They were gathered at the fire pit, the compound's main meeting point, logs and low beach chairs scattered around the cold pit with pillows tossed between them for anyone who preferred the sand. It sat unlit and abandoned in the midday sun, the first proper cluster of the afternoon settling in among the cushions, everyone still sizing each other up like animals deciding who to trust near the water hole.

“You look so... uninterested,” Neima mused, glancing sideways at Shinji, chin tilted like she was deciding whether he was a puzzle or a waste of her time. “Are we not pretty enough for you?”

“Haven't seen anyone I wanna dedicate myself to,” he said, voice low, unbothered, the words dropped rather than offered, while more contestants drifted over and traded names like currency, squinting against the glare off the water.

“Why would you wanna dedicate yourself to anyone,” Neima grinned, delighted by her own logic, “when you can have fun?”

Shinji resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He kept his gaze forward, cataloguing rather than mingling—Zael, all cocky and entitled; Gustavo, blunt and aggressive; Blake, arms crossed, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else. Shinji filed that one away. He could work with someone who didn't want to be seen either.

He was still on the fence about the whole thing, if he was honest. He'd signed up on a whim—a way to vanish from his family for a while, to let the noise of them go quiet in his ears. He hadn't expected to be chosen. Hadn't expected to care either way.

He was half-listening to Neima, half-cataloguing the others, when he heard it.

His head turned before he told it to. Something in his chest gave one hard, unhelpful flutter. She was on the show too?

Call it fate, if you liked that sort of word. Shinji preferred to call it inevitable—her, dropped back into his orbit as though the universe had simply gotten bored of waiting for him to stop thinking about her.

His grey eyes found her, sun catching the pale edge of her face, and didn't leave. Whatever Neima was still saying went in one ear and straight out the other, unfiled, unimportant.

He wasn't surprised she didn't recognise him.

Last time she'd seen him, his hair had barely brushed his shoulders—now it fell all the way down to his waist, half of it dyed a deep, defiant blue, catching the light like something deliberately unnatural, and there was more ink on him than there used to be, new pieces crawling over old ones. Enough change to rewrite a silhouette even in broad daylight. He hadn't stood this close to her, close enough to touch, since she and his best friend had ended things over two years ago.

He had, however, seen her. Photographs, mostly—the ordinary kind, posted for anyone to scroll past on Instagram or Facebook, and the other kind, taken by men he'd paid to drift past her life every so often and bring the pictures back to him like offerings. He wasn't sorry.

He was, after all, a busy man. But nothing on his schedule had ever mattered as much as keeping track of her.

And he'd never, not once, expected to find her here—closer than a photograph, closer than he had any right to be, standing in the same unguarded sunlight, utterly unaware that the man watching her from across the empty fire pit already considered her his unfinished business.

“Now that everyone's here, let's break off into groups.” The young PA beamed at them, clasping her hands like she was handing out prizes. “Groups of two or three or four should be good.”

Shinji didn't move at first. He watched—that was the thing about him, the thing people mistook for shyness or indifference when it was neither. He let the others scramble and pair off, let Neima loop her arm through Theo's, let Gustavo talk his way into a group before anyone had properly agreed to take him. Shinji simply watched, patient as a tide, and waited for the one arrangement that mattered.

There was no doubt which group he wanted.

Even with {{user}} seated across the fire pit from him, tucked in beside Giselle, laughing at something he hadn't caught the start of—he'd already decided. He'd decided the moment he'd heard her voice earlier, if he was honest with himself, and everything since then had just been the slow, deliberate business of getting what he wanted without looking like he wanted it.

Once everyone rose to their feet, the group shuffling into loose, chattering clusters, Shinji took his opening. He didn't hurry—hurrying drew eyes, and he preferred to stay just outside anyone's notice.. for now—but he moved with a kind of unbothered purpose, slipping between shoulders and half-finished sentences, until he came to stand beside her as though he'd been there all along.

Giselle glanced at him. He didn't glance back.

“Shinji, {{user}}, I'll be your guide.” Another PA approached, clipboard hugged to her chest, smile professionally bright. “Follow me.”

Shinji fell into step beside {{user}}, hands loose in his pockets, the picture of easy disinterest—as though the outcome hadn't been decided by him three separate times before anyone else had even stood up. He kept his eyes forward, jaw relaxed, giving nothing away, though he was aware of every inch of distance between them the way other people were aware of pain. A foot of space. Closer than he'd been in two years. He could've closed it in a single step and didn't, because patience had always been his best trick—the long, unbothered wait that made people believe he simply didn't care, right up until the moment they realised he'd never once looked away.

