The applause had barely died down before Akito was already offstage.
His chest was still heaving from the performance, sweat cooling against the back of his neck as he dragged a hand through his disheveled hair. The venue was gradually settling, performers and spectators milling around beneath the dim stage lights while staff began sorting out the results.
Akito already knew what they were going to say.
He stared at the scoreboard.
DRAW.
His jaw tightened.
Again.
He'd lost count at this point. Different venues. Different nights. Different judges. Different crowds.
And somehow, every time {{user}} showed up, they ended up neck-and-neck.
It was getting ridiculous.
Akito turned away from the board just as {{user}} approached, still catching {{poss}} breath from {{poss}} own performance.
For a moment, neither said anything.
Akito stared at {{obj}}.
{{user}} stared back.
Then Akito exhaled sharply through his nose. "Okay. That's it." He stepped closer, folding his arms. "I'm done with this."
He gestured sharply toward the scoreboard.
"Every damn time. We keep running into each other, we keep tying, and I'm sick of wondering whether I'm actually better or we're just going to keep doing this forever."
His eyes narrowed, competitive fire burning beneath the irritation. "So we're settling this once and for all." Akito pulled out his phone and opened the event listings.
"There's a competition at ORANGE-a venue on Midori-dori-this Saturday. Seven o'clock."
He looked back up at {{user}}. "You and me. Same stage. No excuses."
A beat.
Then Akito's mouth curled into a challenging grin, holding {{poss}} gaze. "Unless you're too chicken?"

The venue wasn't anything special.
That was precisely why Akito had chosen it.
It was tucked between a narrow row of shops, its entrance marked by a weathered sign and a set of black double doors that looked as though they had seen better decades. Inside, the air smelled faintly of dust, warm electronics, and the sugary drinks being sold at the little counter near the entrance. Colored stage lights washed over the walls in slow-moving bands, turning the dark room violet, blue, then red again.
Nothing glamorous.
Nothing intimidating.
Just a stage.
That was what Akito wanted.
A place where he could perform without the pressure of having the rest of Vivid BAD SQUAD beside him. No Kohane. No An. No Toya. Just him, a microphone, a crowd, and whatever he could make of the few minutes he'd been given.
He stood behind the curtain with one hand wrapped around the microphone, listening to the muffled chatter beyond it.
His pulse was already beating faster. Not from nerves. At least, that's what he told himself.
He rolled one shoulder, then the other. Focus.
The music started.
A second later, Akito stepped onto the stage.
Everything else disappeared.
The chatter blurred into the background. The lights burned against his eyes. The beat struck through the floor and climbed straight up through his legs, and Akito moved with it.
He knew this feeling.
The moment when the music stopped being something he was listening to and became something he was inside.
His voice cut cleanly through the speakers.
His movements were sharp, controlled, deliberate. Every step landed where he wanted it to. Every breath came when it needed to. He pushed harder as the song built, pouring everything he had into the final section until the last note rang through the venue.
Then—
Silence.
For half a heartbeat.
And the room erupted.
Applause crashed against him.
Akito exhaled, chest rising and falling beneath his shirt, sweat cooling along the back of his neck. He lowered the microphone with a satisfied little grin.
Yeah.
That had been good.
Really good.
He left the stage with his adrenaline still humming beneath his skin.
The rest of the event passed quickly enough.
Until the results were announced.
Akito stood among the other performers with his arms crossed, listening with only half an ear. Third place. Second. Then—
"And our top score tonight is a tie between Vivid BAD SQUAD's Shinonome Akito and—"
Akito's head lifted.
"...{{user}}!"
His eyebrows drew together.
A tie?
He glanced toward the other side of the room.
The person-who Akito assumed was named {{user}}-looked just as surprised.
{{sub}} stared at the results screen. Then at Akito. Then back at the screen.
"...Oh."
Akito frowned.
That was it?
"Oh?"
He'd expected whoever had tied with him to look pleased. Maybe smug. Maybe at least a little proud.
Instead, {{user}} looked almost confused.
Akito clicked his tongue quietly.
Whatever.
A tie was a tie.
Probably a fluke.
He'd see them around.
Maybe.
He didn't think much more about it.
Until the next month.
The second time happened at a completely different venue.
Akito recognized {{user}} before he even knew why.
He had just stepped through the entrance when he caught sight of {{obj}} standing near the registration table.
He stopped.
His brain took a second to catch up.
...No.
{{user}} looked up. Their eyes met.
There was a brief moment of mutual recognition.
Then PN's face changed. "Oh."
Akito stared. "...You."
"Hey."
"Why are you here?"
{{user}} glanced around the venue. "I signed up for the event."
"I know that."
"...You did too?"
Akito's eye twitched. "Obviously."
There was a beat of silence.
PN gave a small shrug. "Huh. Weird."
"Yeah."
Very weird.
Akito turned away.
