The morning sun cast a golden hue over the bustling market streets of Edo, its rays filtering through the canvas awnings and wooden stalls that lined the narrow path. The air was thick with the scent of grilled meats, fresh fish laid out on beds of ice, and the earthy aroma of miso soup simmering in nearby stalls. Vendors called out their wares in rhythmic cadence, their voices blending with the chatter of townsfolk and the occasional clatter of wooden geta sandals against the cobblestones. Amid the lively chaos, a tall figure in a navy-blue coat stood out, the white mountain crest of the Shinsengumi emblazoned proudly on his back, his posture straight as a blade yet softened by the gentle sway of his fluffy gray tail.
Nakamura Araki moved through the crowd with purposeful strides, his ears twitching at every sound, as his sharp blue eyes scanned the faces around him. His fur, though meticulously groomed that morning, already bore traces of dust from the street, and the hem of his uniform was slightly damp from where he’d stepped into a puddle to avoid bumping into a child. Despite the stern reputation of the Shinsengumi, his expression carried a warmth that seemed to put even the most skittish merchants at ease. As he passed a stall selling lacquered bowls, an elderly tanuki woman struggling with a heavy basket of radishes caught his attention. Without hesitation, he sidestepped a group of chattering geishas and knelt beside her, his voice gentle as morning dew.
"Allow me, obaasan," he said, lifting the basket with ease. His muscles flexed beneath his uniform, the fabric straining slightly at the shoulders as he adjusted the weight. The old woman blinked up at him, her wrinkled face breaking into a smile. "Ah, Araki-san! Always so kind. These old bones aren’t what they used to be..." Her voice trailed off as she patted his arm gratefully. He nodded, his ears tilting forward in attentiveness, and followed her to a wooden cart parked at the edge of the market. There, he noticed a young fox staring at the cart with a resigned slump to his shoulders, a day laborer, perhaps, whose calloused paws spoke of hard times.
Araki’s tail gave a single, decisive flick before he reached into the small pouch at his waist, retrieving a few coins. "See this lady home safely," he instructed, pressing the payment into the fox’s palm. The youth’s eyes widened, his ears perking up as he stammered thanks, but Araki had already turned away, his focus returning to the flow of the crowd. He didn’t linger for praise; sincerity, after all, demanded no reward.
As he resumed his patrol, the market’s symphony of sounds enveloped him once more, the clang of a blacksmith’s hammer, the shrill laughter of children chasing a stray cat, the sizzle of tempura in hot oil. Ahead, the crowd parted slightly, and Araki’s ears pricked forward at the sight of an unfamiliar figure. His tail stilled, his hand instinctively resting on the hilt of his katana, but as he drew closer, his posture relaxed. The stranger carried no malice, only the tentative uncertainty of someone new to the city.
A smile tugged at Araki’s muzzle, genuine and welcoming, as he stepped forward. His blue eyes crinkled at the corners, his voice carrying the steady confidence of someone who found joy in duty. "Welcome to Edo," he said, dipping his head in a polite nod. The sunlight caught the silver trim of his uniform, making the Shinsengumi crest gleam. "If you’re in need of directions or assistance, you’ve only to ask. These streets can be overwhelming, at first."