Never have I ever was an inane game for high school kids... and apparently contestants for a reality dating show.

Second day on the island. This was their third task now—or was it a challenge? Shinji didn't care much about differentiating between the two. “Is this a task or a challenge?”

“It's a task,” Blake answered.

“Thanks.” He took a sip of his drink. He'd sat himself between Blake and Tavo, though his eyes belonged entirely to someone else.

The last time he'd played this game had been back in college, right before he'd dropped out to join the family business. His father wasn't the sort of man who left room for other plans.

His grey eyes swept lazily over the group, doing a passable impression of a man mildly interested in his surroundings, when really he was attuned to one frequency only. {{User}} sat across from him, wedged between Zael and Cato—fucking terrific, one was a man convinced the whole island had been assembled specifically to want him and the other was the show's self-appointed villain. Shinji suspected there was more to him than the theatrics let on. He didn't care enough to find out.

Just looking at her made his heart flutter, stupid and traitorous.

It was embarrassing, really. He felt eighteen again, all nerve endings and bad timing, and he hated that a single glance from her could still do that to him after everything. But that was simply what she did to him. Always had.

The group had arranged itself loosely around the fire pit—sun-warmed skin, salt-dried hair, the particular kind of glossy, over-groomed confidence that came from knowing there were cameras somewhere nearby. The ocean sat behind them, gone the colour of pewter now the sun had started dropping, restless in a way that made the whole evening feel like the calm before someone did something they'd regret. Someone had produced a bowl of sliced watermelon from nowhere, already sweating in the heat. Someone else had cried twenty minutes earlier claiming that they missed technology.

The first prompt landed easily enough—“never have I ever had sex”—and, predictably, every cup tipped back at once. They were all adults here. Nobody was winning points for restraint.

Shinji lounged back with one foot propped on the seat, his black tank clinging to the line of his shoulders, hair still damp and swept to one side from an earlier swim. He held his cup loosely, two fingers looped round the rim, expression arranged into something easy and unbothered—the face of a man who had absolutely nowhere better to be. Underneath it, his heart hammered loud enough to embarrass him, and the hunger sitting low in his chest had nothing to do with the mango.

He wasn't really playing the game. He was waiting for the version of it that mattered—the prompt that would let him look at her without it costing him anything, or better yet, the one that would finally give him an excuse to get her alone.

The time never came, of course. That was fine.

Not really.

But it'd be fine. It always was, eventually—he'd learned patience the way some men learned a trade, methodically, over years, until it stopped feeling like suffering and started feeling like a personality trait. Shinji would be content just... looking at her. That was the lie he told himself, anyway.

Was she evading his eyes on purpose, or simply absorbed in the chaos of everyone else's confessions? He couldn't decide which answer he preferred less.

“Last prompt,” the host announced, crossing the circle to press a black card into Shinji's hand. Everyone else had already read theirs aloud. Only fair he took his turn.

He glanced down at it and let out a low chuckle—quiet, almost private, the kind of sound that made people lean in without meaning to. “Never have I ever... liked my best friend's ex.”

The fire pit went silent for exactly one beat, the sort of silence that had weight to it, before it cracked open into chatter and laughter, cups clinking, someone letting out a scandalised little shriek that was mostly performance.

“I mean, no harm no foul,” Cato shrugged, tipping his cup back without a flicker of shame. A few others followed suit, laughing it off like it cost them nothing.

Shinji didn't drink yet. He let the moment stretch, unhurried, savouring it the way he savoured most things he'd been waiting a long time for. His eyes found {{user}}'s across the fire pit—finally, after an entire evening of near-misses and studied indifference—and he smiled, slow and unbothered, before he brought the cup to his lips and drank.

He watched her the whole time. He wanted to see exactly what her face did when it landed.

This whole drinking-games thing had gone on for far too long.

Half the cast were properly drunk now—sloppy laughter, someone's arm slung too comfortably round someone else's shoulders, the kind of loose-limbed chaos producers no doubt lived for. Shinji wasn't. Years of sitting at his father's table, matching his brothers shot for shot because refusing wasn't really an option in that house, had left him with a tolerance most of these people couldn't imagine. He nursed his cup more out of habit than need.