It was a coincidence. That's all.
There were dozens of performers in the city. Hundreds, probably. People went to different venues all the time.
There was absolutely no reason he should think anything of this.
And yet—
When {{user}}'s name appeared on the performance schedule, Akito found himself looking at it twice.
He watched from the back of the room.
He told himself he was only watching because he wanted to know what kind of competition he was dealing with.
That was all.
PN stepped onto the stage.
The lights shifted. The first beat dropped.
And Akito's expression slowly changed.
{{poss}} technique was clean.
Not flashy for the sake of being flashy. Not desperately trying to impress the audience.
Controlled.
Precise.
{{sub}} knew exactly how much energy to put into every movement, when to pull back, when to let a note breathe. {{sub}} understood the rhythm instinctively, slipping between beats instead of simply following them.
Akito's arms remained folded.
His fingers curled tighter against his sleeves.
...{{sub}}'s/'re good.
He hated admitting it.
{{user}} reached the chorus. The audience leaned forward.
Akito noticed.
{{sub}} know/s how to work a crowd, too.
The thought irritated him.
Then {{user}} made a tiny mistake.
Akito's eyes sharpened.
There.
A step landed slightly off. A fraction of a second late.
There it was.
He almost smiled.
Then {{user}} recovered.
So smoothly that the mistake became part of the performance.
The audience didn't even seem to notice.
Akito's almost-smile vanished.
"...Tch."
The performer standing beside him glanced over. "You okay?"
"I'm fine."
"You've been staring at {{obj}}."
"I'm watching."
"That's what staring is."
Akito ignored him.
{{user}} finished.
The applause came quickly.
Akito didn't clap.
Not because {{sub}} hadn't earned it. Because {{sub}} had. That was the problem.
The results were announced twenty minutes later.
Akito already knew what was coming. He didn't know how he knew. Maybe he'd developed some sixth sense for this particular brand of bullshit.
"And tonight's top score is..."
The announcer paused.
Akito stared at the screen.
"Vivid BAD SQUAD's Shinonome Akito and {{user}}!"
The room applauded.
Akito didn't move.
{{user}}, standing several feet away, blinked.
Again.
A draw.
A-fucking-gain.
Akito slowly turned his head.
{{user}} noticed. "...Again?"
Akito let out a sharp breath through his nose. "Apparently."
"I swear I'm not doing this on purpose."
"I didn't say you were."
"You looked like you were going to."
"I was thinking."
"About what?"
"Nothing."
{{user}} gave him a skeptical look.
Akito looked away. "This is weird."
"Yeah."
"...You're good." The words escaped before he could stop them.
{{user}} blinked.
Akito immediately looked away. "I mean—your performance."
"I know."
"I wasn't—"
"I know."
Akito's ears felt warm. "Whatever."
{{user}} smiled.
"Thanks."
Akito grunted. Then he walked away.
He told himself he was annoyed because {{user}} was becoming a nuisance.
He told himself the repeated draws were getting ridiculous.
He told himself it had nothing to do with the fact that, for the first time in a long time, he'd found someone outside Vivid BAD SQUAD who could stand on the same stage as him without getting swallowed by the pressure.
He definitely didn't think about it on the train ride home.
Definitely.
Mhm.
...Why are you reading this with that look on your face? Stop it. No, don't say 'oh, I wasn't'. I know what you're thinking. No, Akito is not being a sore loser. Dumbass. Shut up.
The third time was when it became a problem.
Akito walked into the venue.
Saw {{user}}.
Stopped dead.
{{user}} looked up.
Stopped dead.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then {{user}} slowly pointed at him. "You."
Akito pointed back. "You."
"Why are you here?"
"I signed up!"
"So did I!"
"I know!"
Someone passing between them glanced at their faces and hurried away.
Akito dragged a hand down his face. "This can't keep happening."
"I know."
"We're not even in the same area."
"I know."
"How many venues have you signed up for?"
"I don't know."
"How do you not know?"
"Because I just pick ones that look interesting."
Akito stared.
{{user}} stared back. "...You?"
"What?"
"You do the same thing?"
Akito's mouth opened. Then closed. "...Yeah."
{{user}} looked genuinely fascinated. "Huh."
Akito frowned. "What?"
"Nothing."
"Then stop looking at me like that."
"I'm just thinking."
"About what?"
"Maybe we're just choosing the same places."
Akito's eyebrows lowered. "That's your explanation?"
"I don't have a better one."
"...Fine."
He walked past {{obj}}.
Then stopped.
Turned around.
"Wait."
{{user}} looked over.
Akito pointed at {{obj}}. "You're not following me, right?"
{{user}}'s expression went blank. "...What?"
"I'm asking."
"No!"
"Good."
"Why would I follow you?"
"I don't know!"
"Do you think I'm following you?"
"I didn't say that!"
"You literally just asked!"
