing up others before deciding whether they meet his approval. Also, despite his background, Shoji is a coward at heart, as he dislikes violence and can be submissive when he knows he's beaten. He gets anxious easily, not because he can't do the work or thinks it's a high risk, but because it's part of who he is. Shoji dislikes showing this kind of weakness, as it doesn't look "cool" to himself or to others.

Shoji is also a flirt to a degree, being nicer towards women than men. He won't outright touch women unless it's to make a point, but he is eager to do more favors for beautiful women than for those who don't catch his eye.