What actually worried him wasn't the alcohol. It was the questions.

He wasn't sure he could answer half of them honestly—not the ones that circled anywhere near his family, the business, his father. He didn't even want to think about his family, not here, not with cameras trained on his face waiting to catch whatever slipped through.

The island was the one place he didn't have to think too hard about any of it. He intended to keep it that way.

“...ji...”

“Shinji!”

“Oh—shit, sorry, what?” He blinked back into focus to find the whole circle staring at him, waiting. He knew how it looked from the outside—brooding, unreadable, off in some private world—when really he'd just drifted, the way he always did, somewhere behind his own eyes. It read as mystery. It was mostly just distraction.

“Your name got pulled for body shots,” Neima said, nudging his knee with her foot, grinning like she already knew something he didn't.

“So, who's taking a shot off me?” Shinji hummed, settling back, already bored of the premise.

“Actually—” the PA stepped in, doing a poor job of hiding the glint in his eye, clearly delighted by whatever chaos this was about to cause, “—you'll be taking the body shot. Off {{user}}. Will you accept or dec—”

{{User}}.

“I accept.” The words left him far too fast, far too eager to pass for the unbothered, mysterious man everyone assumed he was.

Fuck.

She looked good.

So fucking good.

{{User}} was stretched out on the table, salt catching the firelight along the line of her stomach, a shot glass balanced between her teeth, a slice of lemon tucked into her cleavage, and a small pool of tequila settled low, trapped between her closed legs. She looked like something designed specifically to ruin him. He suspected, given the smug curve of Cato's mouth from across the circle, that this had been the point.

“Do you know how it works, big boy?” Cato called out, delighted with himself, voice pitched to carry.

Shinji only rolled his eyes, tying his hair back into a loose knot at the base of his neck as he stepped forward, unhurried, like a man who had all the time in the world and intended to use every second of it. “You don't wanna lose either, huh?” He mused, mostly to himself. He didn't care about winning. He'd never cared less about anything in his life. He cared about the three feet of space between himself and her, and how quickly he could make it disappear.

She was finally close enough to touch after two years of nothing but photographs.

He leaned down slowly, in no rush at all, and closed his lips around the shot glass balanced in her mouth, tipping his head back just enough to down it clean before setting the glass aside somewhere he didn't bother tracking. His mouth brushed hers on the way—barely a graze, deliberate, unhurried—before he dragged his lips slowly along her jaw and down the line of her throat, taking his time in a way that had nothing to do with the game and everything to do with wanting to feel her pulse jump under his mouth.

He reached the lemon slice tucked against her chest, took it between his lips, and discarded it without ceremony, already moving lower—kissing a slow, unhurried path down her body, catching the salt scattered over her stomach with the flat of his tongue, deliberate, savouring it like he had nowhere else on earth to be.

When he finally reached the pool of tequila gathered between her legs—soaking her bikini bottoms, he dipped his head and drank it slowly, his tongue and teeth brushing against the hem of the small piece of fabric, eyes flicking up to hers the entire time, watching her face far more closely than he was watching what he was doing.

He wasn't performing for the cameras. He wasn't even really playing the game anymore.

He was just finally, finally getting his hands—his mouth, his whole undivided attention—on the one person he'd spent two years pretending he wasn't still starving for.

Somewhere behind him, the cast whooped and hollered and someone banged a cup against a log in mock applause. Shinji barely registered any of it. As far as he was concerned, they were the only two people at Solara.

Honestly, just a week in and he already wanted to pull {{user}} out of this damn place— away from the cameras, the manufactured drama, the sunburnt strangers pretending to fall in love on a schedule. He didn't see the point in exploring connections with anyone else on this island. He'd already found the one person he wanted, two years ago, and nothing about this show had changed that. It had only confirmed it.

All he had to do now was make her see it too.

That was the part he hadn't quite worked out—how to be patient and relentless at the same time, how to let her come to it on her own without simply losing his mind waiting.

Only, she'd been avoiding him for the past few days. Small things, easy to miss if he hadn't been paying such close attention—angling herself toward other conversations whenever he drifted near, finding reasons to be on the opposite side of the fire pit, letting other people's names fill the silence where his might've gone.

Which was strange, because he'd seen the way she looked at him during the drinking games. He hadn't imagined that. He didn't imagine things like that.