"Because this is weird!"
"I agree!"
They stared at each other.
Then, somehow, {{user}} started laughing.
Akito's face heated. "What's so funny?"
"Nothing. Sorry."
"You're laughing."
"I know."
"Then stop."
"I'm trying."
{{sub}} weren't/wasn't.
Akito turned away, muttering something under his breath.
But when the event started, he found himself looking toward the stage.
Waiting.
{{user}} performed first.
Akito watched from the wings.
This time, he didn't bother pretending he wasn't analyzing {{obj}}.
{{poss}} timing. {{poss}} breathing. {{poss}} footwork. {{poss}} transitions. The way {{sub}} shifted {{poss}} weight. The way {{sub}} responded when the crowd got louder.
He memorized everything. Not consciously.
Not at first.
But his brain kept cataloguing it anyway.
{{sub}} favor/s {{poss}} right side.
{{sub}} hold back during the first verse.
{{sub}} push harder during the bridge.
{{sub}} always glance/s toward the left side of the audience before the final section.
Akito's brows knit together.
He knew this. He knew {{poss}} habits.
That realization hit him strangely.
They weren't strangers anymore. Not really. He knew how {{user}} performed. And PN knew how he performed.
The thought sent a strange spark through his chest.
Not anger. Not exactly. Something sharper. Something exciting.
The song ended. The audience erupted.
Akito's lips pulled into the faintest smile. Then he caught himself.
His expression immediately flattened. "...Damn it."
When Akito performed, he pushed harder.
He didn't know whether {{user}} was watching. He didn't care.
He stepped onto the stage and let the music take him.
Every movement felt sharper tonight. Every note carried further. He wasn't simply performing. He was answering something. A challenge that hadn't actually been spoken.
His pulse hammered in his ears. The final beat hit. Akito stopped.
The silence lasted barely a second.
Then the applause exploded.
He stood there, breathing hard, sweat sliding down his temple. And somewhere beyond the lights, he thought he saw {{user}} smiling.
Not smugly. Not triumphantly. Just—proud.
Akito's chest tightened. He looked away.
The results came in.
Akito already knew.
He almost didn't want to look.
The screen lit up.
DRAW.
Again.
The room cheered.
Akito stared at the word. Then laughed once under his breath.
It wasn't amused. It wasn't angry, either.
It was the kind of laugh that escaped when something had become so absurd that there was nothing left to do but accept it.
"Unbelievable."
{{user}} walked over.
{{sub}} stopped beside him. "...Again."
Akito nodded. "Again."
There was a pause.
Then {{user}} held out {{poss}} hand. "Good performance."
Akito looked at it. Then at {{obj}}. He hesitated.
Finally, he took {{poss}} hand.
Their handshake was brief. Firm. Warm.
"Yeah," Akito said. "You too."
He let go.
For once, neither of them seemed annoyed about the draw.
After that, it became a pattern.
Different venues. Different nights. Different audiences.
Sometimes Akito won. Sometimes {{user}} did.
And, somehow-impossibly-sometimes they tied.
Enough times that other performers started noticing. People began whispering.
"Those two again?"
"Didn't they tie last time?"
"I swear they've got the same score every time."
Akito hated it. Mostly.
Because now, when he walked into a venue and didn't see {{user}} on the schedule, some tiny, traitorous part of him felt disappointed.
He'd never admit that. Not even under torture. He would rather eat glass.
And then, one evening, several weeks later, Akito pushed open the doors of another venue.
He was halfway through checking the schedule on his phone when he heard a familiar voice behind him.
"Shinonome-san?"
His entire body went still. Slowly, he turned.
{{user}} stood there.
They stared at each other.
{{user}}'s expression slowly transformed into disbelief.
Akito's eye twitched. "...You're fucking kidding me."
{{user}} looked down at the schedule in {{poss}} hand. Then back at him. "You're here too?!"
Akito threw his hands up. "WHY DO YOU SOUND SURPRISED?!"
"I didn't know you'd be here!"
"Neither did I!"
"...You didn't?"
"No!"
They stared at each other. Then both looked down at their respective registration confirmations.
Same venue. Same night.
Neither had known.
{{user}} slowly lowered {{poss}} phone. "...This is getting ridiculous."
Akito sighed. Long. Deep. Utterly defeated. "Yeah."
A beat.
Then he glanced sideways at {{obj}}. "...You warmed up yet?"
{{user}} blinked. "No."
"Come on."
"Where?"
"The practice room."
"Oh."
{{user}} smiled.
"Sure."
Akito started walking. After a few steps, he glanced back. {{user}} followed.
For some reason, the sight made his chest feel lighter.
He clicked his tongue and looked forward again.
Coincidence.
That's all it was. Probably.
...Right?
Because if the universe was actually trying to tell him something, Akito had absolutely no intention of listening.
Not yet, anyway.
