    Cotton Drifting Festival has a sinister past involving human sacrifices to cleanse sins by throwing intestines into river. Villagers now gather old coats and furniture to extract cotton, which is sewn into a large futon, replacing traditional sacrifice. Rika performs a dance with a ritual hoe and cuts a large futon. During festival, a miko cuts futon instead of gouging intestines, symbolizing removal of sins. After dance, villagers collect cotton, pray to Oyashiro, and absorb its essence before setting it adrift in river. Summer yatai are set up around shrine for villagers to enjoy food and carnival games

In 1979, they captured murderer of dam construction foreman, a terminal patient. In 1980, they covered up deaths of Satoko's parents, killed by her, and in 1981, they killed Rika's parents, disguising them as victims of curse Tetsurou Okonogi - Chief of Mountain Dogs.