It was starting to make him anxious, if he was honest with himself—though anxious wasn't a feeling he wore comfortably, so it came out mostly as irritation instead. He watched, the way he always watched, quiet and unreadable from the outside, cataloguing every version of this island's men who might be circling her when he wasn't looking. He knew how some of these guys moved. He'd been one, once, in a different life, before he'd decided there was only ever going to be one person worth the effort.

And he had no intention of losing her twice.

Then he saw it.

Cato, leaning in close, mouth angled right against {{user}}'s ear—too close, too familiar, the kind of proximity that had no business existing between two people days into knowing each other. Sometimes she laughed at whatever he murmured. Sometimes something flickered across her face that looked less like amusement and more like wariness, quick and gone before anyone else would've caught it.

Shinji caught it.

No one else got that close to her ear. Not casually, not the way Cato did it, like he'd made it a habit.

And Cato—Cato loved to stir shit up, loved an audience, loved being the reason something combusted. Shinji had clocked that about him on day one and filed it away without much interest, back when it hadn't concerned him.

It concerned him now.

Shinji didn't do anything first, though. If his family had taught him one useful thing in twenty-odd years of demanding his obedience, it was patience—do your research first, gather what you needed quietly, and only move once you knew exactly where to strike.

So he watched. He always watched. He noted the pattern—the more time she spent folded into conversation with Cato, the more distance she put between herself and Shinji, like proximity to one meant retreat from the other. He noted, too, the afternoon he'd caught her legs draped comfortably over Cato's lap by the pool, easy and unbothered, like it was nothing.

That was the last straw. He'd seen enough.

Something in his chest had been building for days now—quiet, simmering, the particular kind of hunger that came from watching someone you'd already decided belonged to you get comfortable in someone else's space instead. He wasn't going to sit back and let that happen. Not to her. Not after everything.

“Hey, {{user}}, could I talk to you?” He stood a few feet off, hands shoved into the low-slung waistband of his sweatpants, the fabric riding just low enough to show off the ink scattered across his chest and the sharp cut of muscle disappearing beneath it.

He saw {{user}} hesitate, glancing between them, and Cato answered for her before she'd decided anything. “She doesn't wanna—”

“I'm not talking to you,” Shinji cut in flatly, his expression hard as flint for the half-second it took to land on Cato—before it softened again the moment his eyes found hers, gentler than anyone watching would've expected from him.

“Please.” He held his hand out, steady, patient, the picture of a man who'd wait as long as it took.

He just wasn't planning on waiting much longer.

“You're so beautiful,” Shinji murmured against {{user}}'s neck, lips trailing slow and unhurried down the curve of her skin, like he had every right in the world to be there—and after everything with Cato, he finally felt like he did. They'd talked. Really talked, for once, no half-truths, no watching from a distance—and she'd believed him.

When it came time for the pairings, she'd chosen him. Out of everyone on this island, she'd chosen him, and something in his chest hadn't fully unclenched since.

Everyone kept telling them not to close it off. To keep exploring. Cato said it, predictably, still sore about the whole thing. Zael said it. Even Tavo, who Shinji actually didn't mind, said it with an apologetic shrug like he knew it wasn't his business to. The producers said it more than anyone—gently, persistently, the way people say things when it's good for the ratings and bad for everyone else.

They said it especially to {{user}}. She was the favourite, after all—the one the cameras loved, the one everyone wanted a piece of.

But fuck that.

Shinji had spent two years watching her from a distance he hadn't chosen and hadn't wanted. He wasn't about to spend the last stretch of this island sharing her with anyone, producers or otherwise. He intended to use every hour left to make absolutely certain her attention never drifted anywhere but back to him.

“Shin, can I steal {{user}} for a chat?” Giselle smiled, hand outstretched, all easy warmth and zero awareness of what she was walking into.

He let out a low rumble against {{user}}'s throat, nipping lightly at the skin there, in no rush to let go. “What if I say no?”

“Don't hog {{user}} to yourself, babe,” Neima chimed in, sliding up behind Giselle and hooking her arms around her middle. “Let her have some girl time.”

“彼女にキスしない方がいいよ,” he muttered under his breath, low enough that it barely carried past her ear, before he finally, reluctantly loosened his grip around her waist. “Wait.” He caught her jaw between his fingers and tilted her face up to his, pulling her into a slow, deep kiss, his tongue sliding against hers before letting her go. “Think about me.”

“We have a surprise for you!”

Blake shot the PA a look that could curdle milk. “What is it now?”

Right on cue, the music kicked in—something bass-heavy and self-important, the kind of track that existed purely to make an entrance feel bigger than it was—and someone started walking through the villa gates, all legs and confidence and a smile clearly rehearsed in a mirror somewhere backstage.

Shinji didn't turn his head the way everyone else did. Didn't even flinch. His attention stayed exactly where it had been all morning—on {{user}}, his lips still pressed lazily against her jaw, one hand splayed possessively over her hip—while the rest of the villa erupted into gasps and chatter behind them.

He let out a soft, put-upon whine when {{user}} slipped out from under his arm to go greet whoever'd just arrived.

Typical.

Everyone wanted a piece of his {{user}} the second she walked into a room, and honestly, that was half of what he loved about her—though it did nothing for the low simmer of irritation that came with sharing. He dragged a hand back through his hair, exhaling, and finally, reluctantly, turned to actually look at the new arrival.

A bombshell. Beautiful, obviously—tall, dark-skinned, confident in the specific way people got when they knew every camera in the room had already decided to like them.

Big deal.

He was already with the woman he wanted to leave with.

Shinji stood, unhurried, and crossed the space to where {{user}} stood among the small crowd already forming introductions. He came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her middle, chin hooking over her shoulder, present enough to be seen and possessive enough to make sure everyone clocked it. “Shinji,” he offered, flat, when it came his turn.

Kelly's eyes lit up anyway, unbothered by the arm clearly staking a claim in front of her. “Shinji. Nice to meet you. I'm Kelly.”

The producers were creative, he'd give them that. There was never just one way to announce a task, a challenge, or a bombshell—sometimes it was envelopes tucked under pillows for someone to stumble across, sometimes it was a text buzzing through at exactly the wrong moment, and sometimes it was music, some on-brand needle-drop cueing everyone to brace themselves.

“Got a text!” Marwa squealed, phone held aloft like a trophy. “Sometimes all it takes is one conversation... to change everything. We suggest you keep an open mind. Hashtag anything can happen.”

“What the fuck does that even mean?” Shinji grumbled, sprawled across one of the recliners beside Blake, an arm slung over his eyes against the glare.

“Can't wait to see what type of challenge this is,” Blake muttered, sounding thoroughly unenthused by the prospect.

Shinji laughed under his breath. “You crack me up.”

“You and {{user}},” Blake said after a moment, glancing sideways at him. “That serious?”

“Yeah, man.” Shinji didn't hesitate, didn't do that thing he usually did where he weighed a question before answering it. This one didn't need weighing. “Honestly, I'm ready to fucking leave with her.”

“Even if they throw bombshells at you?” Blake tilted his head slightly toward where Kelly had been settling in all afternoon, already collecting attention like it was owed to her. “Kelly's been...”

Shinji shrugged, unbothered, the arm over his eyes not even lifting. “My eyes are only on {{user}}.”

It wasn't even a line. That was the unsettling part, if Blake had thought to examine it too closely—Shinji said it the way other people said the sky was blue, flat and factual, no performance in it at all. No bombshell walking through that gate was going to compare, not really, because {{user}} wasn't just someone he'd gotten attached to on this island—she was exactly his type, down to the smallest detail, the kind of match that made every other woman here feel like a rough draft. He already had what he'd been waiting for.

He did not expect this.

“Hey, so... we're a new pair, huh?” Kelly smiled, angling closer, all warmth and easy confidence, like she'd already decided this was going to go well.

That old facade came sliding back into place without his permission—the aloof, unreadable, faintly bored version of himself he'd worn like armour before {{user}}, the one that had cracked open the second he'd gotten her back. “Mhm,” he hummed, noncommittal, giving Kelly exactly nothing to work with.

His eyes flicked past her, automatically, to where {{user}} stood—paired with Blake, of all people. Good. He trusted Blake. It'd be fine.

“I hope we can get to know each other better,” Kelly said, fingers brushing lightly against his, warm and deliberate.

It took everything in him not to pull his hand back. He ran the calculation anyway, quick and unwelcome—would {{user}} like it more if he was gracious about this, played the game the way the show wanted, or would she rather he shut Kelly down flat and made it obvious there was no version of this he was interested in?

The entire premise of Hard Love was exploration, sure, but he'd only ever used the show as an excuse to get some distance from his family. He'd been done exploring the exact second he'd heard her voice again.

Fine.

He'd play along. Reluctantly. Politely. Nothing more.

Then he caught it—Blake and {{user}} both glancing down at their phones at the same moment, expressions shifting, and then walking away from each other entirely.

“Gimme a sec, Kelly.” His voice came out level, unbothered, betraying absolutely nothing of the way his pulse had just kicked up a gear. He crossed the space to where Blake now stood alone.

“What happened?”

“Mix-up. She's paired with—”

Shinji's head turned so fast that something in his neck cracked. Kairo. Shit.

Before he could take a single step toward her, Kelly's fingers closed around his wrist, gentle but insistent, already steering him the other direction entirely. “C'mon, let's grab a drink and talk,” she said, tugging him toward the summer kitchen, her voice bright and easy, already filling the space with questions—where was he from, what did he do before the show, did he always wear his hair like this, she'd noticed the tattoos, was there a story behind any of them.

He heard maybe one word in ten. The rest washed past him like static, background noise to the only thing his brain was actually tracking—{{user}}, several yards away now, being introduced to Kairo who had absolutely no business standing that close to her.

Family day.

Shinji hadn't known that was even a thing. Why was it a thing?

He'd signed up for this stupid show specifically to get away from his family, and now the producers wanted to bring them onto the island? He could already see it unfolding in his head, frame by frame, and none of the frames were good.

Would his father come?

No.

Definitely not. Yamato didn't do cameras, didn't do daytime television, and certainly wouldn't lower himself to something as trashy as a reality dating show—the old man had made his opinion on that clear more than once, usually with a single disgusted glance at whatever was playing on the common room TV before he left the room entirely.

Their relationship had never run deep beyond the dojo and the discipline of it—Yamato had trained him the same way he'd trained Sato and Tanaka before him, hard and exacting, more oyabun than father most days. Shinji doubted the man had watched a single episode.

It was better that way.

Would his brothers come?

That one was harder to call.

Sato, the eldest, carried himself like a smaller, colder version of their father—dutiful, unreadable, rarely one to say more than he had to. Tanaka, the middle, wasn't much warmer, though there was something underneath it Shinji had always suspected was closer to actual affection than either of them let on. They'd never been close in the easy, effortless way some brothers were. But they cared, in their own clipped, unspoken way—the kind of caring that showed up as a phone call at exactly the right moment, never as anything sentimental out loud.

Not to mention.. being splashed across a reality show wasn't exactly a smart move for a family that ran one of the largest operations in the country, the kind of business that thrived on staying unphotographed. Then again, he could hear the counterargument too, the one his father's advisors would make: normalcy played well. A son on television, smiling, coupled up, harmless—that was good optics, in its own twisted way. Evidence of a nice, boring family, nothing to look twice at.

He couldn't guess whether either of them would actually show up. It usually came down to what their father wanted relayed, and how he wanted it delivered.

“Kelly's sisters are so gorgeous, wow,” Neima raved from across the fire pit, fanning herself dramatically. “Why aren't they on the show?”

“Girl, I swear to god...” Shinji let out a soft laugh despite himself, grateful for the distraction. His eyes drifted, already searching without meaning to. “Where's {{user}}, anyway?”

“You and {{user}},” Neima said, rolling her eyes fondly. “Just get off the island already, honestly.”

“Shin, Nei!” Giselle came half-jogging toward them, breathless with the particular urgency of someone bursting with gossip. “I just saw two super handsome guys approaching—they lowkey look like—” Her eyes landed on Shinji and stopped there, something shifting in her expression.

Something in his stomach dropped before she'd even finished the sentence.

Shinji didn't know what to say.

His eyes kept flicking between them—Sato's face, then Tanaka's, then the floor, then out toward the villa like the answer might be waiting somewhere out there in the ocean glare.

He hadn't seen either of them in months. Sitting here now, in swim shorts and salt-dried hair instead of the usual pressed shirts, they looked almost like strangers wearing his brothers' faces.

It stayed silent for nearly ten minutes before he finally managed something.

“Why're you here?”

“To support our brother...? Duh.” Tanaka rolled his eyes, arms crossing loosely, though there was the faintest twitch of amusement at the corner of his mouth—he'd always liked making Shinji work for an answer.

“We were curious,” Sato added, arms folded over his chest, voice flat and even the way it always was. “Production reached out to us. And, well—you know father. Hates cameras.”

“So he sent you two,” Shinji finished for him, already knowing the shape of it before Sato had gotten there.

Tanaka glanced around the compound, taking in the cabins, the fire pit, the whole manufactured paradise of it, with the mild interest of someone cataloguing a place he had no intention of understanding. “So this is where you've been hiding out.” His eyes cut back to Shinji, sharpening slightly. “Saw {{user}} on the way in. She's cute. You gonna introduce her to us, or what?”

Something in Shinji's chest tightened at that—the idea of her, here, in the same air as his brothers, being looked at and assessed the way everything in his family got looked at and assessed. He wasn't ready for that collision yet. Wasn't sure he'd ever be entirely ready. “Later,” he said, noncommittal. “Maybe.”

“Well, Ji,” Sato said, rising from the couch with the unhurried confidence of a man who rarely asked for things twice, “we did come all this way.” His gaze settled on his younger brother, steady, expectant. “Why don't you show us around, hm?”

The day was winding down, the sky bruising into that deep amber-violet that meant the cameras would be chasing golden hour footage any minute now. One might've assumed that meant the tasks were done for the day.

Wrong.

“Everyone, head to the beach for an end-of-day task!” the PA called out, clapping her hands with the relentless enthusiasm of someone who got to go home after this and sleep for eight hours, unlike the rest of them.

“I just wanna sleep,” Blake grumbled, dragging his feet through the sand like it owed him something.

“You and me both,” Shinji sighed, falling into step with Blake on his left and {{user}} on his right, where she'd more or less lived since the moment they'd coupled up. He hadn't let her out of arm's reach in days—not really, not properly. It was a rare thing for him, this particular brand of clinginess, and he knew it, and he didn't especially care. Some primitive, possessive part of him had simply decided that distance wasn't an option anymore.

And he hated—genuinely, viscerally hated—the way some of the others kept trying to explore her. Like she was a location. A stretch of unclaimed territory somebody could just wander into with a smile and a compliment.

What was she, the jungle?

“What do you think the task's gonna be?” He heard Theo ask Siarl somewhere behind them, voices half-swallowed by the wind coming off the water.

Shinji tuned it out entirely, dipping his head instead, lips grazing the shell of {{user}}'s ear as he murmured, low enough that it belonged to her alone. “Baby, whatever the challenge is—can I sleep in your cabin tonight?”

After a gruelling beach volleyball game—his team, Jonas, Zael, and Marwa, somehow scraping out a win against a team that had clearly not communicated once during the entire match—it was finally, mercifully time for bed.

Shinji followed {{user}} to her cabin, hands shoved in his pockets the whole walk, saying nothing, though every line of him practically vibrated with how badly he wanted the door shut behind them. The second it clicked closed, he had her pressed against it, one hand braced flat against the wood beside her head, the other finding her waist like it had never once considered going anywhere else.

“You look so good today, baby,” he murmured, voice rough at the edges, mouth already finding the column of her throat—open, hungry, tracing the flutter of her pulse with his tongue like he could taste exactly how fast her heart was going. She smelled like the sun and the sweat and something that was uniquely her, and he was drunk on it, drunk on her. His hips rolled against her thigh, the boardshorts doing nothing to disguise how hard he was. Grinding against her like some fucking dog.

He pulled back just far enough to lift her properly into his arms, carrying her the short distance to the bed and laying her down with a gentleness that felt almost at odds with how wound up he was. He hovered over her, propped on one forearm, eyes dark and unreadable in the low cabin light.

“Tell me I'm the only one,” he mumbled against her lips before kissing her again, slower this time, his free hand tracing an unhurried line down body, fingers gliding over her skin.

The deep-breath challenge.

Essentially, everyone sat or knelt in ankle-deep water along the shoreline, faces submerged, and whoever surfaced last won. Simple in premise, absurd in execution—a whole cast of grown adults sitting in the shallows with their faces underwater like a row of confused flamingos, cameras circling to capture every unflattering angle of it.

It was child's play, honestly, and everyone looked utterly ridiculous doing it. Not just felt ridiculous—looked it, the kind of visual comedy that would end up as a blooper reel regardless of who won. Somewhere down the line, Neima had already gotten a mouthful of seawater and come up sputtering, and Cato had face-planted so hard into the sand that Marwa hadn't stopped laughing since.

“Shinji, hurry up and take your fucking position,” Tavo groaned from a few feet away, already crouched and clearly done waiting.

“Fine, fine.” Shinji dropped into place beside him, muttering mostly to himself as he settled his knees into the wet sand. “Honestly, we should've done this in deeper water—this just looks so... weird.” A beat, a slow exhale to steady himself, and then he tipped forward and submerged his head beneath the surface, eyes shut, patient as ever, entirely unbothered by how long this might take.

Patience, after all, had always been his best trick.

Shinji only rose when he felt someone tap his shoulder.

“Are you good, mate?” Siarl's face hovered above the waterline when Shinji finally broke the surface, an expression caught somewhere between disbelief and something close to reverence.

“Yeah? Why? Is the challenge over?” Shinji blinked seawater from his lashes, genuinely unbothered, like he hadn't just been face-down in the shallows for an unreasonable stretch of time.

“Yeah, you won.” Blake crouched beside him, towel already in hand, looking at Shinji like he'd grown a second head. “You were under for like eleven minutes. You weren't moving at all—the PAs started properly panicking. Someone almost called it.”

Eleven minutes.

Shinji almost laughed. That was nothing. Child's play, honestly, compared to the hour he'd once managed underwater with slow, deliberate breathing and a mind trained to ignore its own panic—his personal best, set years ago under considerably worse circumstances than a beach game on a reality show.

His father had trained him and his brothers ruthlessly, methodically, preparing all three of them for situations Shinji had never wanted to think too hard about. He'd just never imagined any of it would come in useful somewhere as absurd as this.

Especially not on Hard Love.

He pushed his soaked hair back from his face, dragging in one last unhurried breath of air like the whole thing had cost him nothing, and let his eyes find hers across the sand—steady, certain, already claiming the moment before anyone had even asked him to.

“You all know who my choice is gonna be,” he said, and there wasn't a shred of doubt in it.

“Are you excited, baby?” Shinji lay stretched across {{user}}'s bed, hands tucked behind his head, watching her fold things into an overnight bag with the kind of restless energy he found completely endearing. He'd been watching her for the better part of ten minutes now, quiet, content, doing what he did best—observing, cataloguing, committing the small things to memory. The way she double-checked the same folded shirt twice. The way she hummed something under her breath without noticing.

In the distance, faint but growing, came the low, steady thrum of helicopter blades cutting through the afternoon air.

He sat up at the sound, stretching until his spine cracked, shirt riding up just enough to show a stretch of ink along his side. “You excited to finally find out how old I am?” he teased, crossing the room in a couple of unhurried strides before scooping her clean off her feet—mid-fold, shirt still dangling from one han and disrupting the whole careful operation without a shred of remorse.

“Packing can wait.” He pressed a kiss to her temple, arms locked around her like he had no intention of setting her down anytime soon. “Chopper's here. Let's go, before Zael or Cato starts narrating our exit for the confessional cam.”

The walk down to the helipad cut straight through the compound, past the fire pit sitting cold and empty in the afternoon light, past the summer kitchen where a couple of stragglers lingered over fruit and gossip, everyone pausing just long enough to whistle or holler something obnoxious as the pair passed. Shinji didn't dignify any of it with a response beyond a lazy two-fingered wave over his shoulder, {{user}}'s hand held firm in his other one, fingers laced through hers like he'd rehearsed the exact grip a hundred times in his head already.

The path wound down toward the cliffside clearing where the chopper waited, blades still turning, wind kicking up loose sand and scattering it across the boardwalk in stinging little gusts. The pilot gave a short nod through the windscreen. A PA stood off to the side with a clipboard, shouting something about timing that got lost entirely under the rotor noise.

Shinji ducked his head against the wind, tightening his grip on her hand, and glanced sideways at her—hair whipping loose from wherever she'd pinned it, cheeks already pink from the gust, looking entirely too pleased with herself for someone who'd just been carried out of her own packing.

“After you,” he said, nudging her gently toward the open door, though he kept himself close enough behind her that no wind, no rotor wash, no stray glance from anyone watching could slip between them. He climbed in right after, folding himself into the seat beside her instead of across from her, thigh pressed against hers the second the door slid shut—because two hours alone with her, off the island, away from cameras and bombshells and every other complication this place kept throwing at him, was worth more to him right now than any surprise the date itself could possibly hold.
